gonna be down in l.a. for a couple of days, and saw this: http://www.santaanita.com/specialevent/ ... november-5 anyone have any experiences with any of these 70 food trucks? i want to for sure try grill 'em all, but am not certain about any others.
I like these: grilled cheese truck Boba Truck(they sweeten it to your liking) OG Tempura(only had it once but it was really good) Baby's Badass Burgers(more a visual novelty of hot women serving up sliders)
Tried a few of these - heres my capsule review: Babys Badass Burgers - average, expensive = pass Cheeseball Wagon - ok, small portions, expensive Grill em all - gigantic portions - heart attack in a bun - ate their twice, maybe wont again as I always feel sick afterwards. Behemoth sandwich is more real men with small arteries. Lardon - Food was OK but paid $7.50 for a BLT that weighed about 2ounces and took a minute to eat - ripoff Meat n Potatoes - yeah, this one is OK, not amzing, but OK Ragin Cajun - man, I would love to try this one again - whatever I had was awesome...I just remember it being creamy and delicious (no comments please) The Ymmy One - This is a vietnamese food truck if I remember right - ate their a few times and always good. Decent portions and decent price
I occasionally find myself at food trucks but they are way way overrated. I have not had anything in a food truck that I could not make myself or get at a basic restaurant. They're convenient in some cases but if there's a line then I'm gone because I can find much better food at a traditional sit down place. The exception are taco trucks. It just works in that format since it's pretty simple.
I concur for teh most part. Luckilly, I've been able to try out the places above at lunch time outside my place of work. Our old bldg supervisor used to arrange for them to show up - and they made a welcome addition to the local (fairly boring after a while) restaurants. I have had some great tacos - but can never recall which truck Best ever was a Shrimp Taco truck at the Sunset Strip Music Fest 2010 - they were amazing and $5 foir two giant juicy flavorful tacos at a music fest is damn good. Best value was a place Kirklands mates took us too on Olympic late on a Friday night. $1 each Taco - and 4 of em were pretty filling. For the most part tho - the hip trucks are overpriced and portions small.
The food truck gatherings are great if you've never done it before. But when they gather the lines can average up to an hour per truck. Thats a lot of wait time for average. Food trucks are better when one parks out front of where your going, like a comic book store, and the line is basically non-existant. D-Con will have enough of a line for me for the day.
For those of you that are in town tonight it is First Thursday Food Truck Night on Melrose Ave. Come down have some good eats and visit TAG while your at it. I'll second Lardon and Grilled Cheese trucks. Can also recommend Lobsta, Flatiron, and Buttermilk trucks. I love LA food trucks. Where else can you get a Japanese langoustine burrito or a coddled egg on top of potato puree served in a glass jar with toast points for $5 (that from Egg Slut Truck.) Egg Slut will be on Melrose tonight. Also have to mention Cool Haus. Hand made to order ice cream sandwiches. Try the Maple Bacon ice cream on a Snickerdoodle cookie.
