Don't know if there is already a topic for this but I've Just watched The 2004 ''final wars'' and think it's the crappiest one ( too much Matrix influence ), but my favorite should be ''King-Kong vs Godzilla'' and the first B/W ''Gojira'' 1954.

The one with Jet jaguar and the kid, it's in my top 5, agree with JL on the bad guys and the cars, the 70's touch is so good!

I didn't even realize a lot of those Kurosawa movies were Toho. A bunch of his movies have been rereleased on Criterion. I especially like the cinematography in Rashomon (not Toho).

Crackle has a bunch of Godzilla movies up for free.

It's cool this thread has been bumped, but I wanted to try to both expand and contract it a bit:

Toho has been around since the 1932 and has produced dozens of amazing films in those 80 years. We've got a great thread going for Japanese films in general and I think discussion of the whole of Toho would go great there - viewtopic.php?f=5&t=39623

I think this thread was probably started to cover Toho SF films, Godzilla, et al

Here's a list of their wonderful world of toku:

    Godzilla (1954)
    Godzilla Raids Again (1955)
    Half Human (1955)
    Vampire Moth (1956)
    Rodan (1956)
    The Mysterians (1957)
    The H-Man (1958)
    Varan (1958)
    Battle in Outer Space (1959)

    The Human Vapor (1960)
    Mothra (1961)
    Gorath (1962)
    King Kong vs Godzilla (1962)
    Matango (1963)
    Atragon (1963)
    Mothra vs Godzilla (1964)
    Dogora (1964)
    Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964)
    Frankenstein Conquers the World (1965)
    Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965)
    War of the Gargantuas (1966)
Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster (1966)
    Son of Godzilla (1967)
    King Kong Escapes (1967)
    Destroy All Monsters (1968)
    Latitude Zero (1969)
    All Monsters Attack (1969)

    Space Amoeba (1970)
    Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971)
    Daigoro vs. Goliath (1971)
Young Guy vs. Blue Guy (1971)
    Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972)
    Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973)
    Japan Sinks (1973)
    Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974)
    Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975)
    Zero Fighter (1976)
    The War in Space (1977)

    @

    The Return of Godzilla (1984)
    Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989)

    Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991)
Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth (1992)
    Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993)
    Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla (1994)
    Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995)
Gamera: Guardian of the Universe (1995)
Gamera 2: Attack of Legion (1996)
    Rebirth of Mothra (1996)
    Rebirth of Mothra II (1997)
    Rebirth of Mothra III (1998)
Gamera 3: Awakening of Irys (1999)
    Godzilla 2000: Millennium (1999)

    Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000)
Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001)
    Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002)
Godzilla, Mothra, Mechagodzilla: Tokyo S.O.S (2003)
    Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)

    Pardon my pucker!

I've never seen Young Guy vs. Blue Guy or Zone Fighter, but other than than that I'd say that every toku from '54 - '77 has something to recommend about it. Hard for me to pluck a favorite, but Godzilla, Matango, Gargantuas and Hedorah are hard to beat.

Of those produced after the heyday, GMK is definitely my favorite. It's a really good reimagining of the mythology, and I'm completely in love with the modern take on Baragon.

Allow me to bump an old thread again, as a new person, but I didn't want to start a new "What's your favorite Godzilla?" thread. For me, "Godzilla Raids Again" is my favorite Godzilla movie for some reason. I know it's an odd pick for #1 favorite, but I think it's the best formula for Godzilla. Mankind Vs Godzilla, Godzilla Vs Monster. Still has the original bad guy type Godzilla with the humans fighting him, and we still get a great fight with another great monster. I think this should be the template for the 2014 reboot, one other monster and a Godzilla that's not so nice. I think it essentially will be something like that in fact.

Oh, and I do have a soft spot for the incredible silliness of Godzilla Vs Megalon, glad to see it getting some love. First Godzilla movie I ever saw, bought it on VHS in 1988.

Space Monster Dogora is underrated. That's probably my favorite, now that I've watched through most of the Toho library. It has jewel heists, monsters (of course), humor, and some great special effects. And when you finally see Dogora materialize in the sky...maybe it's just me, but that's one of the most frightening things I've seen in a kaiju movie.

@phantomfauna @Waterbear Definitely one of the more exaggerated and weird, but still pretty damn horrifying offerings in Japanese horror cinema. I’ve never seen it said anywhere as such, but I feel like this movie could’ve easily influenced Raimi. Not sure how many people actually know this is a Toho production. If you didn’t actually look for it I feel like it’d go(it goes) unnoticed. Glad it’s on HBO Max. I’ll be rewatching tonight.
