I'm also more used to FF games being turn-based. My favorite in the series is 12 on the PS2, which I've been told is an unpopular opinion lol. I did thoroughly enjoy 16 though, the fighting mechanics are good and graphics are top notch. Gameplay is definitely a far cry from previous FFs, and I can see players who are into traditional FF turn-based mechanics not liking it. I will say that I haven't gone back and revisited the game since beating it, which I usually do with FF games.

Appreciate the FF16 info. I'm not 100% out on non turn based RPGs, but the strategy of turn taking was always more fun to me than the arpg stuff.

And Because no one asked FFX is my favorite actual FF game, but Xenogears is my all time favorite. It's basically a FF game with a different skin, ha!

Xenogears would be my all time if they hadn’t cut it short at the end. Such a tour de force and those anime cut scenes were chef’s-kiss good.

FFX is up there for me as well. FFXII not my cup but the look is one of the best. Love the tactics look

I was a huge fan of the 2D FFs but the new ones look less and less appealing to me with each release.

It's sort of like if the Bob Hoskins Mario movie had been a huge hit and that had become the permanent direction for the Mario series.

    I did like Xenogears though.

OG ff7 is the only one that really matters to me, but I really like the remake.
I got stuck on a boss and stopped playing for awhile but am hoping to get back on it soon.
Even though it's not traditional turn-based, there is a ton of strategy involved and is kindof treated like turnbased w how the enemies react to attacks and the timing of everything. Bosses can never just be slashed a ton of times to beat them. My biggest problem w the game, is that I realized there is never anything worthwhile hiding in some random pathway. But I still find myself going down every single path and out of the way of where I should be going, just to find a potion or some shit. There are no really special items hiding ever, so I'm def gonna bail on treating it like the OG to save time.

I need to retry xenogears because it really didnt do much for me, but I didnt get very far.

Thanks for the reminder on this one. I just found the M2 physical edition on ebay for a very fair price. After watching a few reviews I can see its the usual quality work from shot triggers.

Nice, enjoy. Yeah they're the gold standard for ports. Got Dodonpachi from them pre-ordered, and a rotatable monitor on the way :D

FFVII is the all time in my book also. Hadn't played one since Gameboy before that, so it was such a jump back in. Looking back, Sega Genesis over SNES was possibly the greatest mistake of my life.

Picked up Borderlands 3 yesterday and we spent the day playing it split screen. We like it a lot so far. This is the first game in the series that I've tried and I couldn't help but be reminded of Halo, which I really enjoyed. Love the vast array of guns you pick up in the game and how different they all are from each other. Have a feeling we'll be playing this one quite a bit, thanks again for the recommendation!

Edit: ^^^^^^ Hell yeah! It's tons of fun. Which characters did you roll? On of my favorite things about the franchise as a whole is how different the characters can feel from one another even though you're playing with he same game.

Even though it's one of my favorite games of all time, it is a bit hard to recommend sometimes. There's a ton of dialogue / unskippable cut scenes which can really grate on some people's nerves. The beginning is paced sort of slowly as well. And they ran out of development money so as mentioned the ending is breakneck speed into an abrupt stop.

That being said, there a ton to like as well. Once things open up a bit though you can pretty much do what you want. Lots of open world exploration, and you get to fight in and out of the gears which I found super fun. Thematically it's very interesting with lots of stuff that flew over my head as a kid.

you started with BL3? Wow. I would have suggested BOrderlands 2 to start- 3 may be more impressive technically, but I found the story of 2 to be much more compelling than 3. Just for Handsome Jack alone. Then the original tiny Tina’s dlc (after all the other bl2 dlc) , then the telltale series, then borderlands 3. lol. They’re all good though.

I’m replaying Zombie Army 4 on PlayStation recently after blowing through Mario wonder. It’s just a satisfying mindless game I can replay again and again.

Yea I can't seem to play games in the correct order lol. I'm still too early into BL3 to grasp the story, but really enjoying the gameplay so far.

I think there were only 4 characters to pick from right? I went with Zane and my partner chose Moze.

Yeah, just 4. Zane woind up being my favorite of the bunch. And yeah, BL2s story is way better. The gameplay is still good, but not as dialed in as 3. If you like 3 you'll certainly like 2.

Which was the robot with the pets? That was the character I played in BL3. I played up
Until the hammerlock wedding DLC and then called it quits. BL2 though… I must’ve played that through at least a dozen times. Almost always Zer0…/ Farming Dirty Harold’s, Sandhawk smgs, and Bee shields… man. Good times. Not to mention the pimpernel sniper gun- man… I haven’t thought about these in a long time. And the florentine smg from the tiny Tina DLc! Best smg! That was one thing I felt was a step back, the change in Maliwan weapons in BL3. The slower rate of fire, and the way they handled dual elements… I preferred BL2 maliwan weapons to BL3.

That was Fl4k. He was super fun too. I played a ton of Axton in BL2. Standard run and gun, then with the mag turret. Tons of fun sticking the turret at different angles. Then did a full on grenade build which was probably my favorite of all.

The replayability of the games is one of the best parts. Just lots of options for a relatively simple gameplay loop.

Edit: and totally agree on the Maliwan weapon change.

Yeah, a few people on FB didn't realise it was reversible either. The 'ESP Ra.De' cover is as well, not sure if its a standard thing with M2 on switch?

That collection you ordered looks really good. I think there's quite the backlog at Strictly, so you might be waiting a while, but the games certainly look worth it.

I just got 'DoDonPachi Resurrection' on eBay for a very reasonable price. It's one I've had my eye on for ages, I know it's not a top-tier Cave game but it looks pretty solid. I like the idea of the ships having 3 different play styles.

BTW, you were right about the Aleste collection, it's gorgeous. I love it. So far my faves are GG Aleste 1 & 3 ... M2 really know how to do it right.

Yeah, big delays seem to be standard for these small-run publishers. Rather wait a year or two than pay proper money for a digital download, though.

Glad you're liking Aleste. Looking forward to the new one from M2!

Yeah, going backwards in the series surprised me, but a lot of people say Blissful Death is the best DoDonPachi game overall.

I've had a Psikyo weekend so far, lots of Gunbird, Gunbird 2 and Samurai Aces. I love the art style, makes me think of Metal Slug.

Oh, I meant the new Aleste game:

That Dodonpachi game from m2 is on top of my little pile of switch shmups too, though :D

    Love Gunbird as well!

I tried this one first on Normal mode and got my arse handed to me, so back to Novice mode ... currently learning about bullet cancelling, which i think is the first time i've had that function at my disposal. Cave deserve their reputation, their shmups just seem better. Also, any shooter with lime-green lasers is right up my alley. I love lime-green lasers!

Visited 'Pinball Republic' in Croydon, London on Sunday. Its the first time i've bothered to take photos, took a bunch of random shots, mostly older machines which are rarer and sometimes more interesting from a design perspective. You basically pay a flat-fee and then you can play all the machines for 5 hours on free play.

My fave machines on Sunday were Foo Fighters and Godzilla.

It looks like a shit-hole from outside, and its on an old trading estate where the access road is full of pot-holes.

My last physical shmup purchase of the year ... IKARUGA.

I've waited patiently to find it for a reasonable price, and after a few years it happened :)

Japanese edition with english language support on the menus and tutorials.
