in the chart above, i propose the following changes to better fit what's been discussed on here previously: mummyish -> invisible man rock-ish -> mummy crystal-ish -> golemn
+1 sir. But people are gonna see what they want so I'm not arguing. I just know I'm right MUAWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! On the "Luke Post" on KK the way I read it was that the other heads are all based on the Vampire and the Frankenstein but not necessarily vampires and frankensteins themselves. I think part of the fun is identifying them but without a strict guide. I hope he just makes more heads down the road, these are open for more. "Creature" heads (which could easily be made from the vampire I'd think) or skull heads or a devils. Pumpkinhead?!
^^I would love to see more bodies too, even though it would add to the mayhem and hoarding! but I really fuckin wanna see a body and arms to match the "invisible man" heads texture. Would be soo killer.
Haha, just saw that a few minutes ago. Made me go into my Flickr and change all my "kaiju" tags to "sofubi." ^_^ Oh, and your videos have been super incredible to see by the way. So good!!
Hahaha, had to put him in JoeMan! Love the 'Kid! And you're right EBIII, all in all, they are "toys".
I still don't get all the hype on Grody. Let me ask all the people who collect Grody, Nag, S7 platform toys, do you really collect Japanese toys aka Kaiju? Or is this just a transition thing from KR toys? I think I'm in asshole mode today.
The second a toy gets positive reviews does that instantly make it "hyped" and there for not cool? How are these "hyped?" Where does "hype" differ from general enthusiasm, genuine positive feedback and overall excitement with the desire to talk about it? I get people getting weird over Nags, there are (5-6 total I'm sure, world wide) people dropping $1500+ on them. I get that. That's annoying. But the GS figures, I haven't even seen one flipped, any sold are at cost on the board, I've never seen one hit eBay or YJA (though I'm sure they could have) and the fast sell outs (I think) are due to people wanting more then 1 to trade since they're blind bagged. I think the word "hype" is all "hype." What's hard to believe about a group of people enjoying a toy with excitement? What's not to get?
Actually 2 Grodys were flipped on eBay a couple weeks back by someone most people here know and hate. And I just looked up these "d-unny" figures you guys talked about - They look great! I think I'll switch over to collecting those instead of this garbage!
I get what your saying Jeff. It's just to me it seems anyone can make anything anymore and people just jump on it. I'm a traditionalist guy so obviously this is not going to appeal to me. I just see this whole forum being less an less about traditional japanese monsters anymore and more like KR JR. Hey I just like to piss in cornflakes from time to time
I don't know, I like a lot of standard Kaiju toys, but there are also a lot of them that just don't appeal to me at all. I think when it comes to kaiju, the character is just about being big and menacing and smashing shit, which is cool, but it doesn't really have a great deal of charm to me. Of course there are characters who I might not find any thing charming about the nature of the them, but a sculpt is done just right and that toy not the character is charming. Like dustman, I love the crude toys, but the suited live action dustman has no appeal to me. Grody figures are just filled with charm, the expressions, the parts, the nature of being a mix and match toy and all the parts working together to build whatever outcast monster you like. Same with Nag, I think they're so ugly they're cute like a pug, and the expressions are just loaded with charm, maybe not the 2 faced nag, but the single face and 4-eyed.
I've seen some grodys get flipped, BIN on ebay 70 or 80 bucks, they get bought up pretty quick. Haven't seen any crazy shit, just 2 x retail so far.
I've felt that way for quite a while. But I like Grody Shogun and don't feel it's "KR Jr." in any way. Sure, I prefer M1go, but the "bang for the buck" you get from GS is pretty dang good. If they start creeping up in price I probably wouldn't buy them - I'd just admire 'em from afar (like I do with most things).
This board has never been JUST about traditional Japanese Kaiju. Look at the name, the board is named after a vinyl figure made to promote a fashion store. I mean it's MORE then that, but that's what it is at the root. SB wasn't just toys. They were part of a whole "lifestyle" type of shops like BxH. But since they used some methods/influences there was a lot of cross over collectors and the makers themselves had roots as kids in Kaiju but not ONLY Kaiju. RxH takes influence from TMNT and Star Wars all the time, in sculpts and paint. These are not that different to me. You can see the classic toy inspiration. You can see the passion the creator is putting into it, not just the toys but the distro of them. Trying to make them accessible w/o making them common. Surprise releases. Fun stuff.
Bang for the buck is truly awesome, as stated. Facial expressions on the figures are priceless, as stated. I love the color schemes/paint apps that Luke has chosen as well. I love the experimental feel. And I really love that, if you are willing to do your research and dedicate some time, they are very attainable. I love and collect vintage bullmarks, masudaya too. As well as Marmit, Shikaruna Koubo, RxH, Pushead, etc. This ain't no KR thing.
