I deleted Instagram from my phone last week. I've kept the account and can check it via a browser but the extra step has kept me off it for the most part. I found myself on Instagram for no apparent reason, infinitely scrolling absolute garbage and not actually looking at the stuff I am interested in. It's like when you check your watch and immediately have no idea what time it is. Just a completely mindless act for me that felt like it was sucking time from the life in front of me. The irony of writing about the perils of IG while typing on a forum for grown person baby dolls is not lost on me But I'd rather waste time here than on a Meta product.
I prefer using a web interface instead of an app, it gives me one more layer of insulation between me and the companies that own those social media platforms. (However, I still can't bring myself to delete the Instagram app from my phone.)
Remember endlessly flipping through cable, doing nothing but watching junk for a few seconds. Now instagram has found a way to recreate the act after cable cutting. That's what the explore feed is, the new cable.
Can’t blame people for “cutting the cord,” haha. I don’t know how long it’s been since I’ve opened IG. I have a lot of people I need to get back to, and I really should do that, but IG feels like an ad platform/doomscrolling app now. Not that I didn’t scroll for hours years back, but at least I was having fun looking at toys, not ads and suggested posts.
still lots of value for me in it. The constant migration to the flavor of the month is dismaying; connections get severed and info gets lost.
I'm so frustrated at Instagram, if you look up a hashtag now on my phone it shows me "Top Posts" or I can switch it to "Recent Top Posts". WHERE ARE REGULAR RECENT POSTS?!! I like seeing posts from regular people, not just popular ones…
Same thing happened to me. I can only see the "top" posts. Regular recent post came back for awhile then disappeared. Checked across multiple devices, but same result. My guess is that IG doesn't like it when you login from multiple devices and choose not to "trust" that login across all the devices. Bummer, as I really miss access to seeing all of the old #butanohana posts, especially to jog my memory for sequential releases
same for me for months, I very rarely post anything there anymore. #searching was my main reason for joining in the first place.
It's a real shame. I'm not sure what social media I should use for art/sofubi anymore. Facebook is stale, Twitter is full of assholes arguing, Instagram just promotes popular posts, and TikTok is full of 10 year olds. I feel like there's nowhere to go. At least SB still exists.
Yeah, that bugs me too, but I have found subscribing to hashtags does put new posts in your feed. I also wonder if the better search functionality is only available for business accounts these days.
This feels like the beginning of the end for Instagram. https://mastodon.social/@kjhealy/113765040222504912
https://mashable.com/article/quitting-instagram-meta-you-should-too Over the past week I've seen a few of the folks I follow leaving Instagram. Maybe it's notable that none of them are toy people. Meta is a shitty company but this software is still usable and useful for me. I'm staying for now.
Instagram is too established to be replaced unless a new platform really knocks it out of the park. Even then it would still be an uphill battle.
Instagram can be hacked easily using Perl, anything Facebook "Meta" is really easy to hack to show you anything the hacker wants to show you.
Can you be specific about what "hacked" means in this context? Are you talking about stealing usernames and passwords or something else?
While this does perturb me, since Meta and Instagram suck so goddamn hard now, but I wouldn’t mind it so much if emoji’s as comments weren’t the new spam call/text I see on my phone. I miss conversations about toys and artists, especially when it’s in DROVES on Instagram with the accessibility now.
When it comes to toys, I only use it for like lotteries or release info, or pictures of toys I'll never own. The conversation usually gets moved to DMs in the few group chats I have. I'd make the move to a new platform for a more personal use.
Sure would save a lot of money if I ditched IG... The deep conversations are in the DMs, same as it used to be on here. You don't need instagram for that. A Discord or Slack could potentially be the solution if faster back and forth is what is so attractive about IG. What I do love about IG is how it, ever so slightly, has shone a larger spotlight on the global community. It's nice, in that regard. But again, IG is no longer necessary for that.
