Took a shot at The Ritual last night.
I liked it. Towards the end actually getting glimpses of the beast. Man it was intense. Whomever came up with that must of had a good time.

@eckotyper @Mecha The slowburn in "The Ritual" building to the final reveal was a great thing to see. It made for a fun viewing experience that I'm happy to hear others are amped on too.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer is now available via Prime. My cheap ass waited to watch it since I know that all A24 flicks eventually go Prime, and I can say unequivocally it was worth the wait. I guess it's a tad of a stretch to call it a "horror" movie but then again maybe not. I kept being reminded of The Shining while i watched it, not because of any similarities in story, but rather because of the score and shot selections. If you're unfamiliar with the director the movie might not work for you, but I knew what to expect going in and it is easily my favorite of his. Will be watching again.

Watched the live action Japanese zombie flick “I Am a Hero” last night (well almost, I haven’t been able to finish it yet), and those may be some the creepiest full on “infected” makeup jobs I think I’ve seen to date. I caught myself with that “stay away” anxiety multiple times , and felt silly as hell for it. :D It’s the faces, and those eyes! There’s definitely some gore to the look, but with each main facial makeup shown, the focus seems to be more about pushing unsettling elements (somewhat similar to those nag rips that you can’t look at @hellointerloper). Each fully infected character features slightly different facial mutations from the next too , so it’s a fresh look with each one you see, keeping the intensity up.

Looking forward to finishing it sometime soon.

Loved that one. It reminded me of that Twilight Zone episode with the kid who was all powerful and everyone had to do everything he said or die.

@Lttr Prssd @Waterbear ahh! What am I missing? Usually an ending isn't make or break for me but the ending of the Killing of a Sacred Deer was so unsatisfying it ruined the movie for me. This movie ruled up until that point. I especially loved the score for it. I think an all out clusterfuck of carnage would have made me love it.

    Well...

Basically the entire movie is based on Euripides’s Iphigenia in Aulis in which Agamemnon and his men are stranded by the God Artemis so they can't set sail for Troy so he has to sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia because he had killed a scared deer. There are tons of hints dropped during the movie explaining the connections but you have to be a bit of a greek mythology nerd to pick up on most of them. In essence the kid is a God and lives his life based off the ancient rules so you can't defy him or hurt him or kill him or stop him. Remember when near the end Kidman is kissing his feet while he's tied up? That was when she realized what was going on. It's kind of funny actually because just yesterday I was watching that new Troy show on netflix and they used that exact story with Agamemnon being forced to slit his own daughter's throat because the Goddess demanded it.

@Waterbear I did know that stuff but the way you explained actually helped. Ha! Thanks! Maybe a rewatch is in order.

No problem! I loved the movie. I think it works even without the references to mythology just because it's so fucking weird and filmed so well. It's creepy no matter what and it's fun to hate that little punk ass kid and the Dad too. So effective to tell such an ancient story and just change the setting but that's it.

I almost wish I didn't know the myth cuz i like it when stuff happens in movies without explanation. Not that it's explained per se, but making the connection between the movie and the myth you can accept it a little easier. I kinda wanna be all, "Why/how can this freaky kid make all this happen?" But not have it explained. It just is!
The ending is a bummer because the audience wants retribution, but I guess that's kinda the point, eh?

Gave it a watch last night and (having dodged the spoiler) that's exactly where my head was at. Even having no answer of how that damn kid did what he did, still thoroughly enjoyed. Film was ominous and unsettling in all the right ways.

I really try not to read viewer reviews, especially on IMDb, but I saw a couple that mentioned the acting, and I'm glad to see it didn't bother anybody here. I think the stilted delivery, most notably from Collin Farrell, can really throw people off. That opening dialogue about the watches had me chuckling. It's pretty much the same in The Lobster so I was pleasantly surprised to see it again here.

I'm a big fan of Cronenberg and Lynch so I actually enjoy that kind of delivery. It really ratchets the weirdness factor way up. It also makes the "realistic" reactions stand out more and feel more meaningful. I can't remember the specific instances but there were a few places where the dialogue had me laughing too. I would imagine that was on purpose.

A Quiet Place was great. The minimal explanation of what occurred in the world makes whatever is happening during
the present time feel futile. The monster design was great but as always, the CGI takes away from it. At a running time
of 95 min, it felt brief. I felt that was due to the minimal vocal interactions between the family so it placed more emphasis
on action or more specifically movement in general. Anyone that is even remotely interested should watch it in a theatre,
home viewing would lessen the overall impact.

We watched The Vault over the weekend on Netflix. It was kinda underwhelming, but not horrible. It's not everyday you watch a haunted vault bank-heist flick with James Franco. A bunch of the film is during the day though, so you can see what's going on. The ghost makeup was pretty cool too.

    ....but overall, not really recommended.

A Quiet Place was a major no go for me. If anyone is interested to know why I'll rip it to shreds in a spoiler tag.
