^Can't call that one fugly, as Kikkake's sculpt and paintwork are impeccable as always, but it sure is unappealing. I'd like to see it caught in a trap, so it can't walk out.

I think Ron English is a phenomenal artist, but I’ve yet to like a single toy he’s produced. I don’t know why, but I can’t stand his 3D iterated designs into toys. I like the idea of his American Depress, conceptually, but the recycled trope of obese characters got old, really fast. That stupid dinosaur makes my eyes want to chug battery acid.

 

Wasn’t this toy supposed to be an ode to hardworking sofubi factory workers?
This is another one of those cases where things just don’t feel right. Not only is this an AWFUL paint job, but...he’s also not a cook?!? It doesn’t make sense but also comes off as kinda disrespectful. The people who cast and pull your sofubi aren’t clowns.

Exactly. Japanese vinyl toys are their own art form already, which a rich history and a particular aesthetic. It doesn't need to be reinvented!

Platform figure type group shows have been cooked for awhile.
When TAG used to do them so many people complained they were't invited. Then they were and buried and redesigned the fig beyond it's original scope. Then who was made out to be the bad guy for not being invited, and the fig not selling?

 

All of these look like they are on a ton of cocaine

 

those platform type shows were an excellent chance for some dream collaborations but there was always someone trying to do waaay too much lol

 

So what amazes me, as a person who has been known to paint a toy from time to time, is this: who the heck is buying these terribly painted toys? And I mean the decent toys that have been given the “kitchen sink” or rainbow vomit treatment? Is it all just overly enthusiastic new, colorblind collectors with more money than sense?


That, and I’m glad nothing I’ve ever painted has landed in this thread (to my knowledge).
