This just proves what a casual player i must be, because i've played 185 hours of TOTK and i don't even know what a damage 'buff' is. I've just been fusing weapons to Lynel horns and that seems to up the damage quite well.

Anything good to check out on the PS5 lately? Just went through the last of my little backlog: Assassin's Creed Valhalla (horrendous), Spiderman Miles Morales (A+), and God of War Ragnarok (A++). Looking for a new adventure game to immerse myself into that isn't Elden Ring.

From what everyone’s been telling me, Baldur’s Gate 3 is fantastic. Definitely playing that after Starfield is over with.

Can confirm Baldurs Gate 3 is incredible! It is turn based and has a fair amount of item/inventory management which seems to be the breaking point for some people. If you played either of the Divinity games, that's basically what you're in for.

For something more action oriented Ghost of Tsushima is also incredible if you haven't played that. I missed the boat on Horizon, but those have been my "in between games" games and they're fun.

Until Baldurs Gate, Cult of the lamb has been my favorite game I've played in quite some time.

I hesitate to recommend Biomutant because it's pretty shallow, but is fun enough to kill some time on. Kingdoms of Amalur is also fun if you haven't checked that out yet. Both of those should be cheap at this point.

Cyberpunk just rolled out their final / massive free update recently too, although I haven't checked that out yet, I hear it makes th game actually good.

I'm about 200 hours into starfield. Personally, I'm enjoying it quite a bit.
It's not as good as Fallout and it's not as good as Skyrim. But it's fun.
I wish it had more personality, especially with how huge it is.
    But it's still great.
    So is Balders gate.
I can go for years without anything i want to play coming out and then all around the same time there's been game releases that I have to pour my life into

I’ve been enjoying it. My goal is usually “every dollar should equal at least an hour played.” I’m 56 hours in now, I think. Definitely going to hit 70 hours and beyond the way it’s going. I think whether you’ll like it or not really depends on what kind of player you are. I was 100% okay with getting “Skyrim in space.” I also love exploring. I’m working on research for equipment upgrades, trying to build an outpost to collect copper, dropping in to random solar systems to see if I’ll run into other ships, saving my credits for a new ship, running around doing side quests… If you’re the kind of person who wants to just rush the story, it’s definitely not going to be worth what you paid for.
The biggest gripe I have with the game is the inventory system. Your ship has a limited cargo capacity measured by weight. When building or modifying anything, the resources must be in your ship cargo or on you. Problem is that the cargo fills way too fast. Resources can weigh a crazy amount. Inventory management is kind of hell. If you’re going to play the game as-is and unmodded, I highly recommend just getting an inventory mod or a mod that makes resources have reduced or no weight. It is by far the most frustrating part of the game.

Stupid question here, but mod would be PC only, correct? Nothing like that exists for consoles?

I have no idea unfortunately, I haven’t had consoles for ages, besides the Switch. And when I say ages, I mean the only consoles I have are the PS2 and a GameCube.

Thats a coincidence, because they're the two consoles i have as well (besides Switch Lite). My PS2 probably needs a lens clean, last time i played San Andreas it kept glitching out ... I regret getting rid of all my other consoles / games by trading them in back in the day. That was what everybody did back then.

Speaking of Switch Lite, i bought 'Red Dead Redemption' on the switch a few weeks ago and i'm enjoying it (in-between TOTK). It runs really well and the graphics look great, i think its a slightly polished port of the Xbox enhanced version. The controls / movement is a bit clunky compared to new games but it does'nt matter too much. I'm getting used to it. I've never played it before, and i'm very impressed with the voice acting and story so far. In fact everything is really good, even the music score.

I'm loving Super Mario Wonder! Still not sure about the elephant character design, but otherwise the visuals and game-play are great.

Ditto on Super Mario Wonder. I hardly have time to play video games nowadays but I had to borrow a console and pick up a copy of the game. Havent played much yet but from what I have played, its fantastic!

looking for some game recs for SNES and Genesis. I have a modded psvita w every game ever (ps1 and earlier) and I always end up playing shit I've already played. Would love to hear some favorites that arent really that well known or are underrated.

Have you already played RDR2? If not, avoid spoilers as the games tie the two stories together really well! I played RDR2 and immediately replayed RDR. I'm not a huge fan of Rockstars control schemes, but the stories of those games are fantastic. The entire way the narrative is constructed in RDR2 is outstanding.

I've got a VITA sitting around i'm doing absolutely nothing with, and this would be awesome. Is this something you did yourself / do you have any instructions?

Not sure what genre you're looking for so I'm just going to list some of my favorites :D

    For Genesis:
    • The first thing that came to mind was Beyond Oasis. I looooved that game, but no one ever seems to have played it. It's very much built in the vein of older Zelda games if you like those.
    • Comix Zone is basically impossible to actually beat, but it's fun to play for a bit and is visually fantastic.
    • Ristar is really fun if you like Mario / platformers (this was pretty popular at the time).
    • Shining Force II is a great strategy RPG in the vein of Fire Emblem
    • X-Men II is super fun if you like side scrolling beat 'em ups and Marvel.
    • Pirates of Dark Water is a really fun beat 'em up side scroll too.
    • Desert Strike if you want to shoot charlie with a helicopter or something (young me didn't quite grasp the grossness of a straight war game), and it's pretty fun if you don't think about it too hard.
    For SNES
The SNES is a god damn treasure trove of JRPGs if so if you like those there's a bunch!
    • Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen is super fun and if you've never played an RPG of this style it might peak your interest.
      • Sub note here: Ogre Battle 64 is a top 5 (3ish) game of all time for me. So if you can emulate a 64, check this out for sure!
    • I completely missed the boat on Earthbound so no first hand experience here, but the franchise / main character was popular enough to make it into Smash Brothers; so it can't suck right!?
      • Same thing for Harvest Moon sans the Smash Bros thing.
    • Shadow Run was super rad and started my love affair with that franchise. There are cheap modernish Shadowrun games on STEAM that are great too.
    • In order of my preference Secret of Mana, Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy IV are all must plays if you've missed any of those.
    • Rocket Knight Adventures is basically Sonic meets Contra.
    • If you like sportsball and unethical decisions Mutant League Football is fun.
    • Tiny Toons Wacky Sports Adventures is a game I played a ton with my buddy, but I honestly, can't actually say if it's actually good. I just remember playing it a lot. It's got a bunch of minigames which might be more fun with a real person to compete against...
That's about all I've got for SNES. I didn't actually own one, but I would swap my Genesis for my buddies SNES and almost always played some sort of JRPG when I had the system.

and you didn't ask for PS1 recommendations, but while I'm here I might as well:
    • It was extremely popular, but Castlevania Symphony of the Night is a top 5 game of all time for me.
    • Xenogears was my FFVII. It's got some warts (tons of unskippable dialog, a batshit story, and a super rushed ending because they apparently ran out of money), but I still love it. I replayed it about 18 months ago and it held up enough for me to love it. It's a legit good Square RPG, but YMMV.
    • Ready to Rumble Boxing was a legit boxing game, but had the wackiness of Punch Out.
    • Hexen was medieval Doom, but it was better and I'll die on this hill.
    • Speaking of medieval, Medievil and Medievil II are both wonderful games. Medievil got a remake not too long ago, but they fucked up the controls so definitely play the original.
    • Alundra was extremely underrated and is basically the Zelda franchise that never was.
    • Different than Alundra in that it was 3D, Brave Fencer Musashi was also a character that I thought was shooing to wind up a mascot character.
    • WCW vs The World for some good ole fashioned wrasslin'. This game also laid the groundwork for the greatest wrestling game WWF No Mercy.
    • The Bushido Blade games were super fun and unique. Based around sword duels it was more realistic in that you could kill your opponent with one strike. Actually hard to believe there hasn't been something modern made in this style.
    • I remember liking Lunar Silver Star Story, but I don't actually remember much about the actual game.
Hope there's something in there that peaks your interest. Bit of fun going down memory lane, heh.

No, and yeah, my brother mentioned its a prequel which i thought was a great idea ... I think they're going to port RDR2 to the Switch, so i will be playing that one too at some point i would think.

This bundle i bought a while ago really hit the spot. If you enjoy games like Streets of Rage or Golden Axe, they're all a lot of fun.

Final Fight - Captain Commando - The King of Dragons - Knights of the Round - Warriors of Fate - Armored Warriors - Battle Circuit

And ... if you have access to NEO GEO, there's a ton of great games on that platform. Two of my faves are 'Mutation Nation' which is another beat 'em up. Its full of mad characters and classic 80's weirdness. The other one is 'Blazing Star', which is a favourite of mine amongst the old school shmups.

... and while i'm here. This is an example of the kind of idiot that gets on my nerves on facebook groups. The performance-snob. This guy had pretty much every comment on his post disagreeing with him. I commented that every single retro and modern game port i've played on the Switch has been bang-on and perfectly playable. I mean, as if Nintendo NEED to do anything different. They had one of the fastest selling games ever with TOTK, and the Super Mario Bros. Movie recently smashed all box office records. They're doing perfectly fine as it is and don't NEED stupid advice from a complete dumbass!

thanks alot for the recommendations guys. I'll add them to my list!

@Horsefeathers I've played a good amount of those, but there are a few I've never heard of that seem awesome. Rocket Knight Adventures sounds pretty interesting.

You can mod Psvitas pretty easily I guess but then you have to get all the games and stuff yourself. There are videos on youtube.
I needed to buy a vita so I got mine fully loaded from pspguru on IG. Pretty sure you could send your vita to him for modding if you already own one though. He does a really great job.

@The Moog I will definitely be checking out blazing star later. I've been playing Einhander for PS1. Really cool if you've never played it.

Hadn't heard of that one, it looks really good. Another Neo Geo shmup I enjoy is X MULTIPLY, It takes place inside a human body so you're fighting viruses and stuff. It's pretty weird, and is a bit more difficult than Blazing Star IMO. Definitely worth a try though.

Oh, and also 'Hacha Mecha Fighter'. It's a cute 'em up that's great quality with a very infectious soundtrack. Also 'In The Hunt' a submarine side scrolling shmup made by the team who did Metal Slug. It's crazy good.

Checking in to say I got Super Mario Wonder on Sunday. So far so good. I’ve only got about an hour or two logged in but I’m enjoying it. My favorite Mario titles are the sidescrollers.

Actraiser was a SNES game I remember loving. Beating it was ridiculously difficult at the time, not sure if that holds up.

Started unlocking the depths map in TOTK after all this time. In other words, built a hoverbike that can fly straight and got a full row of battery cells.

Yeah, thats how i did most of the Lightroots. How anybody does all that on foot is beyond me. The hoverbike helped me really appreciate the desolate beauty of the depths.

I recently started Star Ocean Second Story R. So far it has really enjoyable combat. Graphics are stunning on my Gaming Laptop. I like the HD2D look to this game a lot. The Characters and enemies are 16-bit but all of the backgrounds and the overworld is 3D. I feel like the developers really nailed the combination of both styles effortlessly. any one else playing this? did anyone play the original game on the PSX?

Shikhondo: Soul Eater for the Switch. Its a very beautifully designed Shmup. Kinda Ukiyo-e print themed with Yokai enemies, developed by a Korean team. They do throw a few Korean ghosties in there too, for fun.

I'm enjoying the Bullet Graze function, where the closer you get to enemy fire, the higher a special meter goes up which can be used for bigger types of attacks. Also, i love the one button focus-fire and slowdown that a lot of Cave shmups have too. It really helps with larger enemies and weaving between bullet patterns.

Its not a bad Shmup, probably on the easier side but it plays well and looks stunning. The sound effects could be better but the music score is decent, kinda dubstep style, nicely arranged to be in time with the gameplay. Overall well worth a look, glad i bought it.
