It always makes me laugh when people say this about the goga. This is like saying the Bemon is beautiful and refined. I love goga but the sculpt is actually pretty poor.
I think the goga sculpt is awesome in the same respect I think punk rock is awesome. Unrefined, rough around the edges, not quite ready for the mainstream but packed to the gills w/ underground flava.
Meh, Michaelangelo's "David" is all proportional and refined and stuff. At least they dust it every coupla hundred years.
I think there should be a distinction between how it looks and saying that the "sculpt" is great. The goga looks rad and does indeed have a rather unique, textured, "rough" appearance. But the sculpt itself definitely has its issues. The tail particularly doesn't fit into the body very well...if too much of the flashing (or whatever the extra vinyl flange stuff is called) is cut away or becomes brittle and chips off, the tail can fall out. Also, the head, arms, and legs all have articulation but it's pretty limited and not exactly smooth. Finally the poor guy stands kind of awkwardly, pitching forward somewhat. Thus there is kind of a divide between the great aesthetics and the technical nature of the sculpt.
I disagree. The sculpt was done by Atelier G-1 and I think it very accurately captures the feel of the animated character. Sometimes the "flavor" of a design can be lost when translating a 2d design into 3 dimensions, but I think this sculpt pulls it off really well. Accurate, but still "cartoonish" enough. I know some have raised the issue of the tail joint before, but I feel like that's more of a technical issue rather than a problem with the aesthetics of the sculpt. I can't see how the sculpt could really be improved based on the design of the character and the style of the original artist. Just my 2 cents. p.s. Bemon is fugly.
What the? Bastard! I think what needs to be clarified is simply whether comments are referring to the sculpt itself or the technical/design of this figure. I think most would agree that the sculpt itself, in terms of how this figure looks, is fantastic. And much like Turtletooth has already said, very successful in portraying this character in 3D. The design however does have its issues.
Excellent points about making distinctions. My own admiration of the Goga was based on how it looks in photos, not owning one or seeing one up close enough to be very familiar. A visual impression is not the same thing as good engineering. I like the oddness of the huge head, but again, that's not the same thing as a figure that stands well or has well-finessed points of articulation.
I agree with a few of these points as well. The "sculpt" itself is really cool, and like you mentioned TT it is a great match to the animations that anraku has done about goga. I also agree that the head is a bit awkward and large and does cause them to pitch forward. He also looks a little funny with his tiny legs too. I have a few of them now and they're all excellent figures, but as you mention z there are a couple of things (the tail and head) that i think could be improved a little. Personally, i'd like to maybe see one with the head style of the mini..it's not so pronounced, but a little more round. I love my mini...hell I love all of my anraku As for the drama about price, price is whatever the consumer sets it to be. he put it up for $225 and someone was willing to pay it. Personally, my anraku collection is priceless to me and i wouldn't know what value to put on it although I have a general idea. What a great dialogue that has come out of this...better than the hemming and hawing that seems to go on here so much lately.
Z explained it perfectly. I am talking about the sculpt not the figure. I guess I use the term "sculpt" when referring to the "technical" aspects of a figure. The punk rock analogy works pretty good with the goga: you can make great music without being a great musician (of course the inverse is also true). I do love goga (and bemon).

I think Z and I were posting at the same time. Those are all good points, but like I said I think those are technical issues, not problems with the appearence of the sculpt. Alot of the issues mentioned might also vary depending on the type of vinyl used (clear being much softer), and who does the trimming of the parts. I only have the one Goga to base my opinion on, but I'm glad that mine doesn't seem to suffer from the loose tail, bad stance issues. I love that we're seriously debating the artistic merit of a retarded dinosaur toy.
turtle, the one you have seems to be put together better than most. The solid vinyl ones also have the same issues. The need to send goga to gargamel to have all the joints redone.
