I was thinking last night about how, while sofubi certainly meets my 'badass playable toy' needs and then some, there aren't many toys that elicit really powerful sadness in me. Sure, I love the aggression and almost palpable pain I see when I look at MVH's Berserker, or the childlike joy of swinging a Deathra around in one hand, but I don't personally feel quiet, cold and meditative when I handle most of my toys. I think Kumon is special because it does exactly that. The (very beautiful) bright colours mask it a little, but in darker shades it really hits me: the focus on texture and gentle curves, the restrained and considered form that could be monstrous or just quiet and lonely depending on the light and how close you are, the lines all over the body pulling your eyes towards the skull. I love Kumon because imo it's a beautiful example of balance. Enough flair to stick hard in your head, enough restraint to feel meditative, grim and yes, a little sad. Just something that was on my mind.
I dunno, I feel there’s more than enough sofubi out there that makes me sad when I have to look at it...
A lot of it is probably personal taste, and the fact that I've mostly looked at brighter or more over-the-top toys. I don't really go for Pushead's stuff for example, but I can see that in his work for sure. Recs for sad toys always welcome though; I still have a ton to learn.
@xSuicide Squadx Amazing pic, as always!! I love your so-food-bi series. It's an killer piece on its own, but combined with some great candy, it's top notch!
@spatula007 Thanks, Tim! I love doin’ these shots, especially now that I have proper lighting methods for ‘em!
Here is the one off Dennis made for the Bombastic Plastic Show Here is the first Giant Kumon in North America, If not the first one sold? A one off for Bombastic plastic
I can't believe that the regular size in classic blue has already been flipped. It's been what, a few days at most since the emails went out? Do people not have any appreciation at all for toys anymore? Seriously, if anyone has the biggun in the blue and just isn't feeling it, raising my hand here sheepishly for whatever that is worth, before it ends up on some resale location.
