But isn't this exactly what the "art world" is based off of. Speculation and hype.

“Art world” in quotations, yes. Actual art, I’d say hard no.

And I’m Philadelphian, so hoagies are almost always on my mind….

also, these things we collect are an artform, but they are toys first and foremost. At least that’s how I see it.

Shit like this irks me personally and comes off so pretentious and dismissive ‘cause it removes any ability to just have a fuckin’ conversation. We’re all peers engaged in great dialogue here and points on all sides are worth listening to when no one’s cutting throats or getting personal.

I like this American term. Can someone please explain how the word douche became so prevalent in America? I must have been in my late 20s even 30s before I knew what douche meant, both figuratively and technically, yet always heard the term. Is douching a thing in the states? And douche canoe:mrgreen: now that one really floats the boat. … keeping on thread anyone know a toy that may resemble a douche canoe to help me understand. Artistic or literal.

I have no idea, but if a person, particularly a man, acts like an asshole, Americans call them a douche. I feel like the phrase was a lottt more prevalent in the late 2000’s though. How the canoe came to be, your guess is as good as mine, but it just sounds right.

I was a roller derby official and everyone was told Rule #1 was "don't be a douche." It's stuck with me.

Art or toy.. it really only matters to you.. the person who owns it.

Just make sure if any of you see my wife, please use the phrase “collectible piece of art”. ;)

Any learned craft or form of skill used to create idea or express feelings or thoughts is art.

That said the word art has taken on an ugly connotation for me over the years. Working at Stranger Factory and seeing how people use the word “artist” to excuse self centered and appalling behavior made me hate the idea of being viewed or called as such.
Collecting these toys for years watching people up their prices and excuse their behavior while trying to cultivate a pyramid of people to hold their ego up all in the name of “art” is gross.
I get uncomfortable when people say things like “hey your art is cool.” I 1) don’t take compliments well at all and 2) the word and the ethos attached to it have just gotten warped and sullied for me over the years and I don’t like being attached to it.

    I Make Toys.

I make toys that I don’t raise the prices on.
I make toys that I sell to people I know appreciate them in the way I do.
I make toys because I want to play with and collect them.

I don’t see my stock rising and instantly see an opportunity to raise prices.
I don’t use this as a vessel for my ego.
I don’t feel the need to make people feel small because my “art collection” is bigger than there’s.

Hirotas praise versus what he does is laughable.
He has let his hubris run rough shot on what he makes.
He’s not alone. The shallow end of the ego pool is cramped full of people these days.

Toys are meant to be fun and played with. I have an 8 year old kid that’s a regular collector. He’s the best. His mom brings him by and he sees what I’m working on and leaves with a toy every once and awhile. I love that. I love it more than anyone calling me an artist. I love knowing that kid plays with those toys.

    I'll leave this here:
    Oxford Languages definition of art:
the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

After a year of deep meditation in the caves of Tibet, surrounded by the screams of the ancient and wise yeti, I reached enlightenment and decended to bring you "toy art".

    ART or TOY ?
Steve was my Drawing II teacher in college in the early 90s. He was a very good teacher, a league better than most art teachers I had had, and a weirdly funny, intimidating, inscrutable* guy. I have often lightly marveled at the fact that even at that time (unbeknownst to me and several years before I would begin my own adult monster-collecting era), he was voraciously collecting Japanese toys and displaying/thinking of them as art.

*Caveat: I was stoned 24/7 during that time of my life.
