The month is already over halfway through and it seems I've replaced my horrific-a-day seasonal habit with just obsessively keeping up with current events. Anyone doing a better job than me of taking in fictional horror stories this October? I could use some suggestions!
I really enjoyed the haunting of hill house on netflix and the second season just came out. Unrelated to the first apparently but the same people. Getting lots of good reviews.
I watched Haunting of Hill House a couple years ago when they were hyping it up super hard. I’m glad it lives up to expectations. With The Haunting of Bly Manor(current season) it’s from the same creator, just new story and new house. Only four actors from Hill House returned for new roles this season, though. We’re on episode six and it’s been great. If you have Shudder I’d highly suggest the In Search of Darkness documentary. It chronicles horror movies from b to major production throughout the 80’s. If you don’t have Shudder you can rent it on Amazon prime. The second part to it releases sometime this month, though I can’t remember exactly when.
Wow. Been disturbingly quiet here for a awhile.... Considering 'tis the season, anyone have new-ish (at least since the last thead action) rec's they care to share? A couple that come to mind: V/H/S/94 - hit or miss (as to be expected) / 2 of the 4 entries were pretty solid imo. Titane - not traditional horror per se, but more than enough body horror to qualify. Hatching Haven't seen Bruckner's Hellraiser reboot yet. Prob will this week after giving the OG a rewatch. Also planning on Barbarian when it hits HBO (supposedly 10/25). Hopefully it lives up to the hype.
Smile was as disturbing as expected. Strongly recommend to people liking that sort of things. Seeing all those giant spiders people put in front of their home inspired me to re watch eight legged freaks the other night. I forgot those spiders makes similar sounds as gremlins!?!
Been disappointed with everything we've streamed so far: TX Chainsaw Massacre Hellraiser My Best Friend's Exorcism Scream 7902427897892357 Some other forgettable crap that I can't even remember
Agreed. The bar for horror is so low. On the upswing, though, Prime has Kiyoshi Kurasawa's Pulse (heavily atmospheric.See the original and not the crappy Hollywood redo) and, while not litearally horror, The Northman (Robert Eggars shooting a viking fable with alot of supernatural viking shit in the mix).
In case any of you don't mind having a look at what somebody else thinks you should look at, and at when they decide you should, you could do so much worse than pay attention to CATHODE TV this month. I am going for a Hammer horror theme. Started with The Mummy and The Curse of Frankenstein. Next The Horror of Dracula. Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee were kind of the Hope and Crosby of British horror.
Well on Halloween night we finally found a decent horror movie - Barbarian on HBO. You'll have to overlook characters who are impossibly stupid and/or impossibly brave, and some some things that defy the laws of nature. But it creeped me out more than anything else we watched this month.
@---NT--- I just watched this with a buddy of mine over the weekend, and holy shit, did it make me anxious. Literally not knowing what direction this movie is even attempting to go in was a weird, but enjoyable ride. Can’t say I’d watch it again(with one exception being with the lady), but it was worth the one watch.
Yep - that's what I kept remarking to my wife! Quite anxiety-inducing! But yeah, agree on it not being something I'd go back to like some classics/greats. Just a fun one-timer.
@---NT--- @xSuicide Squadx Glad to see you guys had the same experience with Barbarian. While my overall rating is a tad more generous (heavily due to all the duds I sat through last month), I get where you're coming from. The real power of the movie comes from going in blind and strapping in for the ride. 100% safe to say the law of diminishing returns kicks in heavy after the 1st watch. All said, it was still 10x better than any of the recent horror I've seen put out over the last few years.
After a couple years toying with the idea, finally knocked out an October “31 in 31”. Had written it off again heading into the month (hence the late start), then a change of heart and decided to take a proper stab at one. Fell into a European-based theme early on. So that (initally), a post-2000 release date (RotLD annual watch being the only outlier) & heavy focus on movies not seen before became the framework to keep things streamlined. *1st time views in bold. For lack of more original color coding: - Impressed (would rewatch) in red - Time wasted (once was more than enough) in green The rest of the 1st timer's ranged from 'okay' to 'whatever'. So without any further ado… my good, bad & ugly of Oct ’22: 10/3: The Night House (2020) 10/4: XX (2017) 10/5: Hatching ‘Pahanhautoja’ (2022) 10/6: Hostel (2005) 10/7: The Ritual (2017) 10/8: As Above, So Below (2014) 10/9: Raw ‘Grave’ (2016) 10/10: Titane (2021) 10/11: Martyrs (200 10/12: High Tension ‘Haute tension’ (2003) 10/13: In My Skin ‘Dans ma peau’ (2002) 10/14: Frontier(s) ‘Frontière(s)’ (2007) 10/15: Inside ‘À l'intérieur’ (2007) & Them ‘Ils’ (2006) 10/16: The Ordeal ‘Calvaire’ (2004) 10/17: Dead Snow ‘Død snø’ (2009) 10/18: Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead (2014) 10/19: Satan ‘Sheitan’ (2006) 10/20: The Horde ‘La Horde’ (2009) 10/21: Livid ‘Livide’ (2011) 10/22: Baskin (2015) 10/23: [REC] (2007) & [REC]2 (2009) 10/24: Last Shift (2014) 10/25: V/H/S/2 (2013) 10/26: Kuso (2017) 10/27: We Are Still Here (2015) 10/28: Deathgasm (2015) 10/29: Ready or Not (2019) 10/30: Barbarian (2022) 10/31: Terrifier (2016) & The Return of the Living Dead (1985) Hope you all got some good flicks in this spooky season… Solid rec’s are always welcomed.
Some things I watched this holiday season: Barbarian was a solid one time watch! Definitely agree with having to ignore impossible stupidity. X was fun and makes me look forward to Pearl. I watched Event Horizon for the first time, and it immediately catapulted to one of my all time favorites. Not sure if I'd call it horror, but I really enjoyed MOON. Grave Encounters was fine if you're found footage fan, but I was sort of bored by it. Ready or Not was a really good horror comedy. Fun premise, and straddles the line between serious and silly well. Luz and the Flower of Evil is acted well and the cinematography / film choice is beautiful, but I found it the sum of its parts better than the whole. Edit: I missed some of these on the list above. As above so below is also one of my favorites!
Reviving this thread! Watched “His House” (2020) last week. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 100%, which is so bizarre for horror films, so I just had to see it. Overall it was pretty intriguing, but it was way different from the slow-burn horror I’ve become accustomed to. Everything moved pretty quickly. I almost feel like it should have been longer. I also really hope that the horror genre makes more movies steeped in folklore of other cultures. I think to a certain extent the whole American “tortured spirit of someone who died in the 1900’s” haunted house shtick is really played. This felt fresh and I feel that it made the movie even scarier.
