I’m of the opinion that while some (even most) of the painted Bemon are cool, nonsense paint jobs like this get a free pass *because* it’s Bemon.

yet somehow the more I look at it, the more it grows on me... not to the point to pay 3K.
It probably blends perfectly in any collection seing it has a bit of every possible color :D

@hellopike For me, I guess it’s not so much that it gets the pass, but paved the way for anyone else *trying* to get the pass. And as @Urk mentioned I do believe the sculpt is the majority beneficiary for such paint jobs. I can’t point out any painters that have attempted something quite like what Bemon does/is known for, let alone doing it well. There are toys like Blood Guts Toys’ Toxi/Flesh Eaters and Splurrt’s Met Death Golem that I believe would lend themselves nicely to this style. Even some early Longneck Yusei Majin looked similar.

Not surprised by the varying responses to this, and I mostly agree with what's been said - both for and against. Personally, I really like this one (but would never pay anywhere close to four figures for it). The largely uniform, grid-like spacing of multi-color marks reminds me a bit of Damien Hirst (who I don't particularly care for), but with the rough mark-making style of another artist who I can't quite place.

As someone who is much more into hard-edge, clean lines, purposeful and well-rendered art, I find Bemon to be a masterful example of the opposite end of the visual spectrum. Crude naivete generally turns me off, but something about Honda-san's work somehow conveys purpose in its chaos, a thought and plan that's been executed rather than merely throwing paint at the wall.

I hate to mix art with toys - but couldn't help it in this case.

^ Reminded me a bit of some of Harmony Korine's work. Like this edition:

I don’t think it does, since there’s opinions that aren’t into it at all.

I wouldn’t even say it gets a pass from me as a collector, not that my overall opinion means shit as a whole. I guess it’s more that Bemon paints capture my interest as it’s presented, whereas with other toys it might not. @---NT--- I had to Google his name and art. I generally scoff at what’s considered ‘fine art’ for reasons that just come off as angry and incomprehensible, so I won’t delve. What I found looked like a mixture of paintball shots and chewed gum pressed against a canvas, which the Kougai sort of looks like chewed gum itself. So I can see the correlation. @C E I personally can’t stand a single thing about Harmony Korine as a human being, but that’s a pretty on - the - nose visual comparison.

Ha - interesting! I was actually thinking of another set of works, which is totally different than the ones you mentioned. I guess his career has spanned quite a range of works, and I should have been more specific...or maybe not, since you found other works that connect to the Bemon! But it's these works that the color placement first drew to mind (and yeah, best not to get drawn into a discussion on the merits - or lack thereof - of Hirst's works):

Please don't take this wrong, but when I first saw it, I thought, "oh no! some apprentice picked up a blank from Gotosan's work bench, to use as a pre-paint test surface, and didn't realize what it was, until Mr. Gotosan came in and chased him out of the studio with a broom!"
   ;)

...cmon, you know you were thinking the same thing! :D

@Mr. Humphreys If I didn’t already know what I was lookin’ at, I can admit I’d probably have somethin’ of a similar reaction! I’m not at all against anyone that can’t help but pick it apart. I get it! There’s plenty currently out there that I think is absolutely asinine and unworthy of the praise it gets; but I get the Bemon Kougai on my own level and these wild releases resonate with me!

Side note: I am LOVIN’ how much discussion is happenin’ here. :o

Ha! Robert, I'm just taking a friendly jab at you ;). I wouldn't criticize anyone for their taste in toys, everyone has their likes and dislikes :). That being said, my Korean sis-in-law for the most part thinks my collection is mainly "those ugly things", I told her there is both good and BAD toys/art! Tried to convince her that a wall full of Butas is good, vs. some of the photos of toys I showed her in the Fugly topic, but she said that there are varying degrees of ugly ;)

We definitely need more good jabbering on the boards! It's way too quiet here. So if a lot of neato discussions are going on in convos, please share if you can

p.s. @xSuicide Squadx do you think that Bemon is related to the series posted by rudebeast on page 53?

@C E - Great photos, love those classic Marusan kaiju colors on that variant.

I enjoy seeing the photos of all the Kougai with the gonzo sprays (even the odd uggo), especially with so many wild one-offs popping up lately. There have been more than a few that just do nothing for me but perhaps speak to others as a specific character or vintage tribute. I am interested in the discussion, but really anything that gets more garish clown Kougai captured with Robert's excellent lens is a win for me. I personally tend to go for the mucky, swampy-looking goblins:

@xSuicide Squadx - I keep going back to look at photos of that red vinyl sample paint example though, oof.

^^^ now that's awesome. almost like a evolution of the process in the first pic. So much more into all 3 of these versus the one we shall no longer speak of.

@Mr. Humphreys Friendly jabs indeed, Grace! I’m just enjoyin’ the discussion, even if some are disgusted. ;) Fantastic recalling of the poster on page 52! The Kougai that’s gotten some feathers ruffled here is actually on the far right of the second row! Lookin’ at that poster now, it’s great to see so many wild, yet similar patterns amongst that particular series. And Bemon’s reuse of the Bullmark poster aesthetic is awesome as always!

@deafmetal Mark, that trio of yours is indeed mucky and swampy lookin’! Even more awesome after reading Mike point out the evolutionary look of your shot! I do have to say, though. That one Kougai you linked to that does nothin’ for you, also does nothin’ for me. Now *that one* I thought was a custom the first time I saw it. But the garishly colored one I brought here today, as well as the ones pointed out in the page 52 poster, just hit an unknown Mark in their own right for me. However, that painted red sample...OOF. The Kougai of ALL Kougai to my specific and particular tastes!!!

Controversy is great for conversation! I wonder if Morley would've liked sofubi?
on a side note (no comment on bemons implied), your comment about ruffled feathers reminded me of this 60 minutes story a long time ago...

highly controversial when first aired in 1993
...just had to giggle at the rich ladies sniggering during the auction
    Heck! a $3K Bemon is a bargain! :)
p.s. staring at that poster, i think more is better than one, visually speaking (dare I say, Warholish?). A different perspective perhaps? I think personally, that volcano red and gold one that nico000 posted on p.58 is nice (towering inferno of erupting lava feel, from that camera angle)

We need to have a proper topic in the Japan toy section for Bemon with all this official pictures.
I like to see people taking pictures of their Bemons (Robert's ones for exemple) but we need to have a mook for these sofubis.

Glad you picked up on it, it's even dark blue vinyl just like the OG Marusan. That and the fact I really wanted a Kougai that looked like actual toxic sludge made me grab this one when it popped up. Run size of 15. I believe it was sold by Honda on Japan Yahoo Auctions in 2017. Can't wait to display this along a matching Pegira - OG or Bullmark reprint.

I attach a few more pics of it here as I didn't post one of its back. With silver sprays (as if mimicking mercury/quicksilver or melted zinc) running down its back:

As I'm weak for plant monsters or plant inspired paint apps I absolutely love the swampy Bemons you @deafmetal posted too. Would definitely pick up one similar to any of those if the stars aligned. Those or if there ever was one with an arctic/snowy theme - for instance in the style of Blobpus' Aurora Northern Lights, Ice Drift, or Poisonous Blizzard paint apps.

This one’s kind of a broken record, since it’s the only Kougai I own, I’m always learning new shit with shooting and editing. So I redo a lot. Plus, @zindabad got that bad ass Kougai recently, and it inspired me to shoot this again. But the black and red is one of my favorite color combinations.

Thank you, @gatiio! I’m a contrast freak in my edits, so the black sprays really came out nicely without feeling like I overdid it. This sculpt is just brilliant. Every time I look over it I marvel at how random the textures seem, but somehow I just *know* each and every crevice is intentional. I’ll never get over the first time I saw one in hand. It was a gift for a good friend, and looking it over, I could practically feel my pupils dilate over the smoke stacks on the top of the head and the sewage ducts on the back. Like, all of THIS came from a simple header card illustration, that not shows from the shoulders up. Simply awesome.

Prince Jose, who is part of the Japanese satanic trap rappers Blasphemy Boys(soak that in), and also partially responsible for printing Honda’s clothing, just posted this Space Monster. GID vinyl base, and a rather interesting choice of colors and layout.

Nice paint job on that lil guy.

As a side note: Trap rappers make sofubi now as well? I guess being a tattoo artist isn’t the only boat folk are jumping from, hehehe. Blasphemy Boys is a kicker of a name for a group tho

I was wondering if this was an official release.
I remember the mixed part figures had GID parts but never saw any GID painted one.
