If you know me, you know I'm a fan of Vinyl Junkies, Skull Vikings. A board member turned me on to one I missed (thanks Bubblegun) It's sitting in NY waiting to clear customs now . skull viking 'gid' Exclusive from BLObPUS, this is the awesome new Skull Viking glow in the dark release designed by BLObPUS's close friend and top toy designer Vinyl Junkies. Outstanding quality, and produced to a typically low run. Designed by Vinyl Junkies Produced to a limited run Glow in the dark Stands 17 cm tall
Yeah is a beauty- I dont have any of these guys- but the colours on this one make me wanna invest- I have no dough though. Beautiful colurs!
Wait, I thought these were out...like...a while ago. Or am I thinking of a different run? Translucent purple with gid vinyl swirled in? Painted by Blobpus?
This thread inspired me to take some pics of the Skull Viking I recently got. Love this fucking thing...but it DOES look fairly different from the one you have pictured. Weird. Anyway, it's translucent vinyl with gid swirled in....and the glow power is considerable. I gotta say...I'm very impressed with this toy. I've had the regular glowie for the longest time (straight gid vinyl with blue spray on one side...and orange on the other...I just saw one for sale here the other day). The regular one is okay, but it just does NOT do the sculpt justice. When I first saw the sculpt online, I just didn't appeal to me. The fight figure proportions are a bit too SD-ish and cartoony. I picked up the regular gid one anyway because I thought the clear helmet was kinda cool. When I saw the one above in person, however, I went nuts. The overall dark look really brings out the brilliance of the sculpt (certainly more so than the gid, as gid vinyl tends to lack visual contrast...so sculpt details get lost easily). If you look at this figure from *any* angle, it looks killer.
This is resurrecting some OLD, old shit, and I’ll only half apologize, and moderately, because I do have three figures pertaining to exactly this toy line. And I’m honestly quite surprised there isn’t much more talk of these figures in the boards, outside of shit talking( ) and wanted lists. The Screaming Pumpkins were all I was after, and found, but the Skull Zombi picked up for a friend was too good a version not to photograph. I love Halloween toys, and these being sculpted(by Cosmo Liquid as I’ve read) after the record sleeve for Misfits’ Halloween single, this dings all the right bells. I will say I LOVE the sculpt and details of the body, but the posture is a bit strange for display’s sake. Not much of a complaint, though. Hoping to eventually find the original orange head/black body Screaming Pumpkin!
They're fun toys. One of the first sofubi toys I ever bought, a decade ago or so, was the Skull Zombi. Seems like there's a solid catalog of releases too.
@612DudeCrew I definitely like the pair I have a lot. Despite the posture and body positioning to be an odd display, it’s super interesting to me for a toy that was made in early 2000’s. Pretty rad for these to be your entry into sofubi, too!
These offend my tasteful eyes! But what's with those colors! These sculpts are all a rippoff of.................. OOPS sorry wrong thread! (JK!) Great pics. I remember these. Total flashback!!!!!
@Paulkaiju Oh, I’m sure I could bring plenty here that’d be far more offensive to the eyes than these!!! Glad to see there’s still some appreciation for these, even if minimal. Though my appreciation is all new since this is the first time I’ve ever seen one in hand and not photos!
Great gifts from an awesome friend. First pair of Skull Vikings, and also the first time I’ve ever seen ‘em in person. The removable helmet for an exposed brain is an awesome design touch for an older toy.
Great pics Robert. I got to paint a Skull Viking once. I have no idea where it is but it was a great figure and one of those figs that "Paints itself". Blobpus toys always have the fondest memories for me. Kaji San is a true treasure and I hope to work with him again one day.
Oh I remember these! Man, digging up the old skull stuff a fond moment in sofubidom where every toy had doll eyes and it was a revelation to me. I never got to buy one and these feel nostalgic in a vengaboys-kinda-way, that is, never really out of style but their own style thanks for the necropost of sorts! (?)
@Paulkaiju Unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to attest to its artistry of lending itself to paints, but your word is certainly one I can take to heart without reserve! The paints on that purple are so striking and fantastic. The application is so solid and the colors are so brand new in appearance!!! I hope you’re able to dig up that Skull Viking you painted ‘cause I’d love to see what you did with it! @gatiio The Screaming Pumpkin I’d seen in hand once before, so getting those into my collection was a satisfying hunt! The Vikings, though. Wow. The heads are some bulbous and detailed! I certainly can say for the time period these come from, 2006 - 2007, and looking at them comparatively to other toys they stand out SO on their own. I’d say out of style to their peers, but never out of style with substance!
