I told my wife about this whole thing, and she's really bummed out. Not because she didn't get it, but in her own words. "Tara McPherson appears to possibly be a bit heartless, only caring about profits. Screwing fans over in the process....<\3".

    Shitty situation.

I think your completely right, he has been taken advantage of and its a shame because it tainted many people view of nags and Shig's work.

Wow, it left a bad taste in my mouth when CCM sold all the artist's cut of figures at their NYCC show and said is was because of miscommunication. This is even worse.

That "reaction shot" was just humiliating, especially for the first handpicked winner and falling short on cash. Wow.

All around, could have been communicated better. That just looked awkward.

But on an opposite note, Shig did a great job on the paint, and Tara made some cool header art. Also, still got to thank Greg/L'amour for bringing this stateside.

    Doesn't matter.

I'm sure people will always find the time to slam me because i don't do pre orders or have that convenience to do so.

Re: A Nag Pa I Root

I just feel like I need to comment since there is a lot of CCM/Tara McPherson bashing going on, and I just want to let you guys what I know...

-Sean came and talked to me about a month ago about strategizing the release of the Nagx3. I offered as much advice as I could. Listened to his plan, and help him strategize. What I did tell him that the most important things about the release were to 1) Let Shigeru know and be upfront about their intentions 2) haters are going to hate

-Without revealing the cost, I will let you know that $500 is not even FULL MARK UP of what they paid for the toy. I didn't know how much they were going to charge ( I of course had an idea, because of how much Mishka has charged in the past) but I will say that not only do I think the price is fair, Shigeru knew how much they were going to be selling it for.

-I have no idea how much Tara charges for illustration work. I do know she is a very busy and sought after international artist. Many of you may not realize this, but when you become a busy artist, your time is very valuable and you rarely have time to do free work. You have to choose your projects and collaborations carefully. I am not speaking for her at all, but I must imagine how it is. You guys can break down the math or do whatever you want to see how much she made, but I am pretty sure its less than what she would of charged to do the illustration out right for a project.

-I talked to Sean today about the auction/donation to charity. Not only does Shigeru know, he is happy that some money is going to charity and that Tara was able to receive some extra cash for the work that she put into it, seeing that he was not able to pay her any sort of fee.

I am not sure I have to go into the other stuff about that CCM is an art store gallery, this is an art project, they are in business to make money, etc. I just want to say that recently I have become friends with Sean and Tara, and I can say that they both genuinely care about their fans and their art. If you have ever been to the space and seen them in action then you know what I mean. I don't think anyone mentioned that they gave out 5 prints to people who didnt win the lottery.

Congrats to all who won, sorry to all who didnt, and looking forward to the next release of the Nagx3 in any form Shig chooses to release it. After all its HIS TOY, and HIS DECISION. Yes, really.

It seems that collecting Nags is like having an incredibly beautiful, but equally psychotic, girlfriend that demands you spend all your emotions, time & money on her.
The sex is great, but at what point do you have to walk away?

^^ Wait, what does that mean, exactly? The bit I put in bold. I'm confused, I guess by the "full markup" part- are you trying to say they were sold at a loss? What do you mean by "full markup" ? If profit was made, then there was mark up, right?

I'm just curious. I'm outside observer when it comes to these Nag toys, you just lost me with that sentence.

Re: A Nag Pa I Root

I would assume that Greg meant standard retail store mark up. As a store you know you need to make X % on your goods to cover rent, payroll bills etc. As a gallery they must make a certain amount to stay afloat. That is a lot different than running a business out of your home or garage. Not saying you don't know these things Pike but I do think people often don't take it into consideration as much as they should. Anyone who has owned their own business has an understanding of this that no general consumer will ever quite grasp. Not because they are dumb or ignorant but when your entire livelihood is tied to a business it becomes a different beast. It's much easier just to work for someone. I agree with Greg except about posting a 200 price, pulling it then charging 500. That is somewhat lame and becomes even more so if fans showed up ready to buy then had it dropped on their heads after they won the lottery.

Re: A Nag Pa I Root

oh, well generally retail is 2 X wholesale. But Japanese vinyl is never sold that way, most of the manufactures recommend a 65-75% mark up (in lieu of 100% mark up)

They could of charged more and be totally justified in doing so

    Correct.

I am not sure where it was said that it was going to be $200, does anyone have a link or source for this, because that was even LESS than what Shig was selling them for on his site, right?

Sean, also mentioned the price before anyone won, not sure why or why not they decided to to let people know the price. My friend Scien entered not knowing what was going on, but he was like, I thought it was gonna be $100 and maybe I would of bought it. These things are expensive, whether they are $250, $350, or $500

Ok. I hadn't thought about it that way, I guess I would have worded it differently. Thanks for clearing it up then.

Did I also forget the mention the shitty print we won was bent and folded to fit in the tube. Yeah that makes it worth it.

There is no way I would ever believe that CCM/Tara paid $250 each for these. Nice try though.

They took advantage of toy collectors knowing that at least 5 people would pay that. Plain and simple.

That's what almost all Japanese toy companies do. They charge the retail store the same they'd charge you or me if we bought direct. If you win a Nag lotto it's about $250 after shipping. Yen to dollar blows right now.

This is what happens. RxH in Japan from Mori - 3000-4000 Yen. From a US retailer $60-$75. That's how it's worked for years. I'm not defending anyone or their actions or saying those upset are unjustified, but I am defending this general truth of the sofubi world.

They paid more than $250 each. I saw the invoice.
