    Ikea bookcase display help please!!!
Okay, so I have an Ikea Billy bookcase with glass doors that I use for display and I love it.

I've recently outgrown the case and wanted to buy another matching case with doors to move some of the stuff in to, but I found out that the doors, which I LOVE, have been discontinued, and replaced with doors that I don't like as much.

The doors I like were the Byom, and they looked like this in Medium-Brown, the color of the case:

The doors they've replaced them with are the Olsbo, which look like this:

So what I'm wondering is, since I can't seem to find the old doors at any of the local Ikeas, if I could buy these new ones, remove that center piece and have new glass cut to fit the whole length?

Or could I get doors like the ones I want made? Who do I contact about something like that, a cabinetmaker? Is that crazy expensive?

Has anyone had display stuff custom made on here?

you can have that center rail cut and have glass put in but it would probably cost you as much as you paid for that ikea cabinet. My theory is that they put that center rail in because the door flexes too much without it. Also, custom doors is another option but ordering one to size, matching stain and installing would also cost you way more than what you paid. Unless you're handy with cabinetry, it doesn't really pay to have something like this done.

Unfortunately, I agree with Lamour. I'm worried about the ability to match the crappy MDF coated color, no matter how close you get it still will be "off". Also the cost will not be worth it. At that rate, you could probably get someone to build you full custom cabinets that would be a whole lot nicer than the Billy/Door combo.

I think the best bet is to go with the replacements they put out and try to attach handles. (buy 6 now so you're covered) and get rid of the one off full glass shelf that you have. :(

I know you like the full one more, but I think the cost and work to replace it is probably not worth the difference of the divider on the new ones.

SUCKS. I hate Ikea (as stated in an earlier thread here today!)
