I think the only way I'll end up having to worry about it is if I do a full back piece. Everytime I see the earhart pieces in full coverage I start to think about it. I've been debating if I can keep up with old school stuff now because I have this urge now to just do large cohesive new school stuff, and not sure how to mesh the two (ie one sleeve old one new).
Just an extension of the backpiece . . . lots of windbars and waves, more of the rock that the Tiger's stood on, a Peony on one cheek and a turtle on the other . . . it sounds kinda messed up but it works as an overall design . . . down to just above the knee joint. Beats the traditional British hunting scene with the fox diving into his burrow . . .
Sounds cool. I'm thinking the ol' "Dogs Playing Poker" scene on my butt. That way if I moon someone it's both a mooning and performance art.
From the man that brought you the KVP "Robot using Stephen Hawkins as a microphone spittin' binary code in progress... http://twitpic.com/ot872"
totally. i'm such a scawny person that i could possibly fit one of those dudes on my arm, but i would have to rotate my arm a complete 360 just to get it all in 1 view. that kanegon looks fantastic!
The History Of American Tattooing DVD a.k.a. Sailor Jerry documentary just dropped. http://www.horismokumovie.com/
Its worth a rental, no real revelations if you already know the story, but the interviews are good and interesting.
My arms are filled with a mish mosh of old school junk already...I am getting fat, maybe I'll get some room on my belly!
Dude, If had a body suit like Lyle Tuttle I would be the WINNER of this thread! That old school shit is off the hook, off the chain, and disconnected it is so effing sick. Could be the b&w photo's... If you are new to tattooing I would highly recommend watching this movie. These guys are Jedi Knights.
I have quite a few sailor jerry books, some of the editing of the film left a bit to be desired and a few other things annoyed me, but as I said, its worth watching, and I agree if you don't know much about old school/sailor jerry/ed hardy/etc etc its good. There's an ed hardy documentary coming out soon also (I forget what it is called). I used to be all about old school stuff but now I'm hooked on the new school stuff and scrapped plans my old school sleeve. I guess its time I actually post a picture, elbow start of sleeve.
Why not? We already get the Ed Hardy wine and Ed Hardy incense. My girl and I were jabbering about that 'sell out' thing and she made the point that if anyone was gonna do it it might as well be the King of tattoos. I mean can you imagine if there was a show with a girl who can barely tattoo and everyone held that up as the standard of the industry? oh wait.... What do people say about yer guys toy tattoos? just basic "WTF's"? I love it. Hidden in plain site... Audio was that in one sitting? That is a lot of 'ditch' work. I had my ditch split open and it was layered on over 3 sessions.
I've seen a few tattoo blogs kind of do posts "in defense" of ed hardy. The whole thing is so far out of hand now, but when it comes down to it, he's still amazing, and american tattooing wouldn't be what it is today without him.
Totally missed this earlier. One sitting of about 14 hours, probably 12+ hours of work, I'd say there was a good 6+ hours in the ditch, most of the shop though the artist and I were crazy for the placement. The old man sold his name to that man like ten years ago. I wonder if knew it would take such a turn. I am every interested in seeing the movie as I've read the American tattoo master book several times. Does it touch on his racist banter at all?
The sailor jerry doc? It doesn't really go too much into negatives from what I recall and I know not to the extent that I've read in some books. At one point the movie just kind of "shows" his list of reasons to get a tattoo and doesn't give you time to read them, so you miss the fun homophobic references. lol
yeah, he didn't like Japanese. More Nationalist than racist. (well prolly racist too) They bombed the shit out of he and his fellow shipmates. It is really as much a documentary on old Hawaii as Jerry. I loved it but I have been hearing about all these guys for years. " I wouldn't trade one Sailor Jerry for 1000 black t-shirt kids "---Rollo Banks ( I couldn't sit for 12 hours even with a intravenous demerol. ) What were YOU on?
