So who saw Shin Ultraman last night? I really enjoyed it, it was like five Ultraman episodes with an episode of Evangelion mixed in at the end. I really liked the choices they made with redesigning the characters and the effects impressed me.
Sounds amazing, and so good to hear these positive reviews coming in. I am really excited, and of course quite jealous of these US-screenings, but really glad everyone is enjoying it. If your synopsis is anything to go by, Roger, this is exactly living up to my expectations, and going to be a blast! PS - it is currently playing in Odeon cinemas London, Liverpool, and Cardiff, for any UK SBers near those locations and some select Vue cinemas (mostly in London)
Edit: fudge, I just noticed that, if you are in the UK at least, it seems the screenings are an 'event' only, and thus only for a limited time. It is only showing on the 11th and 12th (and in those very few selected areas I mentioned). Dagnabbit.
Can anybody tell me if it’s appropriate for my 4 1/2 year old? I’d love to take him tonight. He’s seen his share of Ultraman and a bunch of other monster stuff!
Some of the themes could be a little scary for a 4.5 year old but I wouldn't say it's totally overwhelming. If he's watched the series before, I'd honestly say he'd be fine...but I'm not you so who knows.
There's a joke in there about taking upskirt photos, and some ass-smacking, and a gore-less dead body that has a couple of scenes. I don't remember any swearing. It has the pacing of Shin Godzilla, though, and a lot of talking, so the parts without kaiju battles may seem boring to a five year old.
@rattanicus I think he'll be fine. The mild inappropriate stuff will go right over a five year olds head. Im sure he'll enjoy it. I myself loved it, and am so glad we got a chance to see it in theaters stateside. A lot of kind of deep cuts to the 66 series, in terms of shots and lines.
A lot of the musical cues sounded like they could have been from the original also. I highly enjoyed that.
Really gutted I could not catch this here. I even tried the closest city to me where this was playing, on a hope I could maybe get there, but it looks like they've even cancelled it now. I wish they had organised more showings. I will have to wait for a home video version (but would love to have experienced Anno's vision cinematically).
Was a blast! Perfectly self-aware and silly with a great mixed use of effect styles. Absolutely loved the character design as well. Spoiler Was cracking up at Zarab with the duster LOL
Was playing about 45 mins away from me so my son and I went to see it last night. Loved it and had a great time. So many nods to the original that caused me to smile many times throughout the movie. For example... Spoiler Got a huge kick out of the design for Gomess. So great.
Gonna just have to get the Blu-Ray, a couple brews, a jumbo popcorn and enjoy it in your own living room! Nothin wrong with that. Heck now that Shin Gojira is out on media, you could do a back to back showing.
I literally leaned over to my wife when they first showed it and said "They better be selling that cuz we're gonna need one"
I truly enjoyed this last night. I went in with very little expectations. Happy time. Felt like a more uplifting "Big Man Japan". Rat- I think the most difficult part for a tiny fella, would be the longish zones with no Ultraman... and lots of adult joke- dialog/banter.
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Loved the call backs to the series. Especially the opening title sequence from the TV show getting a modern interpretation. Having gone in with no forehand knowledge it was enjoyable to see all the different styles used. My only gripe was choice of camera angles on some of the shots with the cast during the forementioned dialogue heavy scenes. Some of those sort of took me out of it for a moment. But overall very happy to be able to enjoy it on the big screen.
Fwiw fo those who missed in the theater and don't want to wait for the blu-ray/streaming, there is a torrent of the movie available with subtitles. PM if you want details. I've pretty much given up on watching anything on the big screen, so I saw this a couple months ago and enjoyed it. I liked how Ultraman was so alien. I also really liked the callbacks to Ultra Q, which is still my favorite Ultra series. Didn't quite match up to Shin Godzilla for me. But I'm excited that we will get a Kamen Rider film eventually.
Sad that I couldn’t go, I got called in to work Little man totally forgot that I even mentioned it, so the loss is only mine!
Just came across this fantastic original ad material for the first Bandai '83 line of Ultra kaiju. Such excitement and childhood glee. Bonus points for an appearance by King Goji for all the Toho fans out there. View this post on Instagram
