Fuck well known online collectors publically flipping toys and everyone turning a blind eye to it due to their reputation gaining them a free pass. In fact fuck so called collectors who champion being anti flippers liking such posts when they know damn well those prices are off. It’s not OK for a random from China to do it so why is it OK for “one of us” to? In for a penny in for a pound. This shit’ll never change anyway, I should get with the times and accept that the war on flippers is lost.

 

Tough subject. I can see where someone would want to recoup their costs for a toy... if they paid $600 for a popular $100 toy, they might put it up for $600 in an attempt to make back as much of their money as possible. If they bought directly from the artist for $100 and are trying to sell it for $600, then that to me is a flip.

 

Seeing people flush their principles down the toilet to make a big profit on these toys is always a punch in the guts. For some weird reason though it's making it easier to accept that the same thing is happening behind the scenes with this Covid shit.. schools being forced to re-open for billion dollar payouts, faulty medical equipment being sold in bulk just to make that cheddar.

 

Yeah of course I’m referring to those who have been keeping this up before the pandemic. To me flipping is an immediate turnaround of new releases.

@patrickvaz I’ve had a back and forth conundrum with this one. On one hand I understand how early supporters/close friends can come up [close to] every time, and I’ve never really raised an eyebrow to that one. Hell, if I was a maker and my friends were into my toys I’d definitely hook it up. However, lately, it gets pretty noticeable that avid hype beasts are beginning to win every major lotto, just because they have the deep pockets to *appear* like a super fan, when they’re just a super fan of appearances.

Yeah, there are a few brands that it seems a big chunk of the runs go to total newbies that bought their way into vet status somehow, which is just lame. Some of those people who rewind the clock 2-3 years ago were aware of the brand but chose not to collect until it blew up into the stratosphere. Maybe this is a little judgmental of me, but if your collection is only hype shit and you don't have some stuff that aftermarkets at retail if you're lucky, I'm gonna say you're maybe a bit less appreciative of the art and more into the bizarro popularity contest.

This was stated maybe a year(?) before I joined the boards, but well within my days of lurking before becoming a member. I still wasn’t quite up to snuff on a lot of things and how shit worked, especially in Japanese toy collecting. But when I saw this comeback all I could do was .

 

I mean if you only like 1 or 2 brands why would you want to buy something else? If your hearts not into “the art” what would be the point of that?
Like I wouldn’t buy that crab scratcher for a buck, so am I not into art and or Benscoter? No I love his paintings just don’t feel like everything need to be made into a toy.

 

Fuck my city/state for lifting restrictions this weekend.. it's like the weekend before Christmas out there. Queues out of every grocery store... not even going to bother picking anything up. I hate social distancing just as much as anyone else - probably moreso as I live alone and don't have any family that I speak to. It's annoying to see people throw the effort of the past 6 weeks out the window just because they can.. It may be an over-reaction but I would rather be a little lonely and stay home rather than go outside to hang with friends/get some instagram social life content and have my blood potentially turn into a super thickshake and have my lungs explode in a couple of weeks time. And fuck you if you live with a partner or family and still complain about being isolated.

 

Not trying to be a dickwad, but quarantining with a mental illness is one hell of a bad time. Depression is shitty, and not having regular contact with people means the "nobody but your parents like you" and "the world doesn't need you" thoughts come back. It's being around people (for me, going to college art courses) that keeps that crap at bay. It's like I constantly need reassurance that I can function like a normal human being.
Still, no matter how much I hate it, I'm not breaking stay-at-home orders. My mom had pneumonia 3 times in the past 5 years. COVID-19 could kill her. My estranged grandmother already died from it, and she was healthy aside from some arthritis and dementia.
The fact that everybody is relaxing just makes me worried as hell for the second wave... and worry is bad.
