I would be lying if I told you that all of these were not getting pinstriped. That is unless someone $tops me . I'm a pinstriper thats what I do.....
The kun is my franken berry tribute. The vinyl is not that great of quality. I may have to add some highlight striping to hide some of the manufacturing imperfections.
granted, customizers have a style it seems, but outside of the actual colors used everything i have seen pretty much looks exactly the same base coat of glossy, glittery faded color pinstripe/flames i know you are skilled with your paint application, but i would like to see more variety and more creative approaches to applying it
Thanks for the critique pickleloaf. I agree that this is my style. Pinstriping, fades, color change, high gloss clear coat, real fire, etc. Painting customs is a very small part of what I do. In all that I do I strive to be different/stand out from the rest of the pack. (be it good or bad). I just don't see any point in taking an evil or some other blank figure and painting pink to blue with v color. There have been a bunch of kick ass customizers who used to post there work on here on a regular basis. I read those old posts pretty frequently.Where did all of those guys go?. Love it or hate it I do what I do and I feel that my paint stylings have given something a little different to the kaiju industry.
that's fair, and i will agree that this style has brought something new to the table but eventually that thing is going to be old hat. it's a marmit such and such with automotive glitter and pinstripes/flames as far as a majority of the customizers here go, you are already fairly prolific in your painting in comparison. more than a dozen figures i'd say in a relatively short time. buffmonster or buff whatever his name is did the same thing here. he was established in another format, then came here with figure after figure after figure. that were all pink and white, which black/pink/white splatter. it's his style, but it's all the same. he did not seem interested in being part of the community here but rather putting his stuff out there for a new market. (like saying the chaos trade really wasnt his thing) to me it eventually seems like someone is not here to contribute to the hobby and show respect to the history of it all... (there are a lot of people here that have a deep respect or whatever you want to call it for all of this) and just to sell something that is the flavor of the day i dont want to come across as knocking what you are doing... granted it's not my thing, but i know it's great to a lot of people here.
dude - i love what you're doing to this figures. I don't really like the neo-kaiju stuff as much as old school kaiju, or new sculpts that are heavily influence by actual Japanese toys - so your paintjobs are allowing me to see and appreciate a lot of these neo-kaiju sculpts in a whole new light. For instance, I have no interest in the production deathra/desura - but I'd love to have one customized and pinstriped by you. keep at it.
I think, you should take one of those SB figs, and join the SB Swap. You'd make someone really happy with one of those customs and you'd get one just as cool. As far as the customs, I agree with pickleloaf in a way. You're work is top quality, but a lot of them end up seeming the same. You just have to change it up a little, like the one Skullbrain you got there that looks like it retains some of the unpainted clear vinyl- that one interestes me the most in the pictures because its different, but still in "your" style of painting. Try making the pinstriping mimic bone structure or innards or something on one of the customs. Someone made a joke about painting a wizard on one of your customs- hell, give that a try. =) phll edit- oh yeah, and Pickleloaf- you should join in the SB Swap too.
You forgot the part where he tried to sell/sold them for hundreds of dollars. A seat for every ass, I guess, or maybe that goes the other way. Also, something about the term 'kaiju industry' makes me shudder. I hope I never hear it again. Here at least. I also don't think it would hurt to have a few less customs each week. Some of the best customizers on this board only show off a few pieces each year. Granted your work is quite nice- of the highest quality- but Godzilla help me, a part of me cringes each time a production paint is sacrificed to the altar of customs... I like to think that the sacrifices are at least meaningful.
I just paint over production pieces that are still easy to get...pearl red chaos, early hone borgs, flesh RxH...the unwanted stuff or stuff that is being sold well below retail. I also try to name every custom I paint. It just gives it more meaning instead of just painting masturbation (this was an actual term a professor used). Naming the customs also makes it easy to keep track of.
These are among my favourites you've done. Though the firey RxHs are truley spectactular!! The only thing that strikes me about this is the almost blackmailesque tone of "somebody $top me or else..." Why not just post them for sale and then stripe the ones that don't sell? also... not to stir shit up, but it doesn't seem to me that you are using you're obvious painting skills to accentuate the sculpt as much as the other way around.
lol, I dont know if you realize this but you just stated exactly what I said when I first started and practice. ALL of my customs are named, most even to this day I name. AND I said the same thing about what figures I painted on, case in point ..... the devil man evil.
please dont pinstripe that kun. i agree with alex on this. personally i don't understand pinstriping these figures because I'm used to the classic paint applications done with the original artist's point of view in mind. i'm in the minority on the board it seems. i also agree akum3n ...the term kaiju industry really irked me as well. just my opinions of course, so i don't want all of you custom bandwagon people attacking me over it. it's obvious that you're a very talented painter, just different strokes for different folks i imagine.
seriously? welcome to the business. go paint a [expletive deleted], they'll sell even better. what? no one told you? a custom dead prez 20 inch du.nn.y would go for at least $650 a piece. get painting!
Nothing to do with love it or hate it. I think this is an incredably egotistic comment. I don't think your style has brought anything to Kaiju. I think you have brought your style to Kaiju. Sorry I didn't pick up on that little titbit of info earlier.
I just want to say that Kun is already a frankenberry tribute by nature. thats it... carry on with your "cu$toms"
i was going to say it before, but this thread seems like a "make me an offer" thread, just not in the BST. not allowed btw. or "make me an offer to not ruin these toys" thread.
