my wife and i are going to portland this december. any places that we need to eat at or visit? thanks in advance for any suggestions!
What do you like to eat? There are tons of good restaurants. Cheap to expensive. Alberta and Mississippi have lots of restaurants and food carts. Grüners is a really good German restaurant downtown - I didn't think I particularly liked German food, but I love this place. There are also lots of hotels if you haven't already made arrangements - McMenamins has a couple but they aren't your typical hotel. Generally you have a shared bathroom down the hall. But the White Eagle has a lot of cool history, is supposedly haunted, and is pretty cheap. The Kennedy School is a lot larger and has a soaking pool, several bars/restaurants, a movie theatre, billiards and shuffleboard. If you're into arcades there are a couple good old-school arcades - Ground Kontrol and Avalon. The weather is pretty crappy in December, but if you bring appropriate clothing you can hike around - Mult. Falls as suggested, and Forest Park is the largest park (and it's a rain forest!) within city limits in the US. There's an underground tour (which I still have never done!)...and there's a HAUNTED underground tour too! Depending on when you come SantaCon might be happening...if you're into dressing up as Santa and bar hopping with tons of other people also dressed up as Santa. Maybe check out the Portland Mercury the week before you come to see if there are any events you're interested in.
Check out Grass Hut and Billy Galaxy for toys. If you come to Grass Hut on a tuesday I'll be there . If you want to see cool art... check out hungryeyeball.com It should list all the shows around the time you'll be here. My favorite pizza is at http://www.sizzlepie.com/. favorite indian food is http://www.india-grill.com/ Dots Cafe in SE Portland is a cool late night spot to get a drink and maybe a little bit of food.
awesome! can't believe i forgot about grass hut! i'll make sure to visit. keep the rec's coming! thanks!
LOVE Dot's! Been eating Cheddar Fries there for nearly 20 years. Might be my all-time favorite meal. Was just there on Sunday and had one of the best orders of cheddy fries ever (they are sometimes inconsistent...but when they get it right there's nothing better). Some of the best beer I've had lately has been from Breakside Brewery - phenomenal beers.
The cheddar fries at dots (I get the jalepeno ones) are definitely my favorite. The large order (even the small order) is HUGE! I like the spicy tofu sauce a lot too.
i liked clyde common, pok pok, screen door, and toro bravo for dinner. and I shared a mean bowl of green curry from a food truck. You should probably go every other day to grass hut. If not more often. is the fish ladder frozen in december?
portland was AWESOME! really loved it. the people, the food, everything. thanks everyone for the recommendations! cool looking buildings in downtown view from outside our second hotel no tax! oblation papers and press tasty & sons - great breakfast place. personally not a big fan of breakfast, but this was really good. had the cheddar biscuit fried chicken which was great. wife got that platter with all kinds of goodness. not shown is the date wrapped in bacon!!! apizza scholls - delicious pizza! horrendous wait! tastes like pizza i can get down here in certain areas, but it's twice as big at pizza scholl's salt & straw - really good ice cream. shown are the pear w/ blue cheese and lemon basil sorbet. we went back for a second helping and had the rose city (honey balsamic, strawberry and cracked pepper) and a lavender one. i tried their duck fat caramel ice cream, holy hell that was good. kenny & zuke's sandwichworks - really good pastrami sandwich, the apple turkey was pretty good as well. they have an all out deli in downtown with a better sandwich i read. little big burger - i loved this place. we came twice. i had the burger with chèvre cheese and my wife had the cheddar. second time around i had the veggie burger which was really good as well. it was like a hybrid of in-n-out and umami burger. hesler's on alberta - had the smoked salmon hash. was good. voodoo doughnuts - we of course had to go.maple bacon, voodoo doll with raspberry jam, mango doughnut. we went a second time and i had the cap'n crunch (the cereal was stale ) their creme filled doughnuts were alright. brunchbox - one of the MANY food carts throughout downtown. i had the youcanhascheeseburger which is a regular burger but has texas toast grilled cheeses as buns. really good.
Damn, nice photos. I really have no excuse for not having tried all those places. Id go outside now but It's snowing
Is Doctor Tongue's still there in Portland? http://www.drtonguestoys.com/ I'll second Multnomah Falls and Billy Galaxy too.
He closed up shop a couple years ago unfortunately. Mango Tango is the best in my oppinion. Mango filling with tang icing.
