Dang this thread makes me second guess trying to make the trek across country for Dcon. Although I never actually sell that much it’s more about hanging with the good folks I only rarely get to see.
I wasn't sure if I'd have time or energy to make a new zine for Dcon this year. Last year was a huge success, all artists involved were great, and I had way too many people asking for a copy that couldn't make it to Dcon. Recently, and at Summer Slime, I had some people asking if I'd have a new 1 for Dcon this year, so I decided to make another. I'm hoping this year's, more low key follow up is a follow up success to last year. I decided to focus on the prints my wife and I made for Dcon. I can't show much yet since toys and prints haven't all been announced, but here is a grainy cropped teaser(with some yet to be revealed art) of the cover. It will have most of our prints from toy collaborations last year and this year. It's a fun zine, I hope you like it. We'll be at a small table this year, Nocturnally Geeky Me booth TD3
You all better make plans to come early. Funko Hollywood Store opening November 18th!!! Spend all your dcon money a week early.
does anyone know if pushead will be coming this year? didn't see him on the vendors list and he hasnt posted anything about it
Club Daikaiju will be at Designer-Con! Head over to Booth 2324 where this exclusive set of Rat-Bat-Spiders from Angry Red Planet will be on sale! Set includes two figures (one red and one glow), and only 24 sets will be available. Pricing TBD.
Sorry for leaving you out in the cold, while I've been spam posting all over Instagram... I'd rather just make 1 big post here once all releases are revealed. Here's a little early tease before I post anything on IG in the next day or 2.
Hey all. Anyone out there willing to help with grabbing me one item at dcon? Would be greatly appreciated.
I put together this snazzy graphic to promote the awesome sofubi vendors in the back of Hall C...not that most of them need any help but I figured a nicer map couldn't hurt. I tried to link to as many accounts as I could on my Instagram so you could go there for more details if ya want. See y'all there!
New collector here. Question: Is the bigger "bang for your buck," if you can't make it to Dcon, to wait for Dcon leftovers? Or to buy up the stuff people are selling here to fund their Dcon trip?
A little bit of A and a little bit of B. DCon will provide essentially new items, so if you're looking for older releases, then funding sales are the go-to. If you want something new, then go with DCon leftovers, but that doesn't mean there will necessarily be leftovers or you may pay a premium/favor for some mule assistance. SO if you see a teaser for Dcon that you liked, there's your answer.
Living on the east coast, working full time and being a small start up toy venture is really frustrating some times. I really hope to travel to DCon some day. It'd be really great to meet so many minds in one space!
I'd elaborate further to say, unless it is a colorway that you can't live without, just wait for the next release. I know Dcon has a crapload of hype because it feels like every toymaker on the planet have something there, and everyone going gets excited and anxious with anticipation. In 2-4 months, we'll see releases from all the same artists and they'll be online lotteries available to the world. In that same 2-4 months Dcon buyers will realize they overspent, or bought into hype, or just don't have the space for everything. Some will even happen a day or week after Dcon because something they bought on Friday is lesser(to them) than something they bought on Saturday. So basically, trust your gut when setting up mules, buying from funding sales, or waiting for leftovers. Being new is so fun and overwhelming when just starting to deep dive into different areas of toys. Also, here's a full zine reveal video... just click on it to watch on IG All art by my wife and I. Includes all of 2018 Dcon collab prints, and most of 2019.
buy what you like. try and get into the mindset of "will I sell this?" if you think you might not be permanently keeping the item, might as well not purchase. sometimes people just want to have something new and shiny... and in the end they are just throwing away money as sometimes what you spent on a item, is not what you're going to get back out of it. Obviously I hope you're working with disposable income. Although that is not always the case.
@eckotyper This was my biggest problem when I first made it to conventions. You see so much cool shit right there in front of you and you don’t have the foresight necessarily to think about whether or not it’s going to remain in your collection either for a prolonged period of time, if not forever. You just see something super rad, and as you said, shiny and new right in front of you so you just have to have it. At least that was my mindset, anyway! Been a lot easier the last few years to just appreciate *everything*, but only walk away with what I truly know I’ll enjoy and keep.
I'd say it took me close to a decade to have this mindset lol, everyone learns as they progress in the hobby, one way or another. I don't see these as $$$. But I do try and see them as if its staying its a great purchase, if i feel it might move at some point, might as well save that $. it does suck though because there is a TON of shit I see pop up that I do like, but it either doesnt fit in to my setups, or I feel it might be first on the chopping block if i was selling some things.
@eckotyper When I first came in I didn’t quite have the income I do now to go too insane at conventions, so I suppose that was my save grace! It’s a pretty gnarly process for when I see any toys I know I want, but don’t know how definitively, or f they’ll fit right in with the rest. The biggest benefit to conventions is being able to see something firsthand and possibly hold/look it over. It’s a whole different battle when you’re only checkin’ out somethin’ online for the first time. I am lookin’ forward to this weekend, though. I’ve narrowed myself down quite a bit, maker wise, but still ponying up to partake in multiple releases from each artist.
I've made my list. Checked it twice. Gonna find out if I can afford all the price...s. Friday I'm going to be running around at top fat guy speed, trying to buy my top toys. Sat will be more relaxed with set lotteries. And I'll also take time to look at everything. Sunday, if I have any money left, will be for gifts. I won't have any money left.
@animator @eckotyper Excellent points. You guys are much more verbose than me on this topic. I’m also still guilty of the shiny, new stuff grab. Better, but still at it. Also, very jealous!!!
