The fugliest toys you have seen while collecting.

I agree about the similarity in the body design.
On a separate note: I think that some newer toymakers might not realize that it's OK to have or just be curious about non-traditional sexuality. I mean, at this point, I don't know if they are compensating, projecting desires, or just being immature. All I know is "assorted plastic toy cocks".

I can't tell if it's an actual toy or something created just to poke fun at the barrage of sex-fubi toys we see these day. While I was trying to figure out if it's meant to be taken seriously or not I did see lots of other pictures and the foot stamp which finally surpasses the old nag "fuck the usa" stamp with it's incredibly appropriate "Wet Panties" stamp.

Keep watch for my "moist clam jam" foot stamp debuting in 2018. Actual toy sculpt tbd

I love this toy. I think the content is conducive to the object. It's a great idea. Not just another troll/cyclops/ape/ robot....
I'm over almost all of the dead zombie cadaver toys. shit sucks. Rather buy domestic resin figures and support good ideas.

I read about this thing today. The idea behind it is pretty interesting. They idea was to create a "primitive" toy by doing the entire process from start to finish by hand. Just clay and fingers, no tools allowed. It explains a lot about the end result I think.

That part is interesting, but there are still countless design choices that aren't necessarily related to that approach.

To further reinforce the "inspiration" behind this toy, didn't Shig say something like that in regards to sculpting his toys in an interview with Clutter magazine a few years back?

True. This does obviously look a lot like another toy. I love the concept of making a toy with just your hands and no tools at all but I personally wouldn't take my "natural" creation into vinyl or resin or any other medium.

I have no idea. I don't read clutter but I do remember something about Hirota digging up natural clay himself to sculpt a monster which I thought was pretty amazing.

I think this guy might have some actual talent. I mean, they need work, but...

...just look at all of his other sculpts in this picture. Interesting stuff, almost.

I wonder what the toy landscape will be like in a couple of years -- Will we still be seeing countless iterations of sculpts inspired by already existing MVH / NNN / HS toys? In most creative fields, there's bound to be some sort of influence, homage, whatever... I'm sure I've said something like this before but as a creative, I often wonder how these new producers could find any pride in showing off their derivative work. Like, 'hey, look at what I made, it looks a lot like that thing you're already familiar with and might want, surely you'll like this and want to buy it too, right?' It's so cheap and dirty and disingenuous. One thing that has always drawn me to collecting sofubi is the ORIGINALITY -- Isn't that what CREATING is about at its core?

Aside from the obvious reason of trying to make a quick buck, I'd honestly love to hear an explanation as to why so many new sculpts are so heavily influenced by some of the most hyped brands around.

    You answered your own question!

    Hype.

Nobody ever copied the best toy of all time, the "Pet Rock" although crack cocaine may be considered a derivative who knows for sure?

Well, yea, I hear you. Recognition + High Retail Price = Hype = Potential Sales. It's just kind of sad and lazy. How can you have respect for your own work if it so clearly copies someone else's? It's all befuddling af to me.

    Bugs, bugs, bugs, bugs........ BUGs!

Some of the trends we are seeing seem to lack respect of influence most of all. Kinda like the world only began a decade ago.

Whole lotta creatures and concepts out there yet $$$ seems to motivate "art" and "artists" most of all.

As I type this I have been watching a spider making a web in one of my windows. Wonder if it looked at other spiderwebs to check if it measured up?

    Spider is OK.

I think you might be thinking of Sato-san of Target Earth, unless Hirota has done it too. Most Japanese sculptors use paper clay, but Hirotas figures look like they are sculpted in wax (or something very wax like) or at least refined in wax. There is a lot of texture that has a somewhat melty feeling like it was done in heated wax.

I think one thing we take for granted is just frustration in not being able to get those toys. If you try for years and years, but the lottos keep going to the same people or the figures are intentionally limited, someone like Nag seems to publically sell only about 10 figures a year anymore. Someone like PLT seems to be doing pretty much micro runs. After all his production costs, I think it's safe to say he's not making bags of money on a figure like that.

When it comes to derivative sculpts, I'm more concerned about artistic integrity than I am about the copycats making tons of dough. Just saying.

Money is ugly, most if not all toys have the potential of bringing happiness to someone.

Sculpts are one thing, hype is another.

I love Tan's work, but fuck me it's so painfully apparent it's a business first and a passion second.

Your quote got butchered up, however......[IMG]

This is what a lot of folks use. Not cheap but very nice to work with.

Natural clay is hit and miss due to it drying out and getting it sourcewise.

Wax is a bit tricky to work with but saves much time and money if one wishes to produce soft vinyl.

Wonder if anyone sculpts with poop? Besides that guy down in Georgia! :)

    Just to keep on topic.......

Fuck you to the lazy bastard in my neighborhood that never picks up his dog turds.

I collected them for you today again and left them on your porch with the little thank you note- enjoy!
