Did the site go down? Tried going to the site and it said domain name for sale. Shame that's an excellent kaiju resource.
more than likely they are suffering from bad ISP. My last website, that some of you will probably remember, had a terrible time with that. My original ISP was under perpetual attacks from hackers in China so I switched over to this place in Canada....that turned out to be one of the more notorious ISPs for bad service...then they just up and disappeared, causing thousands of small sites to lose all of their info.
I've noticed that whenever I save club tokyo to my bookmarks on safari, whenever I return I have to click on it twice because it says "can't open isp with null value". The 2nd time it comes up for some reason. Don't know if this has anything to do with the site itself?
Help! Can't seem to bring up the "Figures" reference pages. Some of the site is working, but not the Figures section...
Same happened to me when I tried to look up some minis today. Did they retire or sell out to another site? I got a different kaiju site on third try, but it may have been a fat fingered click or something.
It looks like there is a pretty complete backup of the figure reference at archive.org. It's slow, but the site has been online for so long, most of the vintage listings should have been captured at one point or another. https://web.archive.org/web/20170730224405/http://clubtokyo.org:80/listings/index.php?catID=1
@Mr. Humphreys @poysntixels - Club Tokyo is still active. I will let Richard Cox know the site is down. Sometimes the site goes down without him knowing. He will get it back up and running. FYI - There is also a Club Tokyo Facebook.
I know we bring this up on a somewhat regular basis here, but if any of CT guys are active here, just to say that there are still loads of us who use the site on a regular basis - and very much appreciate all of your efforts through the years. I would really love to see more occasional updates on the site, fully realising this is a completely voluntary basis. If there is any assistance members of the community here could lend to held document/support the database, please do reach out. Total aside - revisiting these threads still makes me sad.
Totally agree with @ultrakaiju , the Club Tokyo site was my first resource into this area of collecting and is still something I use regularly. Being a non japanese site with such a significant database also adds too its importance, as ultrakaiju said I and I’m sure many others would be very happy to contribute in any way possible.
Saw on Facebook from Mike Johnson that CT's hosting expires tonight, and there are seemingly no plans to renew. The loss of information in English would be staggering, and I'm sad just thinking about it. We could look to the Internet Archive, but I'm not sure what the state of their copy is.
How maddening it is that I can't just definitively say that this is the worst news I've heard all day. Worst news without a body count, I guess. Anybody got the tech and drive space to scrape the place?
I just did a scrape of the site and have it saved locally, I think I got everything... but the more back ups the better. If we do lose the site I should be able to host a copy somewhere
I hope the info is saved! The site is fantastic for a n00b like myself who is just getting into vintage.
So I couldn't get a few of the site resources, which is strange since it's still up. I'll check up on those specifically later, since there's a chance they're not available on the actual site, too. At least there are two copies (ish!) saved now
@derphead Could you please let me know what you used to scrape? I was trying to get something running in PowerShell but had no luck.
I was also crushed when I heard this news last week. Each time it seems to go down or there is a change, I think you can rely on SB being one of the first places it's noticed (e.g. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]). I have mentioned on here more than once how influential and important resources like CT are for those outside of Japan, and how key it was when I was first getting into the hobby seriously (as opposed to just buying my own toys for play). And all these years later I still go there regularly. I've regularly championed here to offer to help out the guys (Richard and Chris) as this seems like just the sort of project the community could take on. I have even discussed with a few people here starting an independent database, but didn't want to step on their toes; it might be time to revisit that. I fully appreciate that it is their 'baby' and things started to get more than they could handle/they wanted to see about taking it in a new direction. It's tough to hear. But Richard has said that they have backed it all up, so the information is not totally gone. The silver lining here is that, from what Richard has said, they are still looking to possibly bring it back in some new or different form, so we can hold out yet for that. I know they are not that active here but I would really love to give a massive shoutout and sincere thanks to both @kinggoji and @KaijuHoarder for all they have given myself, and this whole community, through CT. Thanks guys, we really appreciate your efforts.
