What a great interview! (when they let Jon talk a bit at least). Thought the conversation about customs and respect was super interesting. I agree with (what I think) Jon was saying there that this is likely less a East/West cultural issue but more centered on individual creators' sense of pride and ownership over their work. I imagine it can feel quite invasive if someone is trying to profit off of your creative product. I've certainly represented creatives suing over a way less egregious encroachment on their works in my past life.

Tangentially, I had no idea this was such a scary place. Also weird that they kept referring to SB in the past tense... I haven't been here that long, since about '12, but is this the second iteration of the boards?

It was a good interview. Jon, if you're reading this, they kept piping in my questions because I was the only one asking them at that point. ;p

I need to watch it again to see the Skullbrain references. I mentioned it in the chat but the comment wasn't put on screen. It was just about how if you do a really bad custom it will end up on the fugly thread.

Ha! Thanks for watching Roger. Yeah, there’s a much much broader ‘designer’ audience watching Clutter’s online endeavors, so likely many of them were in the dark when the conversation went as far back as ‘08~’11. Anyway, I’m sure I’d edit some of the dialogue if it hadn’t been live, but i tried to keep it as factual as I could morally muster

I thought that was the most interesting part. After three decades plus of people from different countries making and selling vinyl toys of every variety, the history of how different groups developed different areas of the hobby hasn't been well-documented.

I really did like the analogy that you and Josh settled on regarding the term "sofubi" - one is Champagne, the rest is sparkling wine.

Oh, and the story about Ilanena getting squeamish about the custom painted Woo, a completely Ilanenaish moment that I was totally picturing in my head as you told it. I hope he resurfaces one day.

I posted a bit of a follow up to the livestream on my blog. Mostly some thoughts about critique and professionalism.

i'm sure quite a few of us could screenshot your professionalism comments under many posts...
interview was good though regardless of the few jabs.

If you have 2 nickels to rub together, or the funds to try your hand in this sofvi/sofubi realm, fall flat on your face, and still be financially stable... still a risk, sure one is greater than the other. The courage to try is greater than the courage to not, because fear of failure.

artists/creators... If you want to try your hand at this craft and you feel confident in your sculpt... Do it. no better time than now, as who know what lies tomorrow. Dream big, if you fall get back up. as long as its your passion you are fulfilling, there's no wrong in that. sure it might end up on the ugliest toys thread. but that's making it in a way itself lol.

    Fair enough on all accounts.

No secret that I let fly with my own brand of humor/critique on occasion - often in the act of making light of things that are too often taken too seriously - or things that are just blatantly humorous.

Also, in no uncertain way did I state that ideas that feel valid, novel or otherwise unique are what might very well make a new maker into a well respected or appreciated maker. There’s always the risk of failure. NOBODY has ever hit a home run with every single effort.
