Re: TKOM / Takahiro Komuro Sculptures Ended up seeing one a bit after on IG. Thank you! I'm more of a fan of the body than the head. Could always fix that... maybe more blank releases will happen in the future.
woww the bottom one is my favorite, but a Shig one off would be pretty insane, I am just a sucker for yellow
For those interested in learning more about TkoM's Demogorgon piece, I wrote a feature on the history of this piece that can be read here: https://coartmag.com/news/feature/tkom-takahiro-komuro-demogorgon/ I hope you enjoy!
Great article Nick! The book is so COOL! View this post on Instagram TkoM is my favorite artist. At a glance his work can seem toony but his sculpting style and the colors that he use have a unique twist that just pushes his work from toy level into the art level. He is truly Amazing ! I hope his next new sofubi release will be the "Mushussu" View this post on Instagram View this post on Instagram
Thanks on both counts! The book took me a wee bit to design, but I'm glad it's enjoyed. I completely agree. And he's one of my favorites as well, though I've not yet had luck acquiring one of his pieces. One day! I love that piece as well, especially the truly D&D feel of its design. I mean, that's basically a Beholder used for the body, though made to look even more fierce than the original.
TkoM has announced that the sculpt of Doublethink sofubi produced by Toy Art Gallery is officially retired... I love TkoM art. Thank you TkoM for the awesome Doublethink sofubi sculpt! and Toy Art Gallery for producing it. I look forward to future projects by TkoM.

Once I clear some shelf space I'm opening this ugly mother fucker up! I really love how this particular version has an almost frost bitten appearance. This is my very first TKOM piece to.
Dude, congratulations! The more I look at just your photo, the more hidden depth there is to the piece. Must be even more rewarding to really explore in-hand.

2 and 3 look like they'd pair great together, as do 4 and 5. It is interesting to see his paint go in phases like this. They are all great, intricate, paint schemes.
I am a TkoM lover, Absolutely fascinated by his art style. I am also a die hard fan of the Japanese SD style, so the unique SDish? art style of TkoM immediately caught my intention. Demogorgon is one of my favorite sculpts. Although he is the prince of demons, His skull seems to be the size of a baby and his eyes are so small and almost innocent. because of these designs, even though he is a demon, the sculpt looks more cute than frightening. The image below may be taking my point too far but when I first fell in love with demogorgon, I was thinking about why his head was so cute and realized that his skull reminded me of innocent heads of baby dolls, with baby cheeks. okay. maybe not. His head may be cute but those fangs and the unique TkoM sculpting stlye scorpion neck totally takes this figure into the creative world in his head. for my personal taste, I like the color of the 1st regular release demogorgon the most. View this post on Instagram the light blue paint on the milky sofubi body is just magical. on top of that the black gums with purple tongue coming out of his stomach pays homage to the rolling stones and also gives this little dude a bad ass feel. the paint on the snake is just perfect. the gold skin, blue gums light blue eyes and pink venom sliva is just mind boggling. the green scorpion tail arm color connects to the neck giving a feel that the head is actually the head of a scorpion that is living in the blue fury body and hiding many legs inside, and the tail is sticking out as if it is an arm. the eye on the back, the scorpion shell on the back of his head, devil hoofs, diablo horns... the red eyes are the cherry on top. all in all, every detail of the demogorgon is well thought out missing nothing. It can be said that first sofubi release color of demogorgon is similar to one of the original fiber glass demogorgon sculptures.. but I like the sofubi color so much more. When I first came into the sofubi world there was a lot of gamaotokos released(up to #5) but only one demogorgon released, and I was so jealous of people who owned one. with the help of skullbrain, I was finally able to track #1 down. I am eternally greatful to that member.
I've been curious about TkoM's process for a while now and wondered if anyone here could shed light on it. Does he handle the plywood, fiberglass and sofubi sculpts separately or is there a relationship between the three? For example I've noticed that the sofubi toys have different proportions and pack more detail than any of the larger sculptures, but the general form is of course very similar. Does he produce the masters for the sofubi from scratch, or is there digital scanning, downscaling and modification involved? In sofubi specifically, does he sculpt, pull and paint or are other people involved at different steps? Not to start a whole digital/manual sculpting thing here or otherwise take a shot. I just love learning about the process behind the toys we collect, and found it remarkable that TkoM works across such different media.
On this week's episode of 'Taimur gushes over a new toy,' it's Gamaotoko #9! I absolutely didn't expect to win this but threw my hat in anyway because it's my favourite paintjob released so far. I suppose the colours stole my attention in the preview photos, because there are so many details on the sculpt in-hand that I just didn't expect. The texture of the skin, sort of folded and scaly but also treading that line where it could be lumps and ridges in a liquid--which it might be, considering it's meant to be a monster born out of sewage. The sheer amount of layered texture on it, from the folds in its eyelids to the smooth lines of the nails and hair, totally blows me away. And a couple of lighthearted touches make this a real winner for me, like the fact that one of its ears is placed where you'd expect--but it's a trick! Because the other is floating in the middle of the arm. I love how it looks with its arms out too. Anyway, photos. This first one is 'me when I need a hug,' and you'll find detail shots under the cut. Spoiler: More photos
Beautiful version! Congrats on the score—definitely one of my favorite sculpts from the past several years.
