Chris certainly had taken many excellent photos! I was specifically thinking about the Butanohana Album called "Buta database dump"
    https://www.flickr.com/photos/lixx/albums/72157681389825542

These photos are what "powers" the buta database in the Japan Toys section. There are 209 photos here, a lot, but not impossible to "backup"

This is shitty news. I actually just uploaded photos to flickr this week, first time in ages - predominantly for the reason that its status has been so uncertain. I don't want to waste efforts on something that is going to disappear; but as has been said before, there is still no decent alternative.

But much more concerning is the historical and archive stuff of incredible photo documentation. Lixx, Moog, Scobot - all have graced us with massive tomes of information and delight housed on flickr. Without these, it is going to be a much shittier place. :( I don't know, maybe they will turn this around, surely there must be loads of people (not just toy nerds) upset by this. Especially folks who have shelled out money to company over the years to keep their stuff. Mismanaged BS man, they have such an opportunity here, and instead are just killing it.

I wonder if S7 would consider hosting our photos?

Probably best for us all to download copies of the albums we know of, so plenty of backups are available. Then the account owners can decide where to reupload things. I'm not sure what should be done with respect to Lixx' photos, may he rest in peace.

I've been pro for years so mine should'nt be going anywhere (unless they delete them by mistake, which wouldn't surprise me) and I have most backed up. All the Revenge Retro Adverts thread is on Imgur, so if Imgur goes down, that thread is fucked (I also have most of that backed up too, so I could start again).

Regarding Chris's Flickr, if I can find the shareware software to batch download like I've used in the past, I can start backing up his photos on monday at work. If a few other SB'ers do the same we should never lose his awesome collection photos.

    @Mr. Humphreys

OK, i have backed up all Chris's photos of toys in the multiple folders, including the two Buta folders of course.

One thing, whether it was done on purpose or his camera was on a certain setting, a lot of his earlier photos are around 500px wide (which is acceptable but not very big). Once you get past a certain date they are a much larger pixel size. I assume some of the images in the 'Buta database dump' folder were screen caps or saved from the internet?, because some of those are fairly small as well.

Amazing, thank you so much for your efforts, Moog! It is greatly appreciated by the community at large here. As far as quality goes, it's not such a big concern - anything at this point is better than nothing. I can also say I also have used a lot of low res images here, as I have been consistently limited to an old point-and-shoot camera (and still am) which is about a tenth of the quality of the average phones even these days.

No problemo, there was no way i was letting his awesome collection shots get deleted. That would of been a major waste. His toy photos total about 806.6 MB, i didn't download any of his other folders, just the ones containing toy photos.

If anyone would like to keep them on back up as well - please PM me your email address and i can send a download link for a zipped file via pCloud transfer. If you just want a specific album(s) let me know.

    Viva Lixx / Beautification Syndrome!!

    EDIT*
Actually i've just had a thought, he might of had a bunch of stuff not in any albums but on his main stream. I will have a look at backing those up as well.

Is anyone in direct contact with Chris/Lixx family? Do you know if they are aware the majority of his photos may be deleted by Flickr soon?

Out of the 5,000+ photos on his account about half are non-toy related. I've got everything backed up for now, so if they want them backed up on their computer at home, somebody PM me their email and I can send a download link.

    Cheers.

Throwing an idea out there, and you'll forgive me if the logistics are not spelled out at this moment. From what I understand, the annual membership fee is $50. This buys you - I think - unlimited storage and photos. Well, I was initially thinking we might just all chip in to support Chris' account on there. But this got me thinking.

Would it not, at least in theory, be possible to have a 'Skullbrain' flickr account? I mean, if the storage is actually unlimited, than hosting all toy photos for the entire site should be possible. We could all then have 'albums' within this account. I realise of course that not everyone would be into this, and it doesn't give you bragging rights, etc., over a certain account/association as such (but really, anyone who cares about that thing will be over on Instagram or whatever platform). This would merely be a library of toy photos, documentation, etc., for anyone who wants to contribute. A more community-organised effort, for those who remember what that is. Granted, you would in theory be giving others (who take part) access to your photo libraries, but I think all of the preceding discussion has brought to light how that was sort of always the case anyways.

    Anyhow, random thoughts.

^^ That's an interesting idea, worth thinking about. The only problem I can think of is - there would be overlap sometimes when multiple people try to log in at the same time. I assume if two users from two different countries try to log in with the same name/password at the same time, one will get bumped. You would have to keep coming back to see if the other user has logged off.

Other than that, someone would have to take responsibility for payment every year. Also, I'm not sure if Flickr would flag up multiple people from different countries logging in regularly from different computers as a security issue or not.

Still, your idea certainly is a possibility.

Totally valid concerns, Moog. As I said, I would have no idea if this would even work. And I do think that both of those things you mentioned might cause some issues. But hey, if it did work, would at least provide maybe some option. I dunno how many 'users' here would actually be interested, but if there were a good number of us, the cost per person would be minimal (but yes, someone would have to accept certain responsibility as 'admin'). Heck, if there was enough members interested, we could even do separate accounts for vintage, etc. But that wouldn't even really be necessary as such, if everything is truly unlimited.

^^^Great idea Stevie! I like the idea of having separate accounts for various sections! That might cut down on the traffic of logins and clashes, as well as keep photos organized into their proper sections. You can count me in as a contributor, especially for a Buta account!

p.s. I don't have Chris's sister's contact info, but it would be a good idea to send her an alert, so she's in the know!

p.p.s. I also wish there was a way to display Chris's collection in a "museum" of sorts, so that we could all go and visit and enjoy his collection. He had wonderful taste in toys, and his collection is very diverse, spanning both vintage and modern. I love how colorful everything is, and that he really liked "TOY" toys, not just status symbols. You could see by how finicky and organized he was, just how much joy those toys brought to him. We miss you Mr. Grumpy!

it's unlimited storage. To get the 30% discount you need to click on the "learn more" grey bar on the bottom and scroll down a little. If you try to get the pro account by going through the normal section of selecting settings and account it will not give you the discount.

Well, I'm definitely willing to upgrade my account and host the buta and tiger 7 photos :), but just wondering if there is a better "group solution" ?

Thoughts and suggestions on who will Administer and organize (i.e. set up albums) the account, and will it be a global or admin-only login?

Not saying the S7 would be game, but a lot of forums that I've been a part of have dedicated photo hosts, and Brian and the gang must use somebody to warehouse all of those pretty shop and blog listing. 'Praps we can get them to kick their neglected appendage some love?

I sent an e-mail to Chris's sister re: the flickr situation. If I recall, she has access to his account. I also offered to pay the fee to upgrade his account to pro, at least for the next year so they have more time to decide on whether they want to download the photos and close it or (hopefully) keep it open.

His sister went ahead and upgraded the account to Pro on her own. She appreciated the note about the upcoming change at flickr, as she had not seen the notice.
