View this post on Instagram I know its technically like a double post but... I NEVER GET TO POST IN THIS THREAD!!! STOKED.
One of my best mail days ever. Vintage 1968 Abura-Sumashi by Nitto. Absolutely love his 6.5" chunky size.
looks like it came out of a time machine- very keen! now the quest to find all the others? really love the expression!!
Holey mackerel on a hot plate! That's one heck of a mail day, Ralph! That's 6.5" of top shelf presence right there! I can only imagine.
That's a great looking toy Ralph. Very quirky. I don't know much about it but I take it you've been after him for awhile?
^ Yes! Much like Ogon Bat, there weren't a lot of vintage figures in the form of vinyl made of Abura-Sumashi, at least not that I know of and not counting the later Bandai & Tomy stuff. I love his Yokai lore and of course his more modern interpretation/design by Shigeru Mizuki reflected in this Nitto figure, just blows me away. And you're right, he is really quirky with his straw coat, rocky sort of head and facial expression. His uniqueness, being a character designer, always really attracted me. I would like to create a cane to put in his hand but there's only an indentation on his hand and not a hole. This leads me to believe he didn't come with a cane but if anyone knows differently I'd love to know about it.
no cane (at least not from the advertisement photo) (ad from the moogs flickr stream) super amazing score on that toy- the nitto yokai are such great toys.
thank the moog for finding it! its great to look at and fantasize, even if i found one to buy, i dont know if id have the money to pull the trigger
Thanks Moog as well! ; ) Btw...getting lost in your flickr photos...great sofubi pics AND fantastic graphic novel/book collection! Among other things, nice to see another Jordi Bernet fan! I think I'v seen the Nitto model kits come up but never really knew what they looked like. Invaluable reference.
Wow Ralph! That's awesome! For a couple years I tried to score one and just gave up!! Very very nice.
Echoing the sentiments of everyone else, that's an amazing pick up, Ralph. Congrats! Abura Sumashi's my favorite yokai of all time. He's just so weird and creepy! And his role in Daiei's Spook Warfare really stuck with me. Incidentally, if you (or anyone else) happens to score the Karakasa in this line, PM me. I CAD modeled a super-simple display stand that hooks around his heel and geta (sandal). Always hated how that figure could never stand up on his own...
Thanks, and you are welcome mate . . . that's why i posted them on SB . . . so everyone can enjoy them and use for reference! . . . and yeah, Jordi Bernet - probably my favourite Spanish comics artist next to Sergio Aragonés and Carlos Ezquerra Here's box front pics i found of two of the Nitto kits and a nice size comparison shot by a lucky Japanese collector of the regular figures. I didn't realise the green one was so much smaller than the others!
Moog, do you (or anyone else) know what series those female yokai down in front are from (Rokuro Kubi and presumably Futakuchi Onna)?
I think those are from the Tomy sets, series two if I am not mistaken. Had a better pic somewhere, but for now here is one I 'borrowed.' Here is a pic of the package (I think they were sold as this set) and one showing the header
