So I'm shitting my pants. Takashi Miike adaptation of Django, the greatest crappy spaghetti western ever!!!!! Anyone seen it already?
It even has a Japanese version of the Django theme song! I wish it had a Franco Nero cameo instead of Tarantino.
It is awesome! Great use of colors, and the fight scenes are pure Miike, Awesome, gross, and hilarious. I can't wait til it gets a good American release with cool packaging.
its been in my netflix queue for the entire year. last month that they had set a release date for the dvd. and now it doesn't look like it will come out ever.
Miike's genre work can sometimes be sketchy, however he did a nice job retaining typical Western elements without succumbing to parody. That's not to say the film isn't zany, in fact it matches Ichi the Killer in the zany department, only this time with the over the top gore and shock treatment dialed down considerably. Think more Kill Bill than Gozu or Audition. What's interesting is the film follows a pretty straightforward and tightly knit narrative and even has moments that hint of greek tragedy, specifically Orpheus. Tarantino's cameo at the beginning sets the show for a rousing affair, however his return later in the film is unneccessary if not unwelcome. The weapons the gangs use run the gamut from samurai swords to sophisticated sub-machine guns, and there is of course the ubiquitous sword slashing through flying bullitt shot. I saw the movie during its North American premier during the Toronto Film Festival's Midnight Madness program. The film included English subtitles, as some filmgoers supposedly had trouble understanding the English being spoken by the Japanese actors. I had no such trouble however. Anyhow, the film is set to be released this November on region 1 DVD and Blu-ray Disc so keep an eye out on Amazon or your favorite retailer.
on the 12th it will be playing at the Nuart theatre in west Los Angeles.I am going to see it for sure
Good, because Gozu hurt my brain : / I have been wanting to grab the JP blu ray of this but if a english version is coming ill hold out.
Actually, I just found it priced very affordably at Amazon.jp for 3595 Yen which is a great price. There are no subtitles, but again the film is in Engrish! Here's the link: http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B0010XIPSU
I missed it at the NYAFF. I think this has been done for a while, actually. I've seen boot style discs in NYC, but didn't pick it up for some dumb reason. probably spent all my money on toys.
I saw it the other day! Wasn't as great as I hoped it would be, but pretty cool and by the end when they tied it to Django I was pretty pumped so I watched django when I got home! Woooo!
