This arrived yesterday from the Ukraine: Gena the crocodile (from the Soviet stop motion animation film "Cheburashka")

Just did a little research into 'Cheburashka'. What an interesting show! And with great looking characters.

My brain keeps wondering if it was propaganda at all, and if so how blatant?

I know the protagonists are some animal who got rejected from the zoo, his croc friend and an evil old lady...



My imagination is running wild!

Cheburashka is very popular in Japan!

 

It was very popular in its day even in some of western europe, I studied it as a film student, there are subtle soviet prods here and there, but I think the intention was to make a show that focused on good moral stories. It would have been difficult to realize the show without running it through the machine at that time in Russia.

It is very popular in Japan and I think some films were redubbed for the Japanese market.

Thats a great Gena BTW - I have seen one on ebay with a fabric coat
