    That is a good point.
But getting special treatment to buy extremely rare toys to paint over probably doesn't sit too well with a lot of people.

Getting special treatment shouldn't sit well with anyone...whether they want the toy or not.

    i understand this....

and i am grateful for any special treatment whether real or perceived that I receive from S7 or any other seller.

but I am not going to apologize for painting this toy. I worked hard on it and I love the way it turned out.

It happens, it's a fact of life. It doesn't bother me when it's over something trivial like toys - it only bothers me when it's done on a grand scale and affects matters of importance.
I don't begrudge Data the one-offs he gets from Mori - but I think LASH & others would form a lynch mob if they found out he acetoned one of those so he could paint it.

No - at least not for me. I think Kirkland's is way better anyway.
I thought that Koji's was the custom from the Ojo show? Was it a commissioned one made off one of the clears released to the public? :?

you shouldn't apologize, but for me it's sorta like ordering a pizza and them running out of sausages. The order before me orders a sausage pizza and decides to take off the sausages and put it in a bag so they can feed their dog. so then i go "doh!.. i really wanted a pizza with sausages"

    something like that.

I consider myself an artist and a writer, but I don't state it publicly very often. especially as a writer, no formal success means you're a wannabe to many others.

I like to paint toys and have been doing the "paint & strip" bit for a couple of years.

As to buying customs- After awhile collecting both Western and Eastern toys, I grew bored with myself. I found myself re-selling toys to buy newer ones that caught my interest. I am somewhat regretful about this development.
But I never want to sell the customs I've bought. I feel a more personal connection to the individual art piece, and the thought of ever selling it in the future disappears. There are production pieces I don't want to sell either, but the temptation sometimes lingers.

(LASH, I PM'd you about a custom awhile ago. If you're too busy or don't want to paint for me let me know. This flesh M1 Woo wants to be in your hands.)

no one should apologize for painting a toy, or painting a toy and selling it. i do both all the time.

if this is the first toy you've painted, don't expect to get anything more than the value of the toy. once you have a small body of work then maybe you can charge more for your work. just a general rule of thumb.

People are avoiding the question again. There was a question posted by whthalo basically asking:
If someone like Koji or Bwana had done this how would you feel? Even better...what if it was someone that was not part of the Gargamel crew like say Mori, or Sunguts. I'm pretty sure a lot of you guys wouldn't bring out the noose. Why would that be any different from this instance?

Because he was a member first, then artist so in many peoples eyes thats all he will ever be. Thus if a member paints something rather than an artist its destruction.

At least thats what I have gathered over the years.

I buy, strip, & paint/dye whatever I want. That being said, I don't have the funds or resources, (or desire)to paint over anything too rare. I like all my customs, so I'm only about 50% concerned with what other folks think of 'em. Anyways, I'm really looking forward to the Clear Zags getting here. I personally think it's great that customisers aren't having to "ruin" production figures.

    To pose another question:
What about other people's customs? I'm not talking about "big names," but has anyone ever stripped somebody else's custom to repaint?

I didn't bring out the taser (let's at least be 21st century) for toybot even after stumbling across his Ojo custom cause at least he didn't colourize it and then throw it up in BST. That would have been completely over the top in my mind.

I accept that people can do whatever they want with what they buy. People can also buy rare toys and absent mindedly make them worse (cigarette smoke, falling off shelves and chipping, dog using it as a chew toy etc etc). Same thing really.

I still like the clear over the painted ones and fortunately I'm not gunning for a clear anymore these days. So torch the rest of them out there for all I care.

Only that which I own, may be colourized, otherwise sell it to me.
How's that for a bitter elitist statement?

hahaha. this is an interesting question....

i'm sure I would be wtf? but this is not exactly the same situation.

what bothers me is this re-occuring notion that by painting a figure and therefore supposedly "destroying it", the toy world is somehow worse off.

    I don't agree.

my position is that by having PK paint my GID Pirate, Koji paint my Silver Smogun and humbly, to a lesser extent, me painting this Ojo, the toy world is better off.

touching on what whthalo brought up, What I do find interesting is that sometimes certain folks on this board are selective in their criticism of these "tragic acts" of customization of perceived rare figures. For some customizers / artists, there is no offense at all. for others, its get the lynch mob ready.

that's ok, i'm happy and encouraged to have this healthy level of debate on our forum. That's what boards are for, right? :D

i'll refrain from posting my custom GID Silver Skullwing until the mob has recessed.....

    I have a question.

For the kaiju invades NYC I painted a unpainted GID ryusei and an unpainted yellow matango. Booth where regular releases, and not meant for repaint.

Was what I did any worse than me take any other ryusei or matango and acetoning them ??
