The fugliest toys you have seen while collecting.

Oh, this is Acidma’s toy! Okay, I’m totally familiar with his artwork, even more so with some of the header work he’s done for several artists! I don’t follow his account, so I wasn’t at all aware he had this goin’ on. His artwork is completely separated and stands on its own, but I still can’t help but see Ito in the toy itself. I do think this would look good alongside the Maggore by Trash Talk Toys, though.

Tis the season for shitty paint jobs.

Genuinely one of the worst paint jobs I have ever seen since I got into this hobby.

 

What do you have against his red star pasties??

 

Meh, I'm far more offended by the incorrect spelling of 'Lottery'.

 

Maybe the toy is named Terry, and they’re exclaiming “Lo, Terry!”

@The Moog I've always liked the idea of the Medici head of that figure but the body is just an absolute fail for me. The Rennaissance seems to remain an untapped area of inspiration which I think could turn out some really interesting figures but this one certainly ain't it...

 

I really like the head sculpt and the paint work on the head is nice too. Not a fan of that particular body sculpt though. I remember seeing the body originally with a different head and reading about how he was sculpting an entire figure by hand without any modern tools at all. Cool concept for sure and I respect the process but the end result wasn't something I'd buy personally. With this head it almost looks like a marble statue in the process of being carved. Like it's only partially finished which looked cool in blank white vinyl and blank grey vinyl but doesn't seem to lend itself to painting. The clown head is really cool though.

 

I think that head is just a 3d print of Michelangelo's David

 

Why do you think that?

 

It looks like a random Grody mash-up to me. With a Nag influenced body. Of course, each to their own, nobody has to agree with the toys I post here, I'm just being mean and uncharitable about people's work, because its fun and I think the indie toy world has become over saturated with lazy tripe.

Again, my main criticism is the price tag and the paint job, but that kind of classical head plonked on a monster body would always look a bit lame too me. The shitty 'Joker tribute' paint app is just the poop icing on a turd cake.

 

Just the usual, uninspired, Mr.-Brainwash-y pastiche - mainly posting this for the great job somebody did of blurring out the background...

I'm looking at Nagata painted customs again, and my opinion is the same. Somebody please wrestle the airbrush out of his hand, and confiscate all his paints. He must be stopped.

These remind me of transparent tropical fish they used to sell in my local Aquatic centre. Some opportunistic person used to paint day-glo ink on their sides with a brush, to jazz them up a bit (true story) which I'm pretty sure was bad for the fish. They probably sold well to idiots, but they looked fucking lame. I can say the same for these poor toys. They look like tacky Christmas baubles with a big price tag. People swoon over these customs!!

 

I’m no art/design snob, but I think every law of the color wheel has been broken here.

 

Minority report, but I like what Mark did with the Giant Gorilla. Looks a bit inspired by the Spectreman nemesis Dr. Gori.

 

I too find this gorilla OK (maybe I'm aroused by it's butt) but I also see Mark completely loose elsewhere, as if he forfeited color arrangement.

 

As a victim of my own art, I believe...and this is just my opinion....I believe they're all "too busy". Some people may enjoy that though and that's fine, but they're too busy for my eyes.

This mini Eyezon is what I think more people should be aiming for, paint-wise. Not necessarily the color combo as it's not my favorite, but I'm talking about the number of colors used and they were used overall. Sparingly but just enough to accent the overall shape of the toy. The painted eyeballs help a lot to in tying the paint applications on the toy together.


That's just my 2 cents. I could only ever dream of being in Mark's current position in life. The Tripus painting session at the old Monster Kolor studios in MA was my initial introduction to sofubi, so I owe a lot to Mark's stuff as a whole I suppose.

 

Yep. That is a great toy, and a good paint job. I'd like to own that myself. Like I said before, just because Mark is a successful toy maker and designer, it doesn't automatically mean he's got an eye for painting. I respect Nagata and his toys, but most of these 'customs' look like a dog's dinner. They look like some kid was let loose with a box of crayons.

These 'customs' go for much higher amounts of money than the production run versions. I think these toys are expensive enough, without overpaying for fucked up paint apps too!

 

This seems like an overall problems with one offs especially for shows. The artist feels obligated to apply extra paint to charge more and the result is often an overspray. An even bigger problem with customs where people feel like they have to outdo a run by that artist to gain recognition.

 

To be fair, the box could've been the one decent design element. If it covered the whole figure and said "INCINERATE".

 

Paint looks so much better when it compliments the color of the vinyl instead of completely covering it or fighting with it. Part of the problem is that so many new painters don't use specialty vinyl paint and need to seriously clear coat the entire figure in what is basically clear resin to protect the paint work. Looks kind of stupid when they use a minimal paint job but the whole figure gets coated anyway and looks wet and slick and shiny forever.

 

This being one of my top wants, seeing this is an absolute tragedy..
