it’s very wild and mind blowing
I'll wildly guess Daiei/Gamera stuff or a Mecha Godzilla, given their recent (tremendous) metallic-looking runs.
Spoiler: Ultraman with King Joe scheme (!)
I was getting at this earlier! Production quality on their licensed guys is crazy, crazy good. Maybe this has been the case for everything, and I've just been missing out not collecting Maxtoy originals
Yeah, I do agree! I've been paying attention (albeit, with tunnel vision for a couple of characters) for a little bit, and I would say the variety/experimenting has gone up dramatically over the past half year. Super high quality, too.
Hey there! I figured I'd let people on here know about the upcoming Max Toy Company 15 year anniversary celebration that's coming up. Mark is selling "tickets" to the virtual zoom event with all of the artists involved for the Max Toy 15th Anniversary Celebration.
If you want to show support, the ticket purchase includes a "ticket" signed and numbered, Max Toy Anniversary stickers, a lenticular photo and the zoom link will be emailed. The ticket also allows early access for all the customs that are made for the show.
I figured I'd share this info if anyone wants to show their support to Mark (a super sweet guy!), his company, and would like early access to the customs for the show.
So I'm guessing this is the recent Mazinger Z reveal?
My thoughts: I feel like everyone is doing a Mazinger figure these days, and do we really need more? That said, I like PPP's execution on these two, which remind me of his old Cosmicat Robos. They are surprisingly small at only 6.5 inches tall, which seems to put them around the height of fight figures. I think the sculpt will look pretty clean and compact at that size.
Assumed the same, yep. At the initial announcement I was a little disappointed; you're right that we're seeing a glut of Mazinger and Mazinger-inspired toys. I originally I thought this would be huge and expensive, which would put it outside my sights as a casual fan at best. When I found out it was compact, priced well and with a removable Jet Scrander (which I think might be a first, at least for modern sofubi), I got on board.
I was similarly sort of on the fence about this but the fact that it's relatively small tipped me over into the "buy" column. (I've been headed away from the bigger toys for a bit now.) Not sure if I'll get any more, depends on the vinyl/paint combos, but glad I pulled the trigger on the OG Mazinger version.
I'm not sure if any of you watched/attended the Max Toy 15th Anniversary streaming thing—I found it really amusing that Mark mentioned showing his son the long-referenced prototype (assuming it's this Mazinger) and was met with something like "ah, cool I guess" and a shrug.
Different strokes for different generations, really. Max has his own vision and I like what he's painting already.Father may influence son, but I am excited for his son's own vision. I like both.
On the Max Toy Tsuburaya license front, it looks like a Bemstar and Twin Tail are on the way. Instagram video posted overnight, and all I could get was this lousy screenshot:
The TT looks tremendous, even though you don't see much from this image.
Nice! I wish they made more anime characters (damn you one day licenses). Been hunting down the azumanga daioh sets for what feels like an eternity.
cute video too!
Max Toy Twin Tail is in, and it is very, very handsome.
woahhh, I haven't seen this! Need to grab one of these, it's great!
@grosspustule I say go for it!
These lingered on the Japan Max Toy page for a week or so, and Bemstar did for a little longer. There's a couple still hanging around YJA, too, for dumb prices. I'm sure these will hit stateside sooner than later, and reissued often/affordably
I don't keep up on the max toy stuff too well, so I didn't even know this one existed. I def. gotta track one down!
First time seeing that Twin Tail and it's a stunner.
Really love the Twin Tail. Great sculpt.
Japan-side has quite a lineup planned for this year's WF. Six Gojiras (I think 4 are new sculpts?), 2 Hedorahs, a Mognetudon and a manga character (Dorohedoro) I'm not familiar with:
...and that '65 looks pretty damn good, too.
Ahhh, the Gyoza Fairy! Dorohedoro is the most absurd anime I’ve ever watched, highly recommend it if you’re okay with gore. It was originally a manga but I haven’t read it.
the manga is great fun,Secret Base also did a Gyosa Fairy sofubi... https://myfigurecollection.net/item/175493
That Anime Hedorah > Anraku's version
Sad news... I found today that the old Dream Rocket blog is gone, as it seems the hosting service closed. The blog went back to 2008 or so, and had a lot of info on the various show pieces and one-offs, which will now become almost impossible to track down.
It looks like it may have been somewhat crawled by the wayback machine:
That's the blog your referencing correct?
Yes it is! Thanks... may need to do some saving and filing tonight.
