What happens when you run out of space?

I’d like to do something like that, but my collection resides on the third floor of my 110 year old house- so there are two flights of tiny stairs with tight corners and low ceilings. I’m limited to only what will physically fit up the stairs... I hat being said, I may end up going with custom risers if I can fit another row of fighters on each shelf.

I went with the BILLY / MORLIDEN combo from IKEA for a large portion of my collection. About a 1cm slit between the doors does allow for dust to get in, but the accumulation is very slow. I dust my open shelves every 2-3 months or so. By contrast, I'll only dust what's inside my bookshelves every 3-4 years and find whatever built up inside isn't much.

The sliding door cabinets are probably well worth it if you simply want to avoid dusting indefinitely.

@hellopike Third floor certainly does present a problem. Would it be too out of the realm to take the case(s) up in parts and assemble them in the room? Your fighter collection sounds like it could benefit heavily from Toby’s suggestion!

Any brands you're considering for the cases? I've thought about setting up a dust-proof display for some toys but the amount of choice out there overwhelms me.

I don’t have any brand names. I haven’t seriously entertained the idea.

As for getting stuff up the stairs @xSuicide Squadx, that’s typically how I do it. Fortunately the detolf just clears the ceiling in the staircase when I stand it up after sliding it up, so the 3 I moved with didn’t have to come apart.

I am starting to grapple with this issue myself. I could certainly hang some wall shelves but my wife is also reaching her maximum capacity for my grown man baby doll collection. I don't see myself stopping so I'm considering doing a rotating collection. I think it will be fun to switch things up a couple times a year and take toys in and out of storage and let them see the light of day.

I used to be of the school of thought that if it wasn't displayed then it had to go. I have since switched over to the rotating collection approach. Now my storage bins, and my display cases are full and I don't know what I am going to do. Haha.

A long time ago I went on a shopping spree for most of a year. Once I decided to shrink my collection, I found it really hard until I made an arbitrary game that I completed in one afternoon: Keep/Sell/I Don't Know. IDK was then split into keep and sell. Boom, half of my collection in the sell pile in one afternoon. Put them all up for sale on ebay or Instagram immediately, before I come to my senses. As things sell, delete pictures of said item.

Of course, the cycle continues, and I may consider another drastic sell-off in the future, but I've been doing OK managing the mass of my overall collection.

I used to feel that I would only buy and never sell. And then life happened and it made that decision for me. You’re in a nice spot where there’s already a box to put your boxes in. It’s just a matter of which boxes you can cram up in there.

I’ve had to move continents so many times and the dollys can’t always travel with me. So now I have storage for them across the globe and who knows when I’ll get to see them.

I ask myself if it’s really what I want after having purged a few times already. I have no answer still.

I don’t think there’s a satisfying answer, since part of this hobby is getting dollies into every nook of your space. Dunno, I always have a hard time purging and then I’m amazed how quickly I forget the toys I’ve let go.

    Best of luck!

Just to put it out there- I just said I’m *running* out of space. Not that I have run out of space. I don’t want my situation to stop anyone who might want to send me free toys. ;)

that being said, ultimately after talking about it with a friend (@wingnut0 actually) via FaceTime if I move some hanging art around and find a new spot for some guitar cases, I could probably squeeze in one last detolf when the time comes. After that, it will probably be time to sell stuff on the edges of my core collection, and possibly do a collection rotation.

I'm at the point where i have x amount of display space in my house. If it can not fit in that given area, maybe its time to swap something out and find a new home for a couple pieces that dont mean too much to me anymore.

Same, and I've been ignoring it and just accumulating stuff, end up with boxes full of stuff in the garage and storage. And with baby 2 coming soon, we have been trying to do a deep clean and organize the studio and collection which is just resulting in more stuff that was spilling over being packed up. Going to need to do a big sale here.

Literally, after posting this i realized i have a box full of toys that arent on display and need a new home. Going to have to do a sale soon cuz a toy in a box serves no purpose.

I’ve already done this so much, that, when the eventual time comes again it’s goin’ to be way, way harder to let go of just about anything. Spatially, this hobby is so unsustainable for most!
