Horror Movies

Hatchet part 4 was pure awesome if you like super low budget comedy slasher gore. I enjoyed it just as much as part 1(which I loved)and more than any of the sequels. It was stupid funny and ridiculously bloody.

 

Just finished watching Let's Scare Jessica to Death and really, really liked it. I always thought I'd seen this one before. I think I conflated it in my mind with movies like The Haunting of Julia and others of that ilk. The title is misleading since it sounds like the main character is going to be gaslighted, and it can appear that way at times, but it's more akin to Messiah of Evil or The Nesting. Apparently there were a lot of strange suggestions made by the producers that ended up in the film and actually made it work! It's one of those movies that's a tad-off, but all the better for it. And the gal who plays the lead makes some weird acting choices that, again, help with the strangeness of the whole thing.

It inspired me to rewatch Messiah of Evil which is just an absolute wacky masterpiece.

The Nesting is available on Prime/Shudder. Weird little happenstance that one of the guys in it is also a poet, and I happened to publish him a while back when I was doing that sort of thing. Tripped out when I saw his name in the credits.

 

I looked up The Nesting. I live near that octagonal house where it was filmed.
Another reason I need to check this out.

The Ritual is on netflix now. I saw the first half yesterday and I really loved it. It's one of those turn the lights off and watch it loud type of movies. Well acted and beautifully filmed so the impact of the "scares" is heavy and meaningful. Again I am only halfway through so the entire thing might fall apart and be awful like so many other horror movies in the second half but so far I am all in with this brutal lost in the woods flick.

 

It doesn't fall apart per se, but it does kinda take a cliched turn. I enjoyed it overall. I'm pretty easy for the most part, and getting free "original" films from Netflix works for me.

When I first saw the trailer I thought it was a remake/reimagining of the Old Man horror flick Rituals, with Hal Holbrook and Lawrence Dane. There's a few similarities, but definitely not the same story.

 

I loved the second half too. It did change things up a bit but damn what a well done horror film from start to finish. It's not often that something can pass for a really good movie and a really good horror movie at the same time. The Ritual is a fantastic little gem in a genre that has more bad than good in it.

Best creature I've seen in a horror flick for years. When it stood up and prayed I legit had chills. Beautiful design. Almost like a mix of something from princess mononoke and a creature straight from hell.

If you are on the fence about checking it out watch the trailer. If you do want to watch the movie skip the trailer so you won't spoil anything.

 

The director was involved with Southbound, which is one of my favorite movies of the last five years, so he gets a lifetime pass from me. This definitely didn't hurt his track record.

 

I remember that one too. It was different shorts squeezed into a single movie right? Some of them were pretty great.

 

Yeah, a loosely tied together anthology. Not sure which part this guy directed, but I pretty much liked them all so it doesn't really matter.

The director did The Accident portion of Southbound. This was the middle story.

I need to check out Rituals.

 

Not my favorite part of Southbound, but it's brutal as heck.

 

Criterion's 4K remastered bluray of Night of the Living Dead is coming out tomorrow. Amazon has for it less than half price.

 

2nd ep dips a toe into Lynch territory. Pretty good stuff so far, but I also got a little tiny twinge of AHS feels which kinda irked me. May just be the subject matter.

 

Echoing positive comments upthread about 'I am not a serial killer', very good performance by Lloyd and overall a satisfying movie.
Also enjoyed 'My friend Dahmer'; fascinating and chilling in equal measure,

 

Super Dark Times on Netflix reminded me a little of I Am Not a Serial Killer.

Having never visited the States , I have always enjoyed films that show the grey rainy boring side of life over there..SDT had a 'Rivers Edge' kind of vibe location wise...love that movie btw.

 

I used to buy it every once in awhile back in the day. Then I got into Film Threat and crap like that. I dismissed horror for awhile, and then in the last five or six years my love and appreciation for the genre.was resurrected. To the point where I end up watching a bunch of crap these days.

 

Got dang if I haven't watched a bunch of shit in the last week or so. Someone offer up some good recommendations man!
