No reason whatsoever

Took a couple of fancy guys outside yesterday--Anraku Ansaku Public Hazard Cadmium, and the new (and final) Alien Hunter DX.

I'm very happy with some of these shots and less happy with others--you can probably tell which. The dense silver flake on Public Hazard is really tough to capture, and I probably needed softer lighting conditions for that one. Part of the problem is a lot of the filters I use will increase local contrast to make the photo 'pop', and that tends to make toys like this look messier. Still, I think the beauty of this release still comes through somewhat.

Alien Hunter DX photographs nicely, but there are some beautiful layered metallic reds around the arms that I don't think will come out without proper editing, maybe controlled lighting. Hell, I couldn't even see them until I took the toy outside. Photography success or no, I'm glad I got to see more facets of these toys and appreciate them more as a result. It's why I keep doing this

Cloudy/overcast days are the best! Sunny days are made for struggling with high contrast.

 

I picked up this Kumon earlier in the year, but took my sweet time photographing it.

I didn't realize there were already so many versions of the MaxToy figure. I love the one I picked up recently. The wax lips are hilarious.

just a random grouping while I was sorting out some shelves.

 

Wow, we don't have a Toysbian thread. It makes sense given the lack of US releases, but I'm surprised given the company's output. So here's Space Pioneer, release #2, coming hot on the heels of the first release from January of this year. I think the palette of the first run is more my speed overall, but this one has kind of a Buzz Lightyear vibe (bright green & purple) which I dig as a major Toy Story kid.

The vinyl on this one is excellent and, to my eyes, indistinguishable from better Japanese pulls. Thick vinyl, very pliable, no smell after a few minutes outside its shipping box. The satellite dish and sword accessories feel like rubber, very springy and solid with no residue or staining. You'll be thankful for the squishy vinyl if you mess around with the accessories, as it's easy to pull off the dome and realign the head if you knock it out of place. My one issue with the materials is the clear vinyl, which would elevate this to brilliance if it was totally glassy. It falls just short, and some very minor overspray on the sides doesn't help. The dome also make it tougher to get sharp photographs of this guy, as you can see by my abuse of film grain effects to cover up some iffy camera focus.

He's almost immaculate in the paint department, with even gold and purple sprays on the inner body, thick metallic silver coats on the outside and handpainted details throughout. There is a little messiness in these hand-painted areas; the red bands on mine's arms for example bleed over in a couple of places. Overall, a very fun toy with a unique design that I'd easily recommend, provided you can swallow the $310-350 price tag. I know, I know, awful.

Finally, one thing to note if you're going for one of these (or Toysbian in general) is that there's a wide variety of stickers which all lend pretty different affects to the toy, and the selection is random. I got a combination I totally wasn't expecting, but it's really grown on me.

Went to Chicago over the weekend. Between seeing my partner's family, some of my own family in Indiana, and some old friends, I didn't have time for the pilgrimage to Roto or any similar spots. But I did bring a travel buddy!
