Hehe wtf mate indeed. Totally random and crazy to someone who doesn't understand where these are coming from; someone like me . Is that a swastika on the helmet n' horns creature? They have to be villains of some sort. Or ignorant little basterd toys lol.
Totally! It one of those things where you have an immediate gut reaction. Which I guess is the point. I noticed the swastika is going the wrong direction so there is that...and the "FANCY Toys" title seems pretty tongue in cheek. And I won’t even get into what the professor looking dudes eyes look like…lol.
I was going to say they were using swastika in the original Buddhist peace symbol sense till I saw the rest of the figure's get up. The way the toy is "cutesy" shows pretty clearly that there's no sense of the weight of the symbol (as used in association with Nazism) in the Western world. (And I kind of doubt this is one of those "ironic" Nazi toys that you see from some Western artists.) Anyway, it seeems there's a perverse fascination in Japan (or at least with some Japanese designers) with the Third Reich. I haven't a clue why. Maybe one of the board's long-term expats in Japan could fill us in.
I remember this being discussed here before as well, dont remember why though. From the looks of things I'm assuming they all have some sort of reference to war. The Nazi guy, and the one that looks like a mushroom cloud with arms etc .. I just don't get the fancy toy title. For the price I hope these guys are full sized, 30,000 yen yikes ! As for me, I'm passing, as interesting as they are, the price is what kills them.
They are a play on Chibira-Kun. I think the swastika etc. is more with the intent of making a joke on the original cute figures. Just my take on it.
They are full sized from what I heard...but yeah, dropping 30K JPY is a bit tough. If they sold them separately, it might not be as bad but I'm sure they'd be left with a lot of one or 2 of them. I like the boy and the dino best.
Yeah it does seem playful, which is kind of weird to say in reference to a Nazi themed toy. I guess they just don't get the Western taboo of the symbol (it's even illegal to use it in Germany on such a figure).
Its funny you say that Andy, My grandmother if from Germany and was there during Nazi times. If she ever saw this in my apartment she would slap the shit out of me.
This sounds so damn conservative, sorry had to spit that out ... I personally think this is a great toy set, they have an intense bizarre child-like confusion to them.
I don't want a toy with an image of Dick Cheney on its chest, the same thing goes for a swastica. Its not a matter of being "conservative" I just don't need a toy with a swastica or Dick Cheney painted on it because those images aren't fun. At least the symbol's rotating to the right.
I think it would help if they had a comparison shot to one of there existing toys for size reference, as someone earlier in the post mentioned they are fullsize(?). In any case that would justify the price, hehe at least you can't deny 'em there namesake; fancy toys, with a price tag like that, no $h!t.
