I was feelin a bit reclusive this weekend so i rented some new style vampire flix: Underworld 2 - evolutions and Nightwatch. I dig both of these, and can't wait to see the sequel to nightwatch.
Not a vampire movie but I watched a movie called Singapore Sling this weekend and it was absolutely amazing, so fuckin weird and perverted, but also so unbelievably good. I also watched a super low budget old stop motion monster movie called Equinox, it's about some peeps that go to a cabin and find a weird book of incantation spells and encounter monsters and other creeps that possess them, and this movie came out before Evil Dead, it was just released by Criterion Collection on DVD strangely enough. But on a more vampire note I just got my ticket booked yesterday to go to Transylvania and other Euro cities in Septemeber.
Just got done watching a burned disc of a UK horror film called "The Descent". Rigtious! It was pretty good - slow at first but pickes up in the second half. Not gonna spoil it for anybody.
I posted about The Descent a couple months ago. Doc, PM me and tell me how the version you saw ends. they changed the ending for the upcoming US release and I want to make sure you saw the good one. Also, some great stuff you've been watching there, Count. I haven't seen that release of Singapore Sling yet. I've only seen the movie on really bad, shitty quality dubs. I'm excited to pick it up and have a clear, crisp copy. and I LOOOOOVE EQUINOX and am so happy and somewhat surprised that Criterion released it. so glad they did though.
doesn't matter what you think about anime or not, "vampire hunter d: bloodlust" is one of the best vampire films i've ever seen. i just mention about it being anime cuz lots of peeps would just ignore it. it's pretty much insane.
Years ago I always used to pass on the bootleg VHS at the video store because it didn't have a write up on the box and I always assumed it was just another perverted Asian exploitation movie, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it just didn't put it at the top of my list, now I wish I had seen it sooner, it's freaking amazing. The DVD looks great, it has the option to watch it with original Subs which they say are out of synch and not entirely accurate translations, or with these new retarded subs that they have done that actually appear in a grey box that covers up the old subs and ends up covering a large part of the screen, I just watched it with the originals and it seemed fine enough, most of it was in english anyways, next time I watch it I'll have to try to check out the grey box version if it doesn't drive me to crazy. Equinox was pretty rad and looks way better than it did on the crappy VHS I watched a long time ago, I thought it was pretty weird to see it in the Criterion section.
the trailers/commercials they're showing in the US now totally give away a lot of the good stuff. stupid Americans. Parka (or anyone else for that matter), have you seen any of the other films that are part of the big UK horror boom right now (Evil Aliens, Wilderness, Isolation (okay that's from Ireland), etc.)?
EQUINOX was brought out from criterion, becuase it's the work of Dennis Muren. Jim Danforth. David Allen, for the FX, the best is how much evil dead ripped this flick off, really fun movie
lol one of my friends was just asking me about equinox last week i loved nightwatch saw it in a preview at a theater cant wait for daywatch (a friend has abootleg) i heard they may film the thrid one in the US with a major studio though
i agree.. descent looks weak. so does the poster. nightwatch was pretty cool. a little tough to follow at points, but maybe that was because i was half asleep towards the end. (note: i fall asleep during almost any movie so don't hold that against NW)
I've still only seen Nightwatch via shitty bootleg with no subtitles, I'll have to rent it soon. Has anyone seen the new Toby Hooper movie, I think called the Mortuary? I rented it last night but haven't watched it yet, I'm hoping it's as good as his version of the Toolbox Murders was... ...joking, that movie sucked so hard.
the real US version of nightwatch has amazing subtitles they incorporate into the story if that makes sense i've heard a few other people complain it was hard to follow but i saw it with like 5 people and we all thought it was pretty straight forward boo to falling asleep lol i do that all th time usually takes me 2 times to watch a dvd
I heard they didn't use those really cool subtitles for the North American DVD release? It was definitely pretty hard to follow in Russian.
movies Right there with ya, Skylar! Although I have a HUGE obession with Anne Bettis -- I can handle any film she's in Nightwatch was pretty good. I have a feeling that the series will be one of those that's best if you watch all three movies back-to-back. Underworld 2 was okay, but not as good as the first IMHO...although anytime Kate's in her rubber / vinyl outfit...yow..makes a movie watchable. For my money, though, if you want to see an excellent "vampire" flick you have to watch Near Dark! Very solid movie, great acting and a plot that'll have you going "damn, that's a cool idea". KW
someone gave me Near Dark on dvd a couple years ago. i never got a chance to watch it just kinda made its way to the back of the dvd shelf. i'll have to dig it out now.
I just watched the Lucky Mckee episode of Masters of Horror with Angela Bettis in it. it was pretty good, but not my favorite that I've seen so far. she uses this really weird voice the whole time that's kind of annoying.
