yeah, i've got at least 6 Devilmans painted over from various customizers.

at the time, it was the least expensive way to customize an Evil.....

customize that devil squid, then stick it out your pants and put it in a cup of ice cream in your freezer.

then I'll tell you it sucks and to go fuck yourself.

I rescued one Devilman from the clutches of the opposition during that difficult period in 2006...so I did my part...

One question that I've wondered is when did people get the idea to do customs or paint toys?

I remember growing up on robots and godzilla..then onto to starwars, gijoe, heman etc. Then there was a huge gap until about a few years ago when I discovered some of the new things being produced.

So anyway did the idea to paint on toys occur in last 5 years or so? I just dont really remember it in the 80s and 90s.

    Custom
    adjective
made or done to order for a particular customer : a custom guitar.

    Some paint-overs are not customs.

it's all PK's fault. ONe of the first times I was exposed to Japanese vinyl was his solo show at S7 3 years ago?

standing there with moco admiring a skullwing that PK painted for moto and thinking what the hell is that thing? it's awesome! and overpriced...!

I think customizing or kitbashing has always been around- I recall that Yokoyama's original Maschinen Krieger pieces were built off of other production models initially. Recently, it's become more pronounced on production toys (rather than model kits alone), probably because of the general boom in adult toy collecting and the greater availability of 'high-quality' toys. Before that, people probably didn't customize toys much because they were considered to be for children, whereas adult fans built resin or ABS plastic models. And I certainly would have never thought to customize my toys when I was a kid, beyond an odd decal or two.

    Just my speculation anyhow.

    +1 to that kirkland !

I painted western but it wasn't until I saw his work that I was instantly addicted with eastern toys.

Interesting. I was wondering if it was because of the type of designer vinyl being produced..whether it is western or eastern.

Prior to 2000 it seems like a lot of toys that Ive collected had a history or stories and a certain mythology to them. Almost like..you wouldnt think of painting on it because thats not what the character is supposed to look like...
But in the past 6 years or so there have been toys that come out without that background to them. They are just here and because they come out in several different colors I was wondering if somehow people started to think..Oh that'd be cool to paint it this way or that way.

It could be just due to the recent surge in designer vinyl and art toys. Prior to around 2000, I didn't know of anyone that collected western or eastern vinyl period.

As for characters that have had a history or story, I think a lot of customs are intended to tweak the appearance of a toy (i.e., the face mold or coloration) so that it better matches the TV show or artwork appearance.

But I guess I'm speaking more of plastic toys, rather than most of the vinyl that we collect here. And it's like apples and oranges, really. I haven't really seen much customization of even the semi-older Marmit and M1Go toys, beyond KaijuZoo's stuff, which is curious. Part of me wonders whether certain Western platform toys might be to credit for people's inspiration to customize newer, non-storied Japanese vinyl toys... ;)

Man, I could not even get through the whole thread, but like everyone else, have to add my 2 cents.

    1. If you are offering your own customs for sale, especially if you aren't established, why not put it in the Customs thread? If it's good, people will come to you to buy it for sure. I'm not saying the established people are better or worse, but we know Paul and LASH are here because they love the toys, not just for the dough. New people, we aren't so sure of.

    2. How can anyone not understand why people get pissed about painting over production pieces? I'm torn on this myself because when I see a PK Bemon or a LASH Real Head, I am in awe. But listen, especially you hacks out there - there is only 25 - 50 of most of this stuff. You painting on it means one less person gets one. Anyone happy that this makes their collection rarer is a douche. Anyone who thinks most people are happier that there is one less Booska Real Head but that the world is gifted with their "art" is also a douche.

    3. I'm no flag waver, but liquidsky's rant kind of disturbed me. I don't see how race or nationality enter into this at all. I'm half laughing as I type this, but...

    4. rhinomilk, you should really get into stand up. Best posts ever.

I just started... I made a shitty Magman (well some thought it was shitty, I liked it), and I just did this Smogun... After being ridiculed for stripping a production piece, I ordered some SOLID pieces... I wanted to paint Japanese vinyl for years, but I was always do busy doing western customs, I never got a chance... So I decided to pick up an airbrush and try my hand at it... I really like it, but it's threads like this that can be quite discouraging...

    My opinion on "Kaiju customs":

People need to blaze up their mighty hearths and get sculpting and casting damit.

Learn to sculpt hydrocephalic pinhead monkey freaks with one nut tied behind your back. ;)

    Now that's good!!!! 8)

    to expand on another thread:

well... i agree, you can do whatever the hell you want with it, and I know it won't leave your collection regardless. but i also have the right to weep in my own home

    some examples (for me, personally):

    glow pirate
    clear red pirate
    any rebel ink
    glow ghost fighter
    any ojo rojo
any damnedron or pharaos (before the milky whites and reissues were coming out)
