All the stuff towards the end was great and more than worth the wait. I just wish more stuff had been produced that had the "oxidant" rub.
bbb, I believe that Anraku painted a batch of one-offs from extra lucky bag stock, that is what we were seeing with drill heads/drill chests etc. He must have had some old Cadmium drill attachments lying around. And then there was that one off black Drunk Boy that looked like it was newly painted by AA, maybe from old stock he had lying around. That one will haunt me forever. That is all just speculation on my part though. And thanks for the shots Ben. Very nice.
For anyone interested or who didn’t see them, here are photos from the auctions mentioned above, from around April 2015 I really wish i’d gone for one of those Cambodias now Not too sure about the Drills?! Final Goga Drill chest Mescalgon Drill ears Mescalgon Drill head Mescalgon One-off Mescalgon Yellow Cambodia Striped Yellow Cambodia Orange Cambodia Pink painted Drunk Boy Black/gold Drunk Boy
Thanks Ian! That final Goga was one of a run of 5 or 6. I hope Anraku paints again, and does some additional toys in this style. That Drunk Boy....man. I still prefer the original paint apps for the first black DBs but this is certainly still drool worthy. Mr. Medicom and Anraku, if you are watching, please give us a black preorder Drunk Boy!
I curious how that one looks out of the bag. The face looks like it has a paint rub and the bold gold paint on the arms.
Me too. Also would love to see what the back looks like, the paints on the back on the original black DB are truly stunning. Judging from the style I think that DB and the orange one -off Cambodia were painted more recently from old stock. But maybe not if it were a studio cleanout. Who knows. I will stop obsessing about every detail of AA's toys now.
Thanks for clearing some of that up. These are some of the most beautiful toys he's ever made. I wish it wasn't always such a mystery. It's exhausting.
There's a few from those auctions that I'd like to see showing more 'out of the bag' details! More recent snaps...
^^ The interest's been there for a while, I was just missing the toys (those auction pics, especially the Cambodias & Ian's shelf are insane btw)! Blue Goga is amazing in hand, absolutely no qc issues with mine; even the tail fits firmly, paint is spot-on and has more subtle details than the preview pictures let on (I was wondering why bryce referred to it as "blue/black" prior to receiving mine). I also have to say the sculpt is definitely an acquired taste for me - very happy I finally got to check one out in person and fully appreciate its charm. Anraku Lite rules afaic.
I never really 'got' Anraku. Incredibly elusive toys people seemed to go through any length to obtain. Besides the Dako mini set I don't own any and the only other one I did at one point was a clear blue Mescalgon that after awhile I was like- ehh underwhelming. I've always wanted a Dako that was not the plain jane orange and yellow version but was sad I could not afford the pre order price when the Medicom large came up. A nice SB member traded me for what I could not get at the time and I love this toy! Paint job is beautiful and it's just such a bizarre otherworldly sculpt. Plus RED Vinyl (rare) Enough said I'm convinced about Anraku.
Glad you got a hold of one! One of the best all time sculpts. I hope there are a few more Medicom colorways in the hopper honestly, Anraku never went crazy with Dako one-offs or runs and I feel like there's some great color combinations waiting to happen with this sculpt. Translucent red would be pretty interesting, but solid vinyl shows off the texture better with AA. EDIT- this rant should have been in the other AA discussion thread
This should stop any arguing about the quality of Medicom AA releases... Sunlight Bixie by plasticxo, on Flickr
Oh man, that noggin looks superb! Thanks for sharing the image. I continue to hope that we will get even more loving portraits of the new phase of AA releases in here, spectator that I am.
