It's probably the least user friendly social site out there. I'm also a member of a podcast group (Club TWIT) on Discord and I find it to almost be seizure inducing because there is so many flashing gifs and notifications happening.

There’s no like button! How am I supposed to let people know I like the pictures they post??

What is this thread even about now? Annoying new technology? Not being able to find things on a website? The fact that old stuff we like isn’t made anymore??

We're all just going to end up meeting at Denny's and yelling about how great sofubi used to be.

Forum software isn’t hugely expensive and neither is hosting; unfortunately the format is out of vogue with people who want instant gratification in one place, social media hooks and the ability to be more visible (read show off, like, etc). I’ve ran a forum for over a decade and Facebook Groups were the first real ‘threat’ to forums because people wanted to be able to spend time on Fakebook AND dip in and out of their niche hobby. A decade later, at least 5-10 new members register a week… so there are people out there who don’t feel the need for a ‘connected’ hobby resource.

To my mind, there are two simple solutions:

    1) we all offer to pay a yearly contribution to keep this place running - wouldn’t have to be huge ($10-20) and would seem very fair. This could be done now or if the threat of closure looms it’s head. Personally, helping to keep it running now, by making a contribution, would be reasonable. No one is forced to pay but if you value what the site represents, you help by supporting it.

    2) If Super7 decide this forum is a drain (time and money), they could always offer to hand it over to a group of people willing to run and fund it. If it is on a shared server and they want it off, it can be moved. Write a stipulation in the transfer that says it can never be monetised or sold. This would mean Super7 doesn’t have the hassle but it stays non-commercial.

    Just my 2-cents

They seem to be doing really well with all the licenses. I kind of think they would have really sunk if they stuck to sofubi.

I think it's funny how this thread started about finding sofubi on the Super7 store and turned into the future of the BBS. The existential threat of this place disappearing some day is always on everyone's minds, myself included. One of these days I plan on going back and PDFing threads that have information that I consider valuable so they don't disappear if/when that happens. Maybe I can get someone to write a script that automates that.

The rise of corporate platforms like Facebook, Reddit, Discord, etc. was a classic case of "video killed the radio star" for BBSes like this one. I've talked to many collectors who are lurking here, most of them just reading without logging in to accounts.

I don't know about this place ever actually growing, though. It's not very accessible for people who primarily interact with the world through smartphones. Even if they sign up, I don't think new users get confirmed too frequently, due to the way the registration process has to be set up to keep out spammers.

Two new members here this year; nine last year.

    K
now someone’s been trying to get in here for years, no success. They gave up sending messages, trying to get approved; too much hassle.

Out of the eleven new people from last year and this year, as many as seven of those may have been approved due to me "greasing the wheels." I frequently mention Skullbrain to people and they often say something to the effect of, "I would like to participate there but I registered and never got approved."

If you know someone in this situation, and you have their username and/or email address, you can send a message to the moderators and they can approve the account.

The problem is (or was, at least when I was a moderator) that there are dozens of attempts by spam bots every day to create new accounts, so it's hard to figure out who the real ones are.

I had someone put in the good word for me, or I'd probably still be sending messages. :D

Not to Monday morning quarter back but couldn’t you have a couple of questions that had to be answered when you register that would show that it’s a person not a bot? I think I have to do this on some car forums I’ve joined and some Facebook groups as well.

I much prefer this traditional BBS. I'm in all sorts of groups on social media and I hardly ever have actual interaction with people. It's all likes, hearts, and 'can I swindle that from you's. I'd love to see this place grow in population or maybe expand to other formats.

If SB were to be in threat, I am fully confident that we'd be able to find a creative way to keep it exactly the same as it currently is, format-wise. Likely through a donation model if necessary. I may be very absent (other than sticking my nose out from the bushes whenever August / September come around), but I still care for this place and this community and would do whatever I can to keep it afloat.

Worst case scenario, if this place gets shut down without warning, is there some kind of a backup?

Yeah the host does regular backups that I believe exist for a month. I can look into it further.

I'd say having the Discord will still make a great addition maybe even a thumbtacked post referencing it would be great. Could be easier to get the Gen Z-Alphas to join in there for the future, Not that we want a lot of young rebel rousing around being new and untrustable lol ... but yeah I love the tradition format also, I check it regularly multiple times a day.

Is it weird that I like that this board is so antiquated? I feel like it keeps the fair-weather fans from coming in and ruining the vibe, but if someone is determined and really cares, they’ll get on board.. literally.

I share the sentiment that I don't know the first thing about discord. Sounds like another app I’d need to download.
