Dead and Buried! Such an underrated film that no one really knows about!! I need to get on that. There is shudder and a few others that just started.
Grindhouse releasing is putting out Pieces on Blu-Ray. First 3000 copies come with a fucking puzzle. HOW COOL IS THAT?!?!?!?
I actually Just started the free trial subscription today, Mark. I'm not sure how you're streaming through your television, but I use Roku, and Shudder has their own channel.
We stream through our TVs, both are Vizio smart TVs with certain apps already on them. I had seen that you could stream Sudder through a Roku, but I couldn't justify getting a whole other device just to satisfy my horror needs. Can't decide what to watch next, but most likely it'll be Tourist Trap. I remember watching that when it played on a local channel on a Saturday afternoon and it creeped the shit out of me. Plus, Tanya Roberts!!
I was reminded today of my favorite made-for-tv horror film ever, 1974's Bad Ronald: John Vernon of PFFR mentioned in an interview that he's always wanted to rewrite it for Chris Elliott. A damn fine idea, actually.
The other Jacoby boy! He does a good turn in one of my faves, The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane.
Love that movie! Hadn't heard of it as a kid, only coming across it thanks to a bargain-prioced Anchor Bay DVD years back. It's no Don't Look Now - what is? - but plenty creepy and satisfying nonetheless. That movie is the shit, too! Young Jodie. Info is out there, of course, but I'd always recommend jumping in knowing as little as possible about what you're going to watch. I guess it's available now through Warner's burn-to-order service, or I'd be happy to point you towards more clandestine ways of acquiring a copy.
Tourist Trap still holds up. Creepy as all get out, with a great cast. Maybe one too many "chase through the trees" scenes, but can't complain about much else. I remember as a kid assuming, or rather hoping, that the lagoon scene must have had nudity, but nope. Catching another missed classic today, Sleepaway Camp. Kinda glad I didn't see it when I was younger, the ending would most likely have traumatized me. Some inventive death scenes here, and they make the most of the low-budget. But boy oh boy that ending!!
Watched the US remake of Martyrs last night...as you might imagine, it was a turd! Why even bother remaking something like Martyrs??!!
Because it's popular and has a name and will generate buzz on it's own AND most importantly because they already own the rights in the states so they don't have to pay for a new script. Taking a chance and failing once too often means you're fired so no one wants to take any chances. Which is why all you see for the most part is tepid safe bet garbage.
Same story here; just caught it for the first time within the last few years. I can't think of any other movie that had a creepier reveal to me than Sleepaway Camp. You may figure out who the killer is early, but that won't take away the intensity of the end At All. So many movies are forgettable, but not that one. Just thinking about that face, yikes. I give SC two severed thumbs up (that's a good thing).
Couldn't agree more! I'm glad shout/scream factory re-released this. Super original for its time and something that holds up.
Yeah, that face. Plus, ya know, the other thing. The other thing I took away from it was the New York-ness (or maybe New Jersey-ness?) of it. The accents, the cussing, the tough-guy attitudes. Very locale specific.
OK you guys have inspired me to re-watch this movie. I've never seen part 2 or 3, will try to do a marathon this weekend.
I was going to post about this, but realized ultrakaiju said everything I could possibly say about this piece of junk. There was one redeeming nugget for me though... It supposedly takes place in my beautiful home town.
That's a neat set! I wish Scream Factory made a box set like that instead of single releases. I only have the first movie on Blu-ray, which looks pretty damn good.
Just saw JeruZalem and I was expecting to hate it but I had lots of fun watching it. Slow build up after a cool opening sequence but even the travel stuff is interesting. Had a total Cloverfield vibe actually. The smartglass gimmick started out really annoying but once you get past that it's not a big deal. Basically a Cloverfield with demons is what you get. Very decent acting as well. Mostly hit or miss special effects but a fun ride for sure.
Not a Horror Movie, but related I guess? For anyone interested, John Carpenter is releasing another album, Lost Themes II in April. Again, not a movie, but I feel like most of you fine folks could appreciate it. Love the first Lost Themes album.
Thanks to that Shudder subscription I plunged headlong into two of my faves, Demons and Demons 2. I like to think of them as unofficial offshoots of the Evil Dead franchise. Pretty much the same stuff, summoning Demons, tons of gore, etc., etc. Gonna watch The Church next.
I remember liking it a lot, maybe even more than the Demons duo. It's been forever and a day though, so I don't recall anything about the durn thing.
In my humble opinion its definitely better than the demons movies. I know that might go against the grain a bit but oh well.
