Recently rewatched Sansho the Bailiff on blu-ray. I didn't like this movie very much when I first saw it years ago, but it's become one of my favorite films. As a period piece, the level of detail and realism is incredible, down to the details of recreating estates and forced labor in 11th century Japan. Every shot looks like an ukiyo-e or scroll painting brought to life. It's a crushingly sad story, and lacks the excitement of a Kurosawa film, but I can't recommend it strongly enough if you're interested in period recreation or Japanese history. I'm also probably the only person here who had never seen the original Godzilla until this year. It goes without saying that release is fantastic. Throne of Blood comes out in January! I'm gonna skip the Zatoichi set for now but I'll probably pick it up at some point.
Looks like Barnes and Noble is doing 50% off Criterion. Totally unrelated ... shopping for dvds brought back a weird memory - I just thought of a site that was doing a "1 cent" sale on dvds and cd's - it was a loooong time ago .. back when Amazon was sorta going head to head with buy.com ... Can't remember the site -- it had some "hip" name - in the 90's ... You could order 3 titles - and I actually got them, although it took like a month .. Anyone remember that ? - think it was 800.com?
I actually drove out to the BN I normally go to when the Criterion DVDs go on sale only to find the DVD section had been completely removed?! When I asked what happened they told me they no longer carry DVDs and the stock was moved to another location a half an hour away. Can one take advantage of the sale through the website or is it just in store? Edit: yes you can, fuck leaving the house.
ugh the Zatoichi set is tempting. I've seen most of the movies and don't really feel the need to own em all, but it's so pretty...
I'm always disappointed though since most of what I want has not been upgraded to blu-ray and I'm definitely not buying DVDs anymore...
Anyone want to do the good deed of the day? (No shipping to Mexico) edit. I've been taken care of... thank you those who offered to help me!
Not 50% off, but exciting news IMO - The Complete Jacques Tati http://www.criterion.com/boxsets/1069-t ... ues%20Tati
Yeah this happened to me last year when I raced over to see what they had. "We no longer carry DVD's or CD's!" she said. Didn't bother going this year.
