My wife collected Turtle figurines before we met. I said, "F THAT" I will get you real live breathing Turtles! That was 5 years ago. So the little turtles grew up and made love and produced three clutches of eggs. The first two clutches we brought inside and tried to incubate. They grew mold and failed. A couple of days ago my 4.5lb. Chihuahua tore ass through the yard after a grackle black bird. The bird flew and "Maple" kept F'n in the area the bird was. My Wife went to show the little dog that it was just a leaf, and voila! View this post on Instagram View this post on Instagram View this post on Instagram That's an egg tooth! We named her Tuga like Tortuga.
...amazing! My uncle LOVES turtles. Loves 'em. So do i. Fond child-hood memories of picking up half-dead turtles on the Australian roads, and nursing them back to life... Only bad part? The smell!! Dear god the smell!
Next year mofo's, next year... (actually I would never do this because it is abuse) What are the odds of THIS story popping up in my local paper the day after I post my first turtle story on SB? ....oooweeeooo http://www.statesman.com/news/entertain ... ood/nZwzY/
Congrats. I thought I'd share a few turtle/tortoise pix/stories since you brought this up. First, we were on the west coast of Florida about 2 weeks ago at a relative's house, and out of the woods wandered a larger Gopher tortoise! These are an endangered species in Florida, and if discovered, their presence often halts construction until they can be relocated. This particular specimen was quite large and healthy (except for some ticks on it - quite shocking to see). It moved quite quickly. It wandered around a bit, eating grass, until it eventually went back in the woods. I got some great shots and video too. Then my local reptile store recently acquired this beaut - a 2-headed turtle (Slider?). They have a history of getting unique animals, and also have a 2-headed snake in-house (also pictured below).
...that turtle race video... Dear god! All i can say is, what ever happened to classic pub sports like gut-barging + dwarf tossing?
Word is two headed turtles have trouble in the wild because they cannot pull their head into the shell for protection. A two headed Rattlesnake would give me pause. Dwarve tossing sounds hard on the back. I think I am going to bum rush that event and rescue all the turtles.
