I really like this guy's work but damn... Does he price his stuff high or what. I don't know if he's completely new to the toy scene or was formerly an artist of another kind, but it really grinds my gears seeing people selling their toys for ridiculously high amounts right off the bat. Yes, MVH sizes, but (at least from what I've seen) above MVH prices? Talk about tooting your own horn.
Not sure what you're talking about, honestly. 1st edition miyajuana was $135 + shipping and it's bigger than a DX. Did he jack up his prices or something? This was in June. https://softoyhobby.com/2016/06/19/plt-toys-first-edition-miyajuana-sofubi/
I will say that from what I've seen the $250-300 figures were painted 1-offs or small runs with other artists painting (and getting a cut I'm sure) blanks have been sold for considerably less, even with cool basketball jersey's. What do you guys think they should sell for?
Fellow Chris, I own the very first Miyajuana. It came with 2 heads and the paint job is FANTASTIC. I paid about $300 IIRC. It's really hard to figure out a price honestly because prices are all over the map nowadays. The last toy I got PK's Sludge Kraken for $185. Using KM's Law of Sofubi Economics (Size * paint / popularity) I'd throw out a totally arbitrary number of $200 for a Miyajuana run.
Truthfully, I liked the Blood Majin with wig enough when it came out to pay over 200, on the Unbox blank sale. It looked like a wild beast. He made this cool baby kappa figure, that looked like a mix of a Kewpie and a Kappa, I would have loved to see made into vinyl.
Link ^ Link to Papalemons Facebook page, some vague info on the cancellation of the Kappa Baby figure.
I'm pretty into the CoolieHigh sculpt, for the most part. I like the gnarled face and the busted-up back. In many ways though, I certainly agree with the prices being a bit higher than what I would have expected, depending on the piece. The first Blood Majin pictures from unbox blew me away! It was super creepy and weird, I was lovin' on it right away.
Love the new head that Zectron sculpted. The body has such a great style but I didn't like the previous heads, very excited for a somewhat affordable version of the Alien Spell.
@obsessedpanda killed this Blood Majin ANOES homage: I really cant wait for that Zectron Alien S'pell head to be released.
Hahaha, I love your Law of Sofubi Economics. But yeah, that's what I'm saying... I love the Miya and the Blood Majin. I think they're incredible. Are they $300 incredible? I can't really say. If I played it smart and was patient, I could probably get 3 used toys the same size for that same amount. They wouldn't be PLTtoys, but I'd probably be a lot happier. Also can I just say that I would totally buy that little cyborg pitbull on its own? So cute.
The trend I see in Chinese toy makers is that they're pricing WELL above what you would expect from pretty much any other toy maker. 2 other Chinese makers I also like a lot are priced well above what you would expect, and of the 3 PL Toys is the cheapest.
Uninspired, derivative, trying too hard (DICK-HEAD!!! VAGINA-FACE..!!!!11!), ridiculously overpriced. Can we please get a "Chinese Crap" sub already?
While some of the figures might be overpriced and this goes ESPECIALLY for the Cooliehigh figures. There are equally just as expensive Japanese ones as well. Does it really have to be separated though? It still comes from Asia its just not Japan. It kind of reminds me of how some ppl would get annoyed by Korean Manga hybrids.
^^ True, the Japanese are obviously jumping on the crazy price bandwagon, however there's still enough reasonably priced sofubi out there. If you're paying more than $150 (unless it's a huge toy), you're just paying for the hype imo. I wouldn't have an issue with Chinese toys if they had a history in sofubi, in which case I assume they would have been discussed here already prior to 2016. But this a forum dedicated mainly to Japanese toys, a lot of which have a pretty distinct aesthetic and cultural background besides just being made of sofewbee. I realize you didn't mean any offense by it, but I feel that "Oh well it's all Asian" is a slightly problematic statement...
I've not seen any "vagina face" figures here yet, though i have seen some actually from Japan sorry anyway if that offends you... I would say the sub we need is a UNBOX sub. They are producing fast and furiously.
^^ Look at the facebook you linked. There's vagina-face. Which, nope, isn't offensive to me per se, I just find this particular artist's efforts pretty contrived. Dunno what Japanese figures with vagina-faces you're talking about, you might be thinking of Fetish Mode? Also, if these are designed by a Chinese guy and actually produced by Unbox (apparently I had this one confused with some OTHER thread where it was stated that Unbox was not involved), then why the hell is this not in "American Idols"?
QUOTE="bunnyboy, post: 912118, member: 15629"] I wouldn't have an issue with Chinese toys if they had a history in sofubi, in which case I assume they would have been discussed here already prior to 2016. But this a forum dedicated mainly to Japanese toys, a lot of which have a pretty distinct aesthetic and cultural background besides just being made of sofewbee. I realize you didn't mean any offense by it, but I feel that "Oh well it's all Asian" is a slightly problematic statement...[/QUOTE] I guess im just not seeing why we must separate things even further on the forums than what they are. Especially every time a we have another country getting in on making the toys that is not American or Japanese based. But these kinds of talk should be else where to be honest.
^^ "Separate things even further"? C'mon - right now it's Japan, US & Vintage Vinyl. You really feel a fourth category for the rest of Asia would be excessive? Besides, I'm not sure we'll have "another country" jumping on the bandwagon anytime soon, and in case it happens, I'm all for more separation. Whether a toy is Japanese isn't determined just by the material used to make it afaic - of course you could make a sofubi d*nny, but that wouldn't make it "Japanese". And if we actually had a dedicated sub I'm pretty sure you guys wouldn't have to deal with the grumpy crew's annoyance at clicking on yet another new Chinese/Taiwanese/whatever thread in the Japan Toys section. Sounds like a win-win to me...
There are definitely different aesthetics that come with different regions. Same way as how some people prefer European comic book artwork to American styles. You can generally pick out HK/Chinese designed toys.. and their style isn't for everybody. I'm down with a new sub-forum.. Especially seeing as it looks like the HK/Chinese output could grow much larger over the next year or so.
I saw some of the newer HK based vinyl toy makers were at Designer Con this year like Kearjun and vintage viny club. Papalemon remains somewhat illusive, though I have a bit of a dialog with him regarding a collaboration with myself. I'm really hopeful it happens because regardless of any other issues all the figures seen really crazy and fun to paint, imo. Found this Billiken vinyl kit figure of the possible speculated inspiration for the PLT Puppet.
I'd say this is a much bigger influence... considering the PLT version has the seams mid-bicep for no reason other than the NNN Zombie version has them.
