Royal Guards Claymore buff is a bit of a dud unless you’re using it to kill lynels.

In short, the buff only activates just before the sword perishes due to damage: the last one (perhaps a few hits) get the damage buff.

The reason people use this on lynels is because when you are riding them, you can hit them with your sword but it does not degrade the weapon; hence, the ‘how to farm lynels’ vids all show the method of fused RG Claymore, with damage warning in place, being used to whack the hell out of a stunned lynel over and over.

I think that may be what you are asking about? And for regular use, I think the buff is pretty poor but it does go along with the description in the game of the RGC - something along the lines of: ‘massive destructive power before it breaks’

I only know the above because my son was trying to work out how to upgrade his armour and ended up watching YouTube vids.

Personally, I am really enjoying TOTK. Not sure how far into it I am but I have done the four regional anomalies, a bunch of side quests and a lot of shrines as well as opening up chunks of the depths. A superb game and easily a match for BOTW; although that will always have the edge for me because it was the first and felt new and special.

The assistance of the sages is an interesting element. Personally I find them less effective and more of a distraction when you have multiple summoned but I do use their special skills when exploring and relevant, specifically the boulder attack when wanting to crack rocks in caves (saves building hammers!) and Tulin’s gust when gliding.

I want to like shmups more, but all those projectiles on the screen make me too anxious. One of my favorites was one I remember having though was for the sega genesis, it was a biplane that still had ridiculous power ups. Like huge laser blasts that would sweep across the screen. I want to say Tiger was in the name…

Just an update on Mario wonder: it’s fun, but not *fun* the way I remember SMB3 or world being…

firstly, it’s incredibly easy. You almost have to try to die in any given level. I believe I’m on the 5-6 overworld (caverns) and I have well over 20 spare lives. The levels all seem short too.

2 it very much holds your hand as you play. I remember being dropped into a game and having to figure stuff out. This gives you a mini tutorial just about every time you get a new ability or face a new enemy.

    3. There seems to be a lack of secrets. I know there are some secret levels, but I’m pretty sure you’re kind of railroaded into finding them midway through. But there are multiple stages where, for instance, it looks like if you jump *just right* you could get on top of a high platform and reveal some hidden warp zone or reward or something… but I manage the jump and there’s nothing. Or the screen doesn’t scroll up so it doesn’t allow you to stand on the high platform and you just fall down back to the main path… a lifetime of Mario games (and Metroid games if I’m being honest) have taught me to look for alternate paths… but Mario Wonder seems to be lacking them. And because there is no timer on the levels anymore there is no sense of urgency, but also there seems to be no reason (or places) to explore.

4- you can play Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, two different toads, Nabbit and at least 4 Yoshis; but they all play identical. I get the yoshis and Nabbits are for children because they are immune to damage and pitfalls; but they could’ve pulled a Super Mario 2 and given each character a strength or ability to allow for differences in play-throughs. I’ve been playing Luigi solely with the exception of try daisy for a level only to see there was no discernible difference outside of graphical. It was a little disappointing.

it’s a fine game. But it almost plays like it is meant to be an introduction to Mario, rather than the Nth game in a series.

I don’t think I would have spent full price on this had I known what I know now.

There's a biplane game called Fire Shark for the Genesis, the shmups with Tiger in their names were usually Helicopter based. Although confusingly, there is Twin Tiger Shark, but that was a recent retro-styled modern release.

I always thought bullet hell was too difficult but i've realised they're often easier than the old school shooters in many ways, now I've got into them. Yes, the screen can fill up and look chaotic, but the bullets are slower and often not aimed directly at you. Also, the hitbox is tiny on modern shmups, most of your ship doesn't count if you get hit. And there are many options for setting the level of difficulty on bullet hells, endless continues and such ...

When I go back to games like R-Type I'm surprised how difficult they are!

@hellopike pretty much aligned with everything you said about Mario Wonder. It's really a bit too quick of a game, kind of wish there were difficulty settings - I ran through it in around 10 hours minus the secret worlds (which are actually difficult).

It's a beautifully made game between the art style, quirky animations, and amazing score. Just needs about 300 more levels ha!

I am looking forward to the Super Mario RPG remake, it looks fantastic.

I've been playing the Sega ASTRO city mini V. it's loaded with tons of shmups of 90's and some even older. I have it hooked up to a rotating monitor to get the best experience out of the games. It's really awesome :D

Agreed on the easiness/quickness of SMW - I'm forcing myself to take it slowly, otherwise I'd already have completed it. I still love it though, but Super Mario World still stands as my #1. I'm looking forward to re-playing New Super Mario Bros, and taking a first run at SMB Wii-U - if anything will take the #1 spot from World it'll be one of those.

Wait which is which? “New Super Mario Bros. U deluxe” is on the switch, but what is the others official title? I’ve been meaning to get NSMBUD (that’s a mouthful even as an abbreviation) but I just haven’t gotten around to it. Then I heard so many great reactions to Wonder I figured I’d grab that first.

"New SMB" was released on Wii and "New SMB Wii-U" was an expanded version (I think?) released on Wii-U. I never had a Wii-U. I'm not sure if the version released for Switch is exactly the same as what was released on Wii-U or not...or if "Deluxe" is specific to Switch. I only ever played New SMB on Wii. But I just picked up a copy of NSMB Wii-U Deluxe.

Exactly what I was doing. Last hit Mulduga jaw fused royal guard's claymore with bone proficiency armor. Pretty sure the buffs were behind a kill number wall. Made a setup without the buff, and it was still able to one shot a silver Lyonel. Then after I killed a whole bunch every bloodmoon, I started getting the buffs. That was my cue to get the Hylian shield too. Went with durability up over defense up.

Just to clarify, when you fuse, the damage to the weapon is negated, so you need to 'damage' it back down to the point before it breaks (flashing red). That's when it is useful to use on the lynels back.

I don't venture into tis thread very often and can only imagine that this is how toy related conversations sound to the rest of the world.

All I see are jumbled up sentences, meaningless acronyms and made up words.

Yep, like most nerdy pursuits. You have to exclude outsiders!

My most recent physical shmup purchase for the Switch. Batsugun was released in 1993 in the arcade and the boosted release is a port of the Saturn version. Its a pitch-perfect shooter IMO, exactly what i was looking for. All sprite work, no 3D, ridiculous amounts of powerful ship weaponry. This game is considered one of the first bullet hell style, its fast and furious with a pumping rock soundtrack. You feel like a total badass when you get in the zone!

It was another Switch port that the nerds online say has bad input-lag, but i haven't noticed anything wrong with the port at all. It plays like a dream, just like most other games they say are very 'laggy'. Maybe i'm not particularly sensitive to input lag, but i swear if it wasn't mentioned, most gamers wouldn't even notice it.

I finished SMW over the last weekend. It was quick, and Bowser was surprisingly a fun battle. Not frustrating, but challenging in a fun way. I won’t ruin it for anyone playing it now, but I enjoyed it. Wish it was longer. I’m surprised sidescrolling platform games don’t get new level dlc packs. Dead Cells does it, but that’s a roguelike. But if Nintendo were to drop additional worlds every couple months- and the price was decent, I’d go for it for sure.

I had that thought the other night as I played my way through a few levels. As long as the initial game isn't made purposely short I would love new DLC levels added to these games. Kinda like MarioKart. Speaking of MK - even just re-making some levels from previous Mario games would be fun!

Yesterdays mail, another physical shmup for my collection!

'Danmaku Unlimited 3' is an indie title that takes all the good things about bullet hell games and refines them into a sleek and responsive gaming experience. I love this game already, and i always appreciate being able to remap the button configurations, which has really helped. Its a simple shooter but what it does, it does very well. The only criticism about this game i saw online, are the backgrounds are too plain and boring, but i think this works in the games favour. The projectiles are much easier to see, mainly because there is no extra detail in the background to deal with. It makes it look very clean and futuristic ...

In my latest search for a good action/adventure RPG game, I've recently tried:

    1) Elden Ring - Never been good at souls-like games but decided to give this one a try. Couldn't stop being terrible at the game so I returned it.
    2) Ghostwire - Couldn't get into this game at all, I had a hard time adjusting to first person coming from mostly third person games. Story was a little bland and I didn't enjoy the fighting.
    3) Final Fantasy 16 - this game was awesome. Beautifully written and developed. Highly recommend this one. I've only beaten the main story so far, haven't gotten to any of the side quests/bosses, but even the story took me 2-3 weeks to get through.
    4) Assassin's Creed Mirage - I played this one a couple of times and just couldn't get into the story. I also recently played Valhalla so I was already all AC'ed out. Took it back and exchanged it for:
    5) Plague Tale Requiem - Currently working through this one and it's pretty good so far. I probably should have played the prequel first, but Requiem is solid. Controlling bubonic rats to kill enemies is kinda gross yet really cool.

I've also been looking into co-op games to play with my significant other and so far we've tried:
    1) It Takes Two - Solid, fun game. Pretty cheap to buy at this point and kept us entertained for awhile.
    2) A Way Out - Not enjoying this one as much as It Takes Two, but we just started and have only played it once so far.
    3) Kitaria Fables - This one was kind of fun at first, but after playing it a second time it became a little repetitive. 4/10 maybe.

How is the Combat in Final Fantasy? I'm more of a turn based menu kind of guy with my RPGs, but I recently played the FFVII remake and it was decent (combat being my least favorite change by a huge margin).

I played Tales of Arise when it came out and it's super solid.

I'm still in deep on Baldurs Gate. It's also two players if you like they like narrative stuff/ DnD.

Mario Kart and Mario Party are pretty classic co-op games if you have a switch.

If you're up for FPS you can do Borderlands 3 (easily the best entry in the series) solo or co-op. Borderlands was one of my all time favorite franchises / games until they changed things up with 4. TINY Tina's Wonderland was better, but still doesn't touch 3. You don't really have to play 1 or 2 to play 3. There's a few characters that show up / call backs, but you can fill in those gaps with a quick Wikipedia synopsis.

Thanks for all the recommendations, I’ll be looking into some of those, especially borderlands. I’ve heard good things about it and it’s definitely been on my radar, especially if it’s co-op.
FF16 is not turn based. It’s very much a slash away and dodge game. I think the best way I can describe it with my very limited videogame knowledge would be maybe like a Devil May Cry? In some parts of the game you fight as Ifrit, which is pretty badass. It’s packed with cutscenes, which may or may not be good depending on the player. I enjoyed it more so for the story. This FF is more profane and rated M than previous games in the series, which was pretty refreshing. Dialogue was also well written/voiced and not cringe worthy. I’d recommend checking it out if you’re into action adventure RPGs

I think it's more of an issue when you are already familiar with a game and then try to play a version with lag. But either way, if I'm paying full price for a game for 30 years ago, I prefer my money to go to companies that are putting effort into making accurate ports.

I bought a Switch last year pretty much solely to play the new Kikikaikai (Pocky & Rocky) game, which didn't disappoint.

Also enjoyed Aleste Collection. GG Aleste 3 is amazing - not just for being a 2020s GameGear game, but also a beautifully designed shooter in general.

Just picked up Progear no Arashi on sale for 100 yen. One of my favourite Cave games and never released on console before.

Planning on getting Mario Wonder. Like everyone's saying, nothing will ever beat the NES/SNES classics, but it's nice that Nintendo can still produce games with a good amount of charm, and the new stuff has the advantage of being simultaneous co-op.

Yeah, i've got that too but finding it quite difficult to play. I read somewhere that in the original version you can strafe whilst firing, which would of probably made it easier ...

Yeah, i have my eye on that one. The 'new' game they developed would certainly be a big reason to pick up that collection.

I'd love to play it. Cave certainly live up to their reputation, and i've only played a couple of their games. I'd love to play them all.

I beat the PC Engine version on one credit in anticipation of getting it, so compared to that it was a breeze

One of the best 100 yens I've ever spent! My favourites are that, Esprade (available on Switch), and Guwange (Xbox only unfortunately.) Been playing them for like 20 years and haven't actually beat any of them. Their newer stuff doesn't appeal to me so much with the lolicon aesthetic, but they do the bullet hell thing better than anyone.

Oh, FF is my favorite in terms of looks and stories but boy is the active combat or whatever they call these new “smash-buttons-until-magic-is-available“ releases just crap. Since FFXIII it’s just been a constant wait for some decent turn based FF. The second part to FFVII hopefully has more staticness to it bc if I wanted an action game, squarenix isn’t the studio for it. Lol.

FFVIII is one of my fave games ever and I’m just dreading the day they announce the remake in this garbage landscape of frito-lay pie gaming advances.
