Snuff has always been an urban legend.

While working on EsoTerra Magazine throughout the '90s, I've had many contacts that you would not want to meet and all agreed.

Good documentary, fun way to kill 45 minutes.

One thing about Guinea Pig, though: one of the reasons people thought that it might have been a real snuff flick was that it was shot on video, adding to the gritty, basement-production feel of it. Also, it wasn't actually officially distributed in the US, so the way people usually saw it was a copy of a copy of a copy. The resulting effect was pretty genuine.

Also, Tsutomu Miyazaki, the serial killer who had a copy of Guinea Pig, was dubbed the "Otaku Murderer" by the press, and this is considered the first widespread use of the word, as well as the source of the negative stigma attached to it. I wouldn't expect the documentary to highlight this detail, but it did neglect to mention that he was physically deformed, giving the case a horror-movie aspect.

I also like how the British pronounce "boogeyman." ;p

Is it still a snuff video if it is made for your own personal use, or only if it is for some kind of distribution?

People have definitely murdered other people on video before, and I would believe if there aren't videos like that floating around out there now there will be. Video making and video distribution is much easier now than it ever has been and you would have to think that someone, some kid out there who has grown up with this technology will be a murderer and will utilize this particular form of media for fame...

yep the definition of snuf is that it must me made and distributed through a network, there are quite a few recorded incidents of people videoing them killing someone and keeping the video to watch but no recorded incidents of people distributing the footage , which is wierd really as with this big ole internets you'd think a snuff ring would not be beyond the realms of comprehension

I think the general consensus is that you make it with the intent to distribute it and gain some form of fame or fortune, but remain anonymous enough to not be caught.

otherwise, there would be lots of examples of snuff, like various police/news videos or Twilight Zone: The Movie.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking, if it isn't out there now it's bound to happen.

    time to launch Snufftube?

I think what keeps people from doing it is the risk of getting caught is still too great. everything is still way too traceable.

you'd think with all the crazies out there that it wouldn't matter, but apparently even the crazies aren't that stupid.

So, then, doesn't that lend argument to the statement "Snuff does not exist (yet)"?

thing is you could say that about paedos ? essentially they know they are gonna go away for a very long time if caught but doesn't stop them from having clubs all over the net..........so I am actually surprised no real snuff cases have arisen.

it depends on how far you take the definition i suppose, I mean that couple in trailerville a few months back, abducted , raped, tortured and killed a teenage girl and recorded it on dvd, and would just sit at home watching their handiwork, i would say that is snuff (death for entertainment) but because they didnt distribute it , it isn't regarded in the FBI's mind as snuff?

I guess you're right, but don't forget, we're talking about 2 different styles of crime here.

murder/making a snuff film requires disposing of a body, it's messy, people go missing, etc. and therefore probably much harder to get away with

i hear what youre saying, the case i was referring to at the start of this thread wasn't filmed but he ended up chainsawing the body into bin liners and throwing them in the local swamp, lots of ho ha at the time as the guy was quite hevily involved in the horror seen over here in the uk, i cant imagine how big your balls would have to be to think you could cut a body up and get away with it...

Man if that happened during the time of video nasties witch hunts shit would have hit the fan, I heard stories of people getting arrested and facing serious shit just for owning horror movie collections, they would have gone off of the deep end if someone involved in that scene did something like that.

Donnie can you send me the press links on that if you have a minute?

A few years ago I read a book called 'Killing For Culture' which was an exhaustive search for the elusive snuff flick. It included the hilarious story of a drugged-out Charlie Sheen alerting the FBI when he thought he found a true snuff flick.
The authors found no true snuff flicks.

Those beheading videos from Iraq are the closest thing I've ever seen...

I'd say they're snuff films. Another thing that retarded monkey in the White House is in large part responsible for is creating an environment where horrors like this occur and can be videoed and distributed with impunity.

If you haven't checked it out already, there's a book called Gods of Death by Yaron Svoray which is about an investigator that was hired by Robert De Niro (who was slated to work on the movie 8mm at the time) to find him a snuff film. It's a little anti-climactic but a worthwhile read.
