Of course this toy is very expensive. But for the majority of people spending 200$ on an ugly, poorly painted plastic dinosaur is already indecent ... What is a fair price for excellence ? No idea. But is this hobby rational ? Is passion rational?

 

If I would have to compare this toy another one, I would go for one of the M1 DX figure, Tetsujin or Hedorah, mainly for the size comparison.
As far as I can remember, prices were around $200 or $400 for those?
So basically, one would pay $1400 additionnaly for a carton box, some (nice) omake and a puzzle?
Honestly, however I look at this, I don't see any rational logic...

Price aside, The quality of these new toys, art of poster, design of the box, vintage coolness of the puzzle are just unmatched. ILLU ILLU is the Real Deal.

 

My favorite part of this entire package is the sticker set. I know it's unlikely but I'd love to see the small dino cars get paired up with a sticker or two and sold in semi affordable little sets.

The laser gun on the top of the head reminds me of Bakutari. Its the kind of whacky detail that shouldn't work, but in fact works really well and adds charm to the character.

 

Some of the packaging illustrations seemed to show it pitching up and down as well, so maybe there's a tiny joint hidden in there. Could just as easily be a quirk of the box art though.

Noticed recently: in very first photo on the first page of this thread, the Aaban Kaiju are sitting on golden bases. The bases have lettering embossed on them, though I can only make out "sofubi".

Does anyone know the story behind those? Have they ever been seen in the wild, or just in that promotional image? I don't believe this has been asked before in the thread, and given that a bagged Aaban Kaiju is among the rarest Ilu finds in my experience, to say nothing of a full carded set, I'm wondering if these might be another pack-in that escaped our attention. Or just an undiscussed element of an early convention display ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

 

The golden bases are just for his display pieces. They were not made for sale. They say "Iru Iru Sofubi" on them. You could have bought a full card set back in the day when they were released from Lulubell Toys.

I realize I've only been collecting for about 7 years. But, even then... how the hell have I never discovered this maker. I just accidentally stumbled across an Aaban somewhere and wanted to know more. Then BAM... whole new planet of toys founded by an apparently legendary designer I had just totally missed the memo about.

So... I can has Aaaban? Pwease?

 

Weirdly enough the finger-puppets have been the most difficult for me to find. Probably since they were the first release, plus people aren't getting 1k to sell them (just yet). I think the owls do crop up more often than the others though, so best of luck!

 

Ha! Of course. This is like how when I first started browsing vinyls, I'd save images of all my favs not even knowing makers or companies. Eventually found out many were Hirota figures and how that was... a whole deal. Yet, if I could have any Hirota of my choosing, all I'd honestly want is the larger Andros stretch alien

It's a cool looking toy, but that price is hilarious.

 

Oh well. I was steeling myself to sell and save whatever it took for this, but every new release bumps up enough to unpleasantly surprise me.

At some point I will have to go hunting for the earlier release, which I much prefer. It'll take some monstrous trades and probably a little blood sacrifice, I'm sure.

Ignoring the price for a sec, I don't like the bulkier new head cannon, and the omake aren't doing it for me. Makes it easier to miss, thankfully.
