I saw that one too. I can’t believe how high these are going for... I feel like the bootleggers are now making their “products” scarcer and more “exclusive”. So stupid. And the people who buy are just giving this asshole more power.
This thread is all sorts of whack. As if this whole stage of the hobby isn’t a bunch of people aping each other’s crap. Y’alls best bet is participate and hope that the community won’t screw itself over
Aping is completely different to bootlegging. Also, participate in what? Buying bootlegs or making bootlegs?
the whole of it. Bootlegging in itself serves a purpose of redistribution and access. Making bootlegs is an entry way to many and those few that do it to spite makers, are themselves contributing to the twists and turns of this hobby. What I see is that many don’t understand the mentality in China production areas where once something is made, it is out there to be copied and replicated. The better the quality and improvements to the original concepts, the better. Something that also cracks me up is those upset Bc their NNN or HxS dollies now need a provenance label to go along with it, and are often themselves the People that want to call these toys ‘art’ at every breadth pick a lane and take it as it is. That’s my take
Conversely, I'd not pay $40 even for a 'real' version first NagNagNag . . . other than for the obvious high $$$ instaflip! I don't care what kind of a person that makes me!
I see someone listed a bootleg MVH DX on eBay UK yesterday. Listed at £160 and had a single bid on it. Seemed to disappear last night so I assumed it had been reported but just spotted it’s been relisted with a clearer title at £130. Hopefully it gets pulled again. Listed as a one off high quality bootleg like that makes it okay.
Pics etc archived, they may take the listing down again ... iaintgettingonnoplane2015 (456 ) Sofubi Mutant Vinyl Hardcore Copy/Bootleg MVH Splurrt Please read. Everyone is mad now about these bootlegs, one day people will be spending good money on these I have a feeling. Look at guys like Brian, whose collection is so deep that he also has shelves of bootleg vintage toys. You never know. I’ll even admit I was tempted to buy something from this guy. It was a mixed part Ollie w/ a four eyed Nag head. He wanted way to much money for. I called him a boot legging fuck, he tried to justify it by saying it was a “one-off”, I laughed told him to forget it. The reason I wanted it, is because you’ll never see an official version of that piece, seeing how Shig doesn’t really care for @Rich .
Being disliked by Shig is a right of passage. He has issues with just about everyone at some point. That’s just how he rolls.
By no means was I saying you were special because Shig dislikes you, shit he probably dislikes me because I mentioned your name in my last post. I’m used to being disliked, I have a feeling you do also. #youremyboyblue
Its the way he says its a perfect copy in perfect condition ... If you had the original to compare to it side by side, I'm wondering how perfect it would look then.
Very different, because these bootlegging shits don’t have a proper “meat” marbling technique. It frankly looks like the white was painted on.
I wonder who in here is already making a bootleg Neo sofubi shelf? These are intriguing as ephemera of the hobby and nothing more and I’m sure those with pockets deep enough must already be working on a shelf. This is niche enough for that. I know I would if I could. Dunno how many Mexican bootlegs ive owned through the years and it’s the same shit as this. More classy, but still the same
Is it the same though? A lot of bootlegs/KO's are copying large toy companies products. Is it the same when you are copying niche artists? Surely it affects them more than a large corporation?
In the same thread of Mexican bootlegs, the only thing I can say is: The size of the frog is the size of the rock. If anything, the notoriety of having some nobody bootleg your toy will create in itself more avenues for people to buy/be exposed/create hype for the damn thing. Again, lets not forget that this hobby is already ultra-niche and with its current exposure into hypebeast lands, it is more likely that the bootleg will benefit the original more than making a longer lasting impact. And if what they are bootlegging is the tired and true skulls and pus and exes on the eyes, then they arent really bootlegging more than repeating the same crap we've been forced to see blow up for the last decade. Its not original to begin with. Now, if we as a community dont come together to call out these bootlegging scumbags and burn their enterprises ASAP, then thats on us and not on the artist for letting it slide and buying the knockoff. dont buy fake if youre not into it. But the same dumbass that pays for replica jordans is going to be the same dumbass that pays for replica MVH/NNN/HxS or whatever. iuno
I tend to agree it won’t harm the artists in this niche. The markets only viable for the bootlegger if the original artists are selling out isn’t it. But as a principal I can’t get involved in it. Having worked on kickstarter tech products tooled in China, only to see copies advertised on public transport and released even before the original has gone to market, really sucks I can tell you.
yup. Totally agree @Sophie_Sofvi I dont even want to think about this. The mid aughts and we all wanted to believe the future was now
?? Fair enough, but a lot of the time they're counterfeits and not charming 'pachi' KO's. Unfortunately, they end up on eBay being passed-off as originals, and unsuspecting collectors are suckered. Not all sellers disclose its a fake they're selling. Sure, if you know something is bootleg and you want it anyway, that's totally up to you, but it sucks when deceit is involved. I've got plenty of bootleg toys but I knew exactly what they were when I bought them.
No, they fulfilled maybe 100 orders as testers, and didn’t fulfill the rest of the orders. No refunds or any kind of action taken by Kickstarter. Millions was supposedly wasted in R&D with nothing to show. It’s why I’ll never support another Kickstarter, even for a toy or art project.
Something we say in Spanish, in Mexico (mexican bootleg reference), kinda referring to the affect you want to do to something relating to its size/provenance/power. Its all in the eye of the beholder here, like with anything else. I find paying astronomical prices for something I consider fair is, well, fair. Deceit is the keyword. I think we are saying similar things in the end and I do feel like we've seen enough scumbags come around, whether copying or passing something as something else, to really drive the point home that it is on US to keep calling them out and helping others with provenance, etc., so they arent scammed. I mean, its easy to go to alibaba, buy the fake and then relist it on ebay without being transparent. Hopefully those collectors can feel comfortable enough to come here and ask if the thing is original or not. We can only hope tho
I meant our project was delivered. I don’t know about the 3D printing . I still ‘invest’ with people if I really like it knowing I could lose my money. From my experience of doing it though problems come from both sides. People use Kickstarter a bit too much like a shop, which it isn’t. But also there are sellers who don’t have the knowledge to actually get a product to market and are winging it and don’t realise the effort it takes to learn how to do it on the job. We could have failed many times and walked. But we cared about the investors and support and just went that extra mile to sort the problem. Eg. Import tax to the states when trump came in. That added 100k to the shipping costs which we didn’t have. We could have legally walked there. No refunds. We didn’t, but it’s the risk people investing should be aware of when buying anything on Kickstarter. Or and this is a bad one. You do too well on Kickstarter. Instead of the 500 units we wanted to do, we were tasked with supplying 3000 it was so popular. That causes a shit load of problems. Never again e hsusted thinking about it.
