Can anyone recommend some software that automatically downloads your Flickr photos set by set? I tried Photo Grabbr a while ago which worked OK but I didn't get round to doing the back-up. Tried it today and it cant save a lot of my images for some unknown reason (probably because the site has had such a big overhaul). I would like to do a back-up of all my photos before cancelling my pro account. I'm thinking of saying fuck-you to Flickr and finding an alternative.
So this morning I tried searching for "alternatives to flickr", "free picture sites" etc etc. Surprisingly very few came up at all. In fact of the few sites that came up but most are no longer functional or have been closed for years. Wonder is Yahoo bought up a lot of these to limit competition? I want to say the internet is still a vast a free market and this will only lead to people making sites to cater to users unhappy with Flickr's new layout, but I'm not that naive anymore. Seems giants have basically moved in and anything unique has been quickly squashed in favor of of profit or looking like a tablet (I hate when any desktop version is dismissed in favor of a sleek mobile device look). I'm so oldschool that I still refuse to view anything on my ipad in a mobile view (ipad was given to me as a b-day gift before you say why did you bother getting one!) EDIT: Also you know what I loved about flickr? I know a lot of you guys/gals on flickr also, and it was fun to see all the comments made on pictures. Seems like this new giant ass scroll will make me overlook pictures and miss them altogether.
I loved sharing with you all but it the new site is a nightmare. Someone should get fired! If a good alternative is found please post. Otherwise it might be time to build a few wordpress pages for photos.
That's what drew me to flickr as many SBers have an account and we can really enjoy what people are sharing around this ultra specialized hobby. If people start leaving flickr like Moog hints at, flickr will loose a lot of appeal to me. Too bad there's no serious alternative (for the moment ?).
I couldn't agree more. Personally, I only used flickr for toy photos, and checking out the new posts from people on Skullbrain made it a daily routine for me, same as coming to this place. And it was invaluable as a resource for referencing other figures, and the various databases of great toys and info being maintained by folks like Chimply and Moog. And the vintage stuff on there was a definite soft spot for me. Sure people post photos here, but you are never going to post them all, and that's why flickr was great - a great place to check out more about a certain figure if you wanted to.
Someone posted this interesting comment on the flickr forum ; "The Terabyte is a LIE. See, here’s the thing. If you’re a free user, you only get 300mb of uploads a MONTH. To use that 1TB on the free account will take you about 280 YEARS UPLOADING 300MB A MONTH. Thanks for nothing, Yahoo."
I can't even grab my share links anymore. Like, I can see the "more ways to share" icon below my photo, but when I click it, the share box with all the links in it doesn't appear. Awesome.
Yeah just uploading pics and trying to find the right page to add tags was really annoying. Gotta make it complicated, can't keep it simple. Thanks multi billion dollar Yahoo!
I seem to be able to see the pics from your photostream at least Rob. As far as accessing one's own, I am still learning my way around the new format, but I think I can change stuff as before.
Most of everything seems to be there. But just moved around or hidden as a icon. Ugh. If you hit the edit button it brings the owner to classic view but still with that top banner. This view is only for the owner though so he can edit. D'oh! I can't find the option to add notes right on to the photo. What a mess. Feels more like Google image search. Blah.
I am in the same boat here, have a page error and photos never load, but if a click on the edit button i can see pics right away.
Added it the moment you announced the feature. Thanks again by the way! Sorry to see the numbskulls at Yahoo! have downgraded yet another of their acquisitions.
yours looks amazing in the new format. i know i was going to try colored backdrops when i get back to america, but now i definitely have to go black backdrops forever.
That's actually my new desktop wallpaper I like having my old photos back at least, but everything else is too complicated
Tell you what Rob, I'll copy and send you back the pics, and you can send me the toys! Black background kicks ass, I agree. I think it would also look great if you could find a nice black mirrored surface to use to stand them on. Oh man, this flickr situation just keeps on getting better, direct quote from Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer: Remove foot at any time.
By her logic, there's really no such thing as a professional cook or chef any more, since so many people cook at home. Aside from her foot-in-mouth denial of professional photography, the implication that Flickr Pro was primarily intended for professional photographers is just inane.
